Unions Kick it up a Notch

Michelle Malkin reported yesterday in Big Labor Watch: “Open season” on Verizon, about the escalting union “negotiations” in the Verizon strike:

Union thugs are up to their old tricks — sabotage, deceit, intimidation, feces-hurling 😯 , you name it — as a labor dispute between the Communications Workers of America and Verizon festers.

…the desperation is clear from a message left on a phone hotline set up for members of a union chapter in Brooklyn. The voice of a representative encourages members to deal harshly with “managers and scabs” ~

“It is open season. Follow them safely, but when you get to a location, torture them, torture them with chants and noise. Be so loud that they can’t concentrate and wish they never got out of bed,” says the recorded voice.

I guess we shouldn’t be too shocked when this happens then:

From MRCtv: John King was shot in the arm last week when he surprised a man trying to slash the tires on the truck at his Lambertville, MI home.The word “scab” was also scrawled on the side. King says he became suspicious when he saw an outside security light outside go on. When he stepped out of his front door, the man fired one shot and ran off.

King is the owner of the largest non-union electrical contracting company the Toledo, Ohio area. And it’s far from the first time the union has attempted to “negotiate” with him as RedState reports.

Well, so much for that whole “civility” thing.

A general dissolution of principles and manners will more surely overthrow
the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy.
While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once
they lose their virtue then will be ready to surrender their liberties to
the first external or internal invader.”

Paul Ponders Alien Invasion

Sadly, when one bankrupt liberal scheme after another fails to fix the economy – this is where progressives wind up:

Paul Krugman (New York Times) speaking with Harvard economics professor Kenneth Rogoff on Sunday:

If we discovered that, you know, space aliens were planning to attack and we needed a massive buildup to counter the space alien threat and really inflation and budget deficits took secondary place to that, this slump would be over in 18 months. And then if we discovered, oops, we made a mistake, there aren’t any aliens, we’d be better – 😯

ROGOFF: And we need Orson Welles, is what you’re saying.

KRUGMAN: No, there was a “Twilight Zone” episode like this in which scientists fake an alien threat in order to achieve world peace. Well, this time, we don’t need it, we need it in order to get some fiscal stimulus.

As Noel Sheppard at NewsBusters so aptly puts it:

Makes you wonder if space aliens have already arrived and they’re residing inside this liberal Nobel laureate’s head.

Newsweek – the Jester of Journalism

In what’s destined to become another milepost on the path to extinction for traditional journalism, last week Newsweek decided to feature Michelle Bachmann on their cover looking slightly crazed and labeled as the “Queen of Rage”. Gee, how do they really feel? Perhaps if the magazine hadn’t abandoned objectivity years ago they might not be on the road to ruin.

Hitting back, Sultan Knish offers up some suggestions for future cover stories including this one, which I predict Newsweek will publish a week or two ahead of the 2012 election:

Flashback: Andrew Klavan’s great video on the msm obsession with bringing down Bachmann.

Are you EMP-Aware?

Well I wasn’t. And now that I am I’m not sure I want to be.

~~~~~~~
Imagine if suddenly…
the internet was down and
the cable was out and
all phone communication was impossible and
medical services were unavailable and
all transportation was shut down and
the entire electrical grid was off …
All at the same time.
Across the entire United States.
For weeks…or months…
~~~~~~~

While the devastation caused by a nuclear weapon hit on a large U.S. metropolitan area would be horrific, the impact of an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) would be worse. Because, although the aftermath of a direct nuclear attack would be almost unimaginable, it would be localized. Think Hiroshima and Nagasaki. As awful as the loss of life and destruction was, the rest of Japan survived and eventually recovered. An EMP attack could immediately blast America back to the 19th century – or earlier. For a long time.

An EMP is what occurs when a nuclear warhead is detonated above the earth’s atmosphere -causing sort of an electromagnetic energy tsunami which pretty much takes out the entire electrical system.

As the Heritage Foundation explains in “The Devastating Threat to Our Security”, there are three ways an EMP would damage the electrical infrastructure:

First, the electromagnetic shock can disrupt electrical devices. The second effect is similar to lightning—a power surge that would burn circuits and immobilize electronic components and systems. The third is a pulse effect that flows through electricity transmission lines, damaging distribution centers and fusing power lines. Any of these can cause irreversible damage to an electronic system.

And then…

Communications would collapse, transportation would halt, and electrical power would simply be nonexistent. Not even a global humanitarian effort would be enough to keep hundreds of millions of Americans from death by starvation, exposure, or lack of medicine.

Nor would the catastrophe stop at U.S. borders. Most of Canada would be devastated, too, as its infrastructure is integrated with the U.S. power grid. Without the American economic engine, the world economy would quickly collapse. Much of the world’s intellectual brain power (half of it is in the United States) would be lost as well. Earth would most likely recede into the “new” Dark Ages.

But don’t worry. I’m sure our highly responsible federal government is fulfilling their basic constitutional role of providing for the common defense by making sure we have an effective missile stem in place to neutralize an incoming attack … or not.

Well… NOT.

Which is why Heritage is calling for August 15th to be recognized as National EMP Awareness Day. While the U.S. apparently has some capability to intercept incoming missiles, we definitely need to develop a comprehensive plan. Along with funding for more research on the EMP threat to ensure that the country fully understands the scope of the danger and can prepare cost-effective countermeasures.

In addition, because a huge solar flare could have effects similar to an EMP, Heritage recommends developing a National Recovery Plan and a plan to respond to severe space weather emergencies.

There have been six national commissions and major independent U.S. government studies which concur on the significance of the danger represented by an EMP – and yet Congress just dithers as usual.

It’s time to –

make August 15 National EMP Awareness Day to wake up America’s leaders to the looming threat. An EMP strike should be recognized as a clear and present danger—one that could be devastating if it finds the nation ill-prepared.

The Heritage Foundation is hosting a panel event on the EMP threat today (8-15-11) from 11:00 to 12:30 am. Click HERE for details.

“The price of freedom is eternal vigilance. “ ~ Thomas Jefferson ~

~~~~~~~~
If you still don’t feel “aware” enough watch 33 Minutes. It’s actually 59 minutes long, an eye-opening documentary about the nuclear threat (including EMPs) from rogue nations.
Navajo Code Talkers Day
In 1982 President Reagan designated August 14th as National Navajo Code Talkers Day. The World War II story of these men and their military service is a fascinating one:
It is a great American story that is still largely unknown—the story of a group of young Navajo men who answered the call of duty, who performed a service no one else could, and in the process became great warriors and patriots. Their unbreakable code saved thousands of lives and helped end WWII.
More than 400 Navajo men served with the U.S. Marines in the Pacific theater sending radio messages between command posts and front lines. The code they helped develop, based on the Navajo language, was never broken by the Japanese. The code talkers returned home sworn to secrecy until 1968, when the government declassified the code 23 years after the war ended.
This past Wednesday, DNVA (Department of Navajo Veterans Affairs) President Ben Shelly issued a proclamation naming Aug. 14-19 as Navajo Nation Code Talker’s Week:
“In honor of National Navajo Code Talkers Day, I ask all Americans to join us in commemorating our Navajo Code Talkers, by taking a moment to pray for our war heroes and the brave military men and women who protect all our people, our freedom and our land today,”
Hope ~ and REAL Change
Detroit lost a true treasure this past week when Eleanor Josaitis passed away at age 79. Along with Father Wm. Cunningham, Josaitis co-founded the non-profit organization Focus: HOPE in 1968. For the two of them “hope” and “change” weren’t just empty platitudes – or campaign buzzwords.
Local radio host and author Mitch Albom stated in an on-air commentary/eulogy that Josaitis had worked for “social justice”. Not true. Certainly not in the way the term is typically used.
“Social justice”, a rallying cry for progressives, implies a demand for equal outcome for all. All along Focus: HOPE’s mission has been to pursue equal opportunity for all. Moved by the tragedy of Detroit’s 1967 race riots, and propelled by her Christian faith, Josaitis sought effective means to help the disadvantaged help themselves.
As the Detroit News described her:
She was the embodiment of the truism, “Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.”
I had the opportunity to meet both Mrs. Josaitis and Fr. Cunningham several years ago in my capacity as an insurance underwriter and was extremely impressed with the facilities – and the two of them! Their enthusiasm for the organization and its mission was contagious. And they certainly had a lot to be proud of.
For over four decades now Focus: HOPE has been feeding the most vulnerable of the hungry (young children & their mothers and senior citizens) in Detroit, providing successful career training programs and working to bring the community together for positive change. Recently they started a program to support academic achievement among local children.
The News’ article describes what Josaitis meant to Focus: HOPE and the city of Detroit:
When the charismatic Cunningham died in 1997, there was concern that Focus: HOPE would wither without his dominant personality at the helm.
But the diminutive Josaitis proved to be just as passionate an advocate for the cause of erasing poverty and racism, and just as effective in raising resources for the organization. She embedded herself in Metro Detroit’s business community and built a strong constituency for her mission.
She sought more than donations. Her rallying cry was “Get involved!” and she urged Metro Detroiters to take responsibility for their own neighbors and neighborhoods…
…Eleanor Josaitis lived a life of impact and service, rooted in her Christian faith and love of her fellow man. And she leaves Detroit better than when she found it.
For the last 43 years Focus: HOPE has embodied true change for so many Detroiters. Farewell Eleanor Josaitis. May your legacy live on and continue to bring HOPE to the city for years to come.
~~~~~~~~~~
You can support the ongoing efforts of Focus: HOPE by participating in their annual walk on October 9th.

Saturday Shorts 8-13-11

Random links of interest, concern or curiosity from the past week or so, that deserve at least a SHORT mention:

This Debacle Needs Some “Fast & Furious” Attention

Has America ever had a more angry, arrogant bunch of adolescents populating the executive branch of our government? No. Once they’ve finally vacated the premises will we ever be able to repair the damage they’ve done and set the country right again? Let’s pray so.

One issue that must be addressed sooner rather than later is the Operation Fast & Furious fiasco – still percolating in the background amidst the financial commotion.

At Pajamas Media, Bob Owens explains the truth about this disaster:

… no competent federal law enforcement officer would ever have concocted an operation as obviously doomed to catastrophic failure as Operation Fast and Furious:

– Federal law enforcement agents don’t let guns “walk.”
– Federal law enforcement agents knew that this operation would not lead to cartel kingpins.
– Federal law enforcement agents knew from the outset that they could never arrest their targets, who were outside of their jurisdiction.
– Middle managers in government would never dare to try such a dangerous, high-risk operation without express orders from above.

Beyond the ATF, the DEA has admitted involvement as well, which Owens details further. How widespread (DEA, ATF, DOJ, DHS…?) and how high up this thing went, only time will tell. Right now there’s a whole lot of obfuscation going on – directly aimed at deflecting blame.

What was initially presumed to be merely a case of total incompetence, may in fact be something much more sinister. As Owens sums up:

The most logical explanation for Fast and Furious and related operations was that it was not a law enforcement operation, but a political operation designed to advance an anti-gun political agenda that Attorney General Eric Holder and President Barack Obama have been pursuing since the beginning of this presidency.

This explosive scandal at the heart of Gunwalker isn’t a matter of “what did he know and when did he know it?” It now instead seems to be a matter of who will come forward, and how much evidence will they provide to implicate officials at the highest levels of a lawless government.

Will justice ever be done? For America?
How about justice for Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry…

Tragically, probably not. Terry’s family was just denied crime victim status (which would have enabled them to talk with prosecutors and speak at sentencing) in the case against Jamie Avila, the “straw purchaser” of the gun used in Terry’s murder. Human Events has more on the story and why the request is being denied:

U.S. Attorney Dennis Burke argues because the family was not “directly or proximately harmed” by the illegal purchase of the murder weapon, it does not meet the definition of “crime victim” in the Avila case. Burke claims the victim of the Avila’s gun purchases, “is not any particular person, but society in general.”

Why would U.S. Attorney Burke issue this unusual decision? Take a wild guess:

Coffey and others wonder if Burke has a conflict. It was his office that led Operation Fast and Furious. The operation, while executed by agents for the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, was managed by Assistant U.S. Attorney Emory Hurley. Hurley drafted the response to the family’s motion. It was signed by Burke.

This whole operation stinks to high heaven. It represents immature, irresponsible behavior – bordering on the unconscionable (even criminal?). We need to get to the bottom of this mess – NOW.
And we desperately need to get trustworthy, accountable adults back in charge of this country!

“One Nation Under Arrest?”

“Wherever the real power in a Government lies,
there is the danger of oppression.”
~ James Madison ~

~~~~~~~~~~~
The great lemonade stand crack-down by law enforcement appears to be just the tip of an out-of-control tyrannical government iceberg. Check out this recent video from Heritage Foundation ~
What happened to this Florida businessman is downright Kafkaesque!
See also: Heritage’s Overcriminalized.com ~
Criminal law is supposed to be used to redress only that conduct which society thinks deserving of the greatest punishment and moral sanction…
But as a result of rampant overcriminalization, trivial conduct is now often punished as a crime. Many criminal laws make it possible for the government to convict a person even if he acted without criminal intent.
Sounds like more and more our own government is guilty of criminal intent!
“A society in full decomposition…”
Why is London on fire?
Theodore Dalrymple, a doctor, diagnoses the root causes in this opinion piece in The Australian: British rioters the spawn of a bankrupt ruling elite.
British youth leads the Western world in almost all aspects of social pathology, from teenage pregnancy to drug taking, from drunkenness to violent criminality. There is no form of bad behaviour that our version of the welfare state has not sought out and subsidised…
…They are therefore radically unsocialised and deeply egotistical, viewing relations with other human beings in the same way as Lenin: Who whom, who does what to whom. By the time they grow up, they are destined not only for unemployment but unemployability.
Dalrymple doesn’t mention faith or religion anywhere in the article. But where else do values like personal responsibility, a good work ethic, manners, respect for the law – and your fellow human beings (!) come from? Atheism?
When a culture replaces God with Government you get the London riots.
~~~~~~~~~~

Related: It’s not just London ~ at The Blaze: From London to the Rest of the World: Where is Violent Unrest Spreading Across the Globe?

~~~~~~~~~~
Updated [8-11-11]: Melanie Phillips (author of “The World Turned Upside Down”) has a great article on the riots at the UK Mail: Britain’s liberal intelligentsia has smashed virtually every social value. Basically in agreement with Dalrymple, Phillips hits harder on the amorality of modern society – and does recommend a faith-based cure:
Repairing this terrible damage also means, dare I say it, a return to the energetic transmission of Biblical morality…
…When church leaders stop prattling like soft-headed social workers and start preaching, once again, the moral concepts that underlie our civilisation, and when our political leaders decide to oppose the culture war that has been waged against that civilisation rather than supinely acquiescing in its destruction, then — and only then — will we start to get to grips with this terrible problem.
Until then, within the smouldering embers of our smashed and burned-out cities, we can only look upon the ruins of the Britain we have so dearly loved; the Britain that once led the world towards civilisation, but is now so tragically leading the way out.
Time for a new narrative?
How’s the “Tea Party as Terrorists” strategy working for the main stream media propaganda machine?
Well, the bad news is that 29% of our fellow Americans are either hard-core Leftists or simply detached from reality (Is that redundant?). They apparently see the Tea Party as akin to Muslim terrorist organizations. 🙄
But the good news is that the majority aren’t falling for the fabrication. Hot Air analyzes the numbers further.
The fact that they can even get 29% to agree that pursuing policy changes through representative government is akin to “terrorism” is depressing, but it has a silver lining. It looks like Democrats and self-professed liberals are marginalizing themselves fast in this media meme du jour.
This video from MRC TV seems to bear that out…
Looks like the further the Left drifts from reality, the better for the Right.
Military Under Attack on all Fronts
The war on the U.S. military continues unabated – and the assaults are coming not just from our declared enemies. Many are really guerrilla attacks from within.
First off, we have cuts in defense spending –
The wonderful new debt ceiling legislation will probably end up gutting the military. As The Foundry reported Monday:
There should be no doubt in the minds of anyone in Congress or the public at large that the policy established by the debt ceiling law will strip the military of its ability to secure the vital interests of the United States. The law, unless it is altered or repealed, will do irreparable harm to the United States military.
Next, there’s this cheery news:
The Air Force has banned a class on the Christian-based “Just War Theory” because the class used verses from the Bible.
“Just War Theory” has been a part of Western civilization since the days of St. Augustine in the 5th century A.D. It uses the abiding standards of the word of God to help members of the military determine when the use of lethal force against an enemy of this country is morally legitimate and helps them to know how to use that force in a morally just way.
The class has been taught for more than two decades at Vandenberg Air Force base, and has been an important source of perspective for those who have their fingers on the missile launchers that protect our liberties.
But because of noisy complaints from secular fundamentalists the class has now been shelved, and our military has been robbed of the moral guidance of the Scriptures.
Rather than fight for religious liberty, the Air Force meekly suspended the entire class the day the complaint was filed.
[You can contact Congress on this issue via the AFA (American Family Association) HERE.]
Am I detecting an anti-Christian agenda here? Army approves atheism-themed concert at Fort Bragg.
(Whatever happened to “there aren’t any atheists in foxholes”?)
Although we do seem to make exceptions for jihadists:
It’s been almost two years (11-09) and the case against Muslim Army Major Hasan has still not been prosecuted! But never fear – our government has managed to do this: Fort Hood shooting first responders laid off due to budget cuts.
And there was this dude just a couple weeks ago: AWOL Soldier Arrested in What Police Say Was New Fort Hood Terror Plot ~ Pfc. Naser Jason Abdo 21, was found with weapons, explosives and jihadist materials at the time of his arrest.
Apparently we learned absolutely nothing from Hasan’s murderous rampage…
Then of course there’s the disastrous repeal of DADT – jammed through Congress with little or no regard for the impact on our troops:
How Congress Was Duped into Repealing Military Gay Ban
The DADT Repeal Whitewash
The Military is NOT Ready for the DADT Repeal: No matter what the spin. They Cannot Address the Questions from the Front line Leaders or front line members!
How exactly is any of this in line with the Fed’s responsibility to provide for the common defense? Sorry guys – no God, no funding, just be happy, be gay and hug the terrorist in the bunk next to yours. And be prepared to risk your lives for um… “political correctness” – on a shoestring budget.
What a travesty.
