A Monumental Misrepresentation

In last week’s edition of To the Source, “Atheists Flood the Public Square” told the story of a new atheist monument recently erected outside a Starke, Florida courthouse. The American Atheists weren’t able to get the court to remove the Ten Commandments monument previously set up by a local Christian men’s group. So they adopted a new strategy, challenging it with one of their own ~

In a sidebar to the article, Benjamin Wiker discusses the various inscriptions on the chunk of granite. The front is inscribed with this quote from atheist activist Madalyn Murray O’Hair (1919-1955) ~

“An Atheist believes that a hospital should be built instead of a church.
An Atheist believes that a deed must be done instead of a prayer said.
An Atheist strives for involvement in life and does not escape into death.
He wants disease conquered, poverty vanished, war eliminated.”

Wiker ably refutes these statements, one-by-one;

The problem with this well-known quote is – to be blunt- that it displays to everyone (except, apparently the atheists that put the monument up) the total ignorance of O’Hair. Ignorance embedded in granite for all to see.

First Line:
“An Atheist believes that a hospital should be built instead of a church.”
Very profound – profoundly confused, that is. The truth is that if there had not been churches, there would never have been hospitals. There were some precursors to hospitals in ancient cultures, but they were rare. The pagans had a very different notion of how to care for the sick. When plagues broke out, as in the plague of Alexandria in 250 A.D., the pagans fled and left the dying to die alone. Christians on the other hand, followed Christ’s commands, and ran to the sick, rather than away from them – even the pagan sick.

It was after the Council of Nicaea in 325 A.D. that, under the direction of the newly-converted emperor Constantine, construction of hospitals in every cathedral town was begun. Again, this effort was undertaken because of Christ’s command to care for the poor, sick and dying. The later construction of Islamic hospitals was done in imitation of Christianity, and with the help of Christian physicians. Hospital building blossomed throughout the Middle Ages, and continues down to the present day. In America today, one in six patients are cared for in Catholic hospitals.

Second Line:
“An Atheist believes that a deed must be done instead of a prayer said.”
That may be true, but a Christian believes that a prayer should be said and a deed done. The two go together and always have. As Jesus made profoundly clear in Matt 25:31-46, the sheep will be separated from the goats, at the time of judgment, and only the sheep will enter the Kingdom of God. The sheep are the ones who fed the hungry and thirsty, welcomed strangers, clothed the naked, cared for the sick, and visited those in prison.

Third Line:
“An Atheist strives for involvement in life and does not escape into death.”
As the previous quote from Jesus should make obvious, Christians are commanded to involve themselves in this life, so that their “escape into death” (and ultimately from it) will have a happy result. And we note as well that it was Christianity that, against accepted pagan Roman practices, rejected suicide. Today, the leading proponents of “escape into death,” or more politely, euthanasia, are secular atheists (such as Derek Humphry and his Hemlock Society).

Fourth Line:
“He wants disease conquered, poverty vanished, war eliminated.”
So, the atheists are saying that Christians want to spread disease, poverty and war – the same Christians who invented hospitals, were commanded to care for the poor, and who have Christ’s command to love their enemies? Atheists are fond of thinking that Christians are the great war makers of history, citing the Wars of Religion of the 16th and 17th centuries. But as I point out in detail in my “Worshipping the State,” the number killed in religious wars is miniscule compared to the number killed in the great secular wars of the 19th and 20th centuries. And even smaller when compared to the number slaughtered by the great atheist regimes of the 20th century.

Wiker goes on to rebut the inscriptions on the other three sides of the monument, all of which are further attempts to validate non-belief, primarily by rewriting history. The atheists’ proclamations are rife with cherry-picked facts, straw men, false assumptions and general nonsense.

For example, the left side of the pillar includes a quote from the 1797 Treaty of Tripoli. It’s an obscure statement, written by a relatively unknown junior envoy, in a dusty old document – taken totally out of context. Its author, one Joel Barlow, actually included a footnote to his statement to prevent it from being misunderstood (or deliberately misrepresented by American Atheists in the 21st century!).
(Dave Miller Ph.D. has a very detailed explanation of the Treaty of Tripoli and atheists’ attempt to use it to undermine our Judeo-Christian foundations – HERE.)

Here’s a quote that should have been included on the monument:

“Our (Marxist) program necessarily includes the propaganda of atheism.”
~ Vladimir Lenin ~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It’s a good bet that the members of American Atheists have never seen Kirk Cameron’s 2012 film “Monumental,” which tells the story of America’s religious roots beautifully.
But then most non-believers are content with a distorted view of history, it’s consistent with their distorted worldview.
Iranian “Justice”
Having just imprisoned eight Christians for threatening ‘National Security,’ on Friday Iran decided to lecture Americans for “systematic discrimination against racial, religious, and ethnic minorities in the US society.” 😯
As I mentioned yesterday, Iran’s foreign ministry, apparently viewing the world through the same warped lens as the likes of Al Sharpton, Barack Obama and Beyonce, felt compelled to weigh in on the George Zimmerman trial; Iran’s Mullahs Demand Justice for Trayvon ~
Iranian officials said that Zimmerman’s trial for the murder of Trayvon Martin should have been conducted in a more “accurate and fair” manner.
“Several months on since a probe was launched [into the murder], the public opinion in the U.S. and across the world expect transparency, an accurate and fair judicial investigation into the case, with due regard to human rights principles for American citizens and a ban on discrimination against minorities in the country,” Araqchi (Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman) said.
This from the country that ranks number 8 on Open Doors World Watch List (based on severity of religious persecution).
Yes, in Iran, the very concept of “justice” is a bit ethereal. Especially if you happen to be a Christian convert in that country ~
July 19, 2013 ~ ISTANBUL (Morning Star News) – Eight Iranian Christians received heavy jail sentences on Tuesday (July 16) after being found guilty of “action against the national security” and “propaganda against the system” – charges typically leveled against Muslim converts to Christianity in Iran.
So, in a classic case of projection, Iran accuses the U.S. of “systematic discrimination,” when in fact they’ve elevated the practice to an art form. As World Watch Monitor reported in May; Iranian Christians face ‘systematic persecution and prosecution’ ~
Reports from the UK’s Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) and New York-based International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran (ICHRI) cite evidence of “systematic persecution and prosecution” of Protestants and Christian converts, as part of a widespread violation of international laws. […]
The UN’s Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran, Dr. Ahmed Shaheed, noted in September 2012 that more than 300 Christians have been arrested and detained since 2010, while at least 41 were detained for periods ranging from one month to over a year, sometimes without official charges.[…]
“Sometimes the phrase ‘systematic persecution’ is used so loosely that it sounds like a cliché. However, in the case of Iran’s persecution of Christians, it fits the criteria,” Mansour Borj, (advocacy officer for human rights initiative Article18) told World Watch Monitor.
“Arbitrary arrests and imprisonment, severe restrictions on worship services in Farsi language, a ban on the publication of Bibles and Christian literature in Farsi, threats and harassment of evangelical church leaders, and continued attempts to confiscate church properties – these are all pieces in the puzzle.
“In a nutshell, there is a systematic attempt to deprive churches of membership, literature, leadership training and development, communion with other Christians around the world, and the right to freedom of religion guaranteed by the international covenants that Iran is a signatory of.”
Don’t hold you breath waiting for Barack “Trayvon” Obama to call Iran out on the hypocrisy. Having totally eliminated the religious freedom section from their annual Country Reports on Human Rights, his State Department refuses to even acknowledge that abuses exist ~
Thus, the reports do not provide in-depth coverage of what has happened to Christians and other religious minorities in predominantly Muslim countries in the Middle East that saw the rise of revolutionary movements in 2011 in which Islamist forces played an instrumental role.
And relentless persecutions of “apostates” go totally ignored by the White House and their lackeys in the main stream media.
Saturday Shorts – 7-20-13
Random links of interest, concern or curiosity from the past week or so, that deserve at least a SHORT mention:
The election of a black president has meant nothing ~ by Dennis Prager. Yeah, so much for that whole post-racial thing. Billed as “tranformative,” instead Obama is polarizing the country with his divisive rhetoric. And, astoundingly, fomenting mob violence ~ ‘Let’s Go Mess Up Hollywood for Trayvon.’
Christians Flee Villages in Egypt’s North Sinai after Terrifying Murders ~ And the O’Ministration couldn’t care less. In fact, the U.S. ambassador is actually backing the bad guys(!) – Too bad the Christians aren’t named “Trayvon.”
And if you still have any doubts about which side of the good/evil divide the president is on, this story may help ~ Iran’s Mullahs Demand Justice for Trayvon. Sounds like Iranian Foreign Ministry and Obama us the same speech writers ~
“The acquittal of the murderer of the teenage African American once again clearly demonstrated the unwritten, but systematic racial discrimination against racial, religious, and ethnic minorities in the US society”[…]
“Zimmerman’s trial for the murder of Trayvon Martin should have been conducted in a more “accurate and fair” manner.”
Iran’s calls for justice came as a surprise to U.S. observers, who pointed out that the Iranian regime is notorious for beating opposition members, arresting journalists, stoning women to death, and publicly executing homosexual teenagers.
Did Bobby Kennedy Kill Marilyn Monroe? ~ “Stunning new evidence…” Hmmm … I recall a TV documentary years ago that hinted at the same thing. Unfortunately for the truth in this case, the Camelot image must be maintained. No justice for Marilyn.
“The beauty that we create is obviously taken from the beauty of nature. And the beauty of nature is a reflection of God; that’s his work,” he said.
“I don’t think there is a better way to draw hearts to God, to Christ. That’s where all the beautiful churches and artwork, all those things we hold in such high regard…that was inspired by the beauty of nature to return to the beauty of God.”
Detroit – Purely Broke
Well, it’s a sad day for the city I was born in…
It seems like only yesterday that President Obama and Jimmy Hoffa Jr. were in town to – er, ah, um… pretend that things were turning around.
And just last February, it was halftime in America… and Detroit was making a comeback.
And now, sadly, the city’s bankrupt.
But – no point in crying 🙁 …
Especially when this video from Steven Crowder is so hysterical 😀 ~
Sorry Detroit – I couldn’t help myself.
Latest Dispatch from the War on Christendom
Conservative Christians just lost another skirmish in the fight to save the culture/country. This time the battleground was an Austin,Texas branch of the YMCA. In a July 12th Townhall post, David Limbaugh reported on the most recent offensive by the pro-abortion crowd ~Culture War Has Escalated From Cold to White-Hot ~
… pro-abortion groups could not let stand an arrangement between the SFLA (Students for Life of America) and the associate branch director of the Town Lake branch of the YMCA of Austin for the SFLA’s use of the Y’s showers for the week of the “Students #Stand4Life Bus Tour.”
That’s right; certain members of the club complained that it would be “too political” to allow pro-lifers in the showers, so they pressured management to exclude the group. Too political? What?
Note that it wasn’t that the pro-lifers were carrying placards into the showers or proselytizing recalcitrant pro-aborts while toweling off. It was the mere presence of pro-lifers, even if they were minding their own business, that the pro-abort bullies found intolerable.
And the YMCA – that would be the Young Men’s Christian Association, an organization founded in London on June 6th, 1844, whose original mission was:
to put Christian principles into practice by developing a healthy “body, mind and spirit” – that YMCA, caved.
Limbaugh continued ~
Conservatives and Christians are no longer engaged in a cold war with secular leftists. This war is white-hot, and we’re losing because we’re in denial, naive, willfully and blissfully ignorant, cowardly, or confusing the Scripture that tells us to rejoice in our persecution as an admonition to abstain from politics.
One by one, individuals and groups (Boy Scouts, the Y, retailers threatened with boycotts) are abandoning their principles rather than face the wrath of the totalitarian left.
People often ask me, “Yes, but what can we do?” Well, you can start by recognizing the reality and speaking out against it — even if you will subject yourself to ridicule as a result. That’s an essential first step, and we can proceed from there.
Battle lines have been clearly drawn.
The only remaining questions are ~
Which side are you on?
And when are you going to engage?
“No half-heartedness and no worldly fear must turn
us aside from following the light unflinchingly.”
It’s only “paranoia” if they’re not out to get you
“Tin foil hat” has become contemporary code to describe anyone who imagines a
conspiracy – or possibly aliens – behind any occurrence that’s the least bit
difficult to explain. In “Signs,” the 2002 sci-fi thriller, Mel Gibson’s children
believed the caps would prevent aliens from reading their minds.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Russians are coming! The Russians are coming!

“Obama’s DHS Requests 15,000 Russian Troops”

This rumor was floating around the web a couple weeks ago and because the sources weren’t just the usual conspiracy-around-every-corner sites, Robert Stacy McCain at The Other McCain blog decided to dig a little deeper; FEMA’s Russia ‘Protocols’ Raise Serious Questions*. Turns out there definitely, may or may not be, either something very suspicious – or not….

In other words, it’s yet another one of those stories we keep hearing about that initially sound totally implausible (because after all this is still America isn’t it?) but- given the Orwellian nature of Washington D.C. these days – turn out to be mostly true.

Stories like, oh… the IRS targeting conservatives, the feds allowing weapons into Mexico that end up being used to murder Americans, Obama & Co. doing nothing when our Libyan ambassador was being attacked, DOJ promoting INjustice, the NSA spying on Americans…

The truth is; the Obama administration, and the Left in general, are so ruthlessly focused on advancing their progressive agenda – transforming America into a place that most of us would no longer recognize – that any means to an end is acceptable, even bold-faced lies. Or maybe, especially bold-faced lies.

It’s extremely unsettling to have paranoid feelings about your own government. But that, I’m starting to believe, is exactly where they want us.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
By the way, in “Signs” there really were aliens.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

*There are just enough scattered facts to make the Russian story plausible. Throw Janet Napolitano’s sudden departure from NHS (kinda like a rat jumping ship?) into the mix, and it suddenly becomes even more credible.

Please! Stop the all-Zimmerman all-the-time coverage!

Zzzzzzzzzzzimmerman!

When will that buzzing in my ears end????

I don’t know about you – but I can’t take it anymore! The network news drones are so Zimmerman-obessed you’d think there was nothing else worth reporting on in the entire world.

Rather than assisting the O’Ministration in fomenting racial discord, wouldn’t it be refreshing to see the media (all the media – not just the main stream lackies) cover ANYTHING else? Particularly matters of national import? Issues that are infinitely more significant? Maybe, for instance:

Benghazi ~ Still no accountability for four dead Americans. Lots of questions about the administration’s involvement – or lack thereof.

Fast & Furious ~ Still no justice for Brian Terry, a Mexican beauty queen or the latest victim.

IRS targeting of conservatives ~ and the disturbing implications for free speech, the civil society and our Republic itself.

Fort Hood Massacre ~ Major Hassan’s trial has finally begun almost 4 years after he mowed down 13 Americans in cold blood. You’d think we could have just a little coverage on this one wouldn’t you?!

The Gosnell Trial ~ If you didn’t hear about this story online you probably didn’t hear about it.

Camp Bastion Attack ~ When Bush was in office we were subjected to a daily body count from Iraq and Afghanistan. But now, if you aren’t paying attention – or haven’t lost a friend or family member – you’d almost believe there haven’t been any military deaths since Obama took office.

NSA spying ~ You’d think the media would be a bit more vigilant about threats to the first amendment…

Egypt ~ Muslim Brotherhood vs. the rest of the country

Obamacare – and its perverse effects on the country’s economic health

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Stories like these receive scant attention from the main stream media. At best they’ll get a brief mention – before being dismissed as irrelevant.
And yet every network, cable and radio news network has devoted endless resources over the last couple of weeks to covering the Trayvon Martin/ George Zimmerman tale. It’s almost becoming surreal. Every low-information voter in the country has a strong opinion on the case one way or the other (and thinks they’re entitled to share it with you).
But if Obama and his pack of progressive community agitators hadn’t dragged this story into the national spotlight, it would have remained a local – albeit tragic – one. If they were sincerely concerned with senseless gun deaths, then Chicago’s body count would certainly be worth minimal coverage. Black-on-black crime in that city has produced headlines like this, just last week; Summer Surge in Gun Violence Forces Chicago Hospital to Hold Blood Drive.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

What’s really distressing though is how sheep-like we’ve truly become. It’s as if most Americans wouldn’t know what to say, to do, or to feel about anything, if we didn’t first receive our programming from the MSM.

Saturday Shorts – 7-13-13

Random links of interest, concern or curiosity from the past week or so, that deserve at least a SHORT mention:

The Global Muslim Brotherhood Daily Watch ~ A good go-to site for the latest on the Brotherhood, in Egypt, in the White House, and around the world.

Airman Punished for Objecting to Gay Marriage in Military Chapel ~ It’s head-spinning the way the military is being so rapidly transformed into an anti-Christian organization.

America’s sociopath fetish ~ Michelle Malkin describes the sick trend among some of today’s morally-ambiguous who are attracted to the morally-depraved.

Lesson learned: You can indoctrinate generations of American women in the ways of gender empowerment, but you can’t make a goodly portion of them think straight. Hormones trump basic human decency and good judgment in the crowded coven of sociopaths.

Democratic aide brings gun into courthouse, receives ticket ~ Oddly enough, Representative John Conyers, the Democrat in question, is a staunch advocate of stricter gun control laws whose votes have earned him an “F” grade from the National Rifle Association.
And the aide, Betty Petrenz (Conyers’ office manager), received no sentence or formal punishment. Just a ticket, which will be stricken from her record if she demonstrates good behavior.
Ah yes. The old leftie double-standard.

[Hat-tip: Bobo]

Flush with Federal Cash, Obamacare Supporters Spending Money on…Porta-Potties ~ Is nothing sacred? 😯 You can’t even use the hopper without being indoctrinated! Think of your tax dollars while you’re flushing.

Race Hustlers and Double Standards ~ Very worthwhile read by Mark Alexander at the Patriot Post. Obama & friends sowing the seeds of racial discord – to harvest an endless crop of mind-numbed multi-culti progressives.

And speaking of the Zimmerman trial 3-Ring Circus ~ Check out Why the Prosecutors Should Be Disbarred and Zimmerman Judge Ran Kangaroo Court. What a travesty.

Evolution? Where’s the evidence…?

For anyone who thinks evolution has been unquestionably proven as scientific fact for decades, and/or for anyone who hasn’t paid much attention to the topic since high school biology class, Ray Comfort (Living Waters Ministry) has just released a short film that may very well shift your entire paradigm ~

‘Evolution vs. God’ Movie So Popular It Crashes Evangelical Leader’s Website: ‘It’s Going to Take Down Evolution’.

Comfort said that Christians are often mocked by atheists for being weak-minded and for not having evidence that God exists, yet the faith leader said that “Evolution vs. God” shows that the “bogus science of evolution has no evidence and rests on nothing but blind faith.”

Here’s the trailer ~

You can download the movie HERE. (It’ll be available on DVD after August 7th.)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’m not sure why a large number of atheist scientists still cling so tenaciously to the theory of evolution, although it does seem to enable them to exude a particular ambiance of smug superiority. All the actual evidence points toward intelligent design – yet they refuse to see.
Faced with facts – rather than chuck the whole idea of evolution – they continue to revise it, positing ever more far-fetched sub-theories: the mutiverse theory (there’s not just one universe – there are multiple ones) the cosmological inflation theory, the no-boundary proposal, and the ever-poplular evolution-needs-a-lot-more-time-to-happen-so-let’s-just-keep-adding-bazillions-of-years-onto-the-age-of-the-earth principle.
And the latest: the holographic principle. Fascinating. The world we see around us is nothing but a holographic projection of information from the edge of reality.
[Including Barack Obama? Cool. 😀 ]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This may be all you need to know about the way some evolutionary biologists think;

“What really matters is the name you succeed in imposing on the facts
– not the facts themselves.”

Franklin’s 13 Timeless Principles

In the year 1723, a seventeen year-old boy arrived in Philadelphia without a penny to his name. At age 42, he retired, wealthy. Few men, before or since have ever been as successful as Benjamin Franklin.

He gave credit for his many inventions and business successes to this list of 13 principles. Each of them should be practiced in order, for a week at a time, so that all of them become a habit in your life. They’ll work as well today as they did then.

1. Temperance: Eat not to dullness; drink not to elevation.
2. Silence: Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself, avoid trifling conversation.
3. Order: Let all your things have their places; let each part of your business have its time.
4. Resolution: Resolve to perform what you ought; perform without fail what you resolve.
5. Frugality: Make no expense but to do good to others or yourself; waste nothing.
6. Industry: Lose no time; be always employed in something useful; cut off all unnecessary actions.
7. Sincerity: Use no harmful deceit; think innocently and justly; and if you speak, speak accordingly.
8. Justice: wrong none by doing injuries or omitting the benefits that are your duty.
9. Moderation: Avoid extremes; forebear resenting injuries so much as you think they deserve.
10. Cleanliness: Tolerate no uncleanness in body, clothes or habitation.
11. Tranquility: Be not disturbed at trifles, nor at accidents.
12. Chastity: Be chaste in matters with the opposite sex.
13. Humility: Imitate Jesus and Socrates.

Be at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors,
and let every new year find you a better man.

~ Benjamin Franklin ~
