Pension Palooza

In this happy season of giving aren’t you comforted to know that your taxpayer dollars are being used to ensure a lavish retirement lifestyle for public sector employees? I certainly am. Especially when our personal retirement accounts, the ones we diligently spent years squirreling away, are evaporating right before our very eyes.

Not only will many of us never be able to retire completely – we’ll be forced to support our public “servants” for the rest of their lives, in the manner to which they’ve become accustomed.

If you really want to get depressed, visit Taxpayers United of America (TUA). They’ve got all the jaw-dropping numbers. Recently, through the Freedom of Information Act, TUA obtained the gold-plated pension figures for officials in Wayne County, Michigan, along with those for state police, judges and teachers.

How does an annual retirement income of $159,000 sound? With a lifetime payout of $5,741,181? That’s what retired Wayne County health director, Dr. Michele Harris, is set to rake in. And this is in a community with an average annual wage of $55,000 and official unemployment of just under 14%. The county’s annual payout, just for the top 100 pensioners, is around $5.2 million.

The winner in Michigan’s pension-palooza is retiree Albert Lorenzo, former educator, who pulls in $174,617 annually; $6,003,321 total. State judges and police are way down the ladder, their highest annual pensions are under $100,000.

So why are we always hearing the whining about low paid educators? Don’t get me wrong, I personally know many great public school teachers, totally committed to their students. But I agree with Christina Tobin, vice president of TUA who bluntly says that these public pension obligations are simply unsustainable.

At least this issue is starting to get some attention on the national level. Reuters reported last week that ~

Republicans in Congress on Thursday sought to shift attention back to public pension shortfalls, with estimates of the total deficit ranging from $600 billion up to $3 trillion.

Leaders on a joint congressional committee on the economy are releasing a series of reports on states’ struggles to cover the costs of pensions for future retirees.

“States are already $3 trillion in the red, a crisis four times larger than the Wall Street bailout,” said Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina, who released the report with Kevin Brady, a Representative from Texas.

DeMint hinted legislation on pensions may be coming soon.

“The deeper we get into this research, the clearer it becomes that federal legislation may be necessary to force states to use honest accounting, fix their pension debt and protect taxpayers from the mother of all bailouts,” he said.

If Senator DeMint is supporting something, you can bet he’s on the Right side of the debate. His website currently features some charts illustrating the looming pension crisis, including the predicted “Day of Reckoning” for each state.

Something’s gotta give folks. The “makers” in this country take all the risks, and in this depressed economy we’re gradually going broke. But the “takers” get a guaranteed life on easy street. Why is the private sector forced to insure a risk-free existence to their “employees?!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ah well, it’s Christmas, and income taxes… they’re just the gifts that keeps on giving – to government employees. Forever…
Reining in the Economy Killers
While the administration makes a phony show of caring about the economy, peddling non-solutions like Obama’s Jobs Bill, behind the curtain the real job creators in America are being thwarted by punitive, runaway regulations – courtesy of the executive branch.
It’s high time to rein in the massive unaccountable federal bureaucracy. The REINS Act (H.R. 10 / S. 299), introduced by Rep. Geoff Davis (R-KY), is aimed at doing just that.
The REINS Act (Regulations from the Executive In Need of Scrutiny) was passed by the House on Wednesday and now moves on to the Senate where it’s supported by Jim DeMint (my hero) and Rand Paul.
Michigan’s Democrat senators are no doubt as duplicitous as the rest of their party, but at least they’ll be hearing from me on this critical issue ~
Dear Senators Levin & Stabenow:
It appears that the private sector is (deliberately?) being swamped by massive job-killing regulation. In the past year alone, thousands of new restrictive regulations, pushed mainly by special interest groups, have been issued by 60 different federal agencies. The Small Business Administration estimates that these will cost the private sector 1.7 trillion annually – that’s $10,000 per household!
The U.S. economy is in dire straits, yet unelected bureaucrats, many of whom are overly-influenced by special interest groups, have been given sweeping authority to effectively punish the private sector. And why has Congress abdicated their constitutional legislative responsibility in this matter? How is it that a bunch of anonymous “ruler-makers” are suddenly unaccountable to the American people?
How can the federal government be remotely serious about improving the economy when job creators are buried under mountains of costly regulations imposed on them by a bunch of faceless bureaucrats?
If you would sincerely like to demonstrate to your constituents that you’re committed to job growth, you can start by helping to pass the REINS Act (H.R. 10 / S. 299).
Thank-you for your support of this critical issue,
Designs on the Truth
Who REINS in Washington Anyway? @ the Foundry:
Congress rarely considers a bill that would change the way Washington works. But this is exactly what the Regulations from the Executive In Need of Scrutiny (REINS) Act would do. The REINS Act (H.R.10) would require Congress to approve all “major” regulations—those costing $100 million or more annually—before they take effect. On December 7, it passed the House of Representatives by an impressive vote of 241–184. It is now headed for consideration in the Senate.
Brothers Now Rule the Egyptian Hood
As feared, by those who could read the writing on the prayer rugs, the Islamification of Egypt is now well underway. In the first round of last week’s parliamentary elections, the “Freedom and Justice Party” (could they have come up with a more cruelly ironic moniker?), affiliated with the once-banned Muslim Brotherhood, won 40 percent of the vote overall.
And, as Compass Direct reports,
The Al Nour Party, made up of members of the extremist Salafi group, garnered 20 percent of the vote. By comparison, the relatively liberal Egypt Social Democratic Party received 15 percent of the total vote.
Very bad news for non-Muslim types who were hoping for freedom of religion…
The election results confirmed the fears of Egyptian Christians (Copts), many of whom believe that Islamists will take control of the country in the wake of the revolution that deposed former President Hosni Mubarak. Egyptians now wait for the run-offs and final two rounds of this election, another election to seat the second half of Egypt’s bicameral chamber, and then finally the election for the next president. Further wins by Islamists, Christians said, will guarantee increased persecution against them or at a minimum, entrench their second-hand status in the country.
Murbarak was far from benevolent – but at least he kept the Brotherhood in line – and he protected the Copts:
He not only allowed them previously denied religious freedoms – everything from the right to repair their churches to live broadcasts of Easter services – but he also punished Islamists who persecuted them.
Where will they turn for protection now? (Don’t anticipate any assistance from the Obama administation!)
Barry Rubin, at PJ Media, made several astute observations about what the Egyptian elections really represent in his post on Monday: Egypt: We’ve Heard What the Majority Thinks ~
• Basically, nationalism has collapsed completely. Liberalism is weak. Moderate Muslims are few. Radical Islamism is the only game in town. Remember that: no alternative exists to an extremist, repressive, anti-Western, anti-Jewish, anti-Christian ideology.
• Egypt is not a parliamentary system, but a presidential one. There will be no coalition to get a majority in parliament and choose a prime minister. Therefore, the Muslim Brotherhood and al-Nour (Salafist -militant group of extremist Sunnis) do not need to become direct partners, but only to vote together on specific measures and on electing those who will draw up a constitution.
• We are back to the wild 1952-1970 era of regional subversion, anti-Westernism, instability, and Arab-Israeli conflict, except for the substitution of Islamism for Gamal Abd al-Nasser’s Arab nationalism.
And my personal favorite ~
• Western mainstream media is totally out of touch with reality. Many Western journalists and prestigious newspapers insist that the Egyptian people don’t want an Islamist state. Of course they do! We are seeing the democratic election of a dictatorship.
Rubin offers this advice to all Egyptian non-Muslims:
If you are a secularist, a “modern woman,” or a Christian, it’s probably time to get in line at some foreign embassy for a visa. Today, people may think that is an alarmist statement. In a year everyone will know it to be true. I already know people who have left the country.
…An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.”
~ Matthew 2:13 ~
After Jesus’ birth, two millennia ago, Joseph fled with his young family from Bethlehem to Egypt to escape King Herod’s wrath. Today, that country is no longer a safe haven for God’s people; Christian or Jew.
May His Holy Spirit be with them, to strengthen and preserve their faith.
Deciphering B.O.’s B.S.
Did you catch the President’s speech Tuesday? Channeling Teddy Roosevelt, Mr. Razzle-Dazzle attempted to inspire America’s downtrodden proletariat.
Wading through all the misinformation, empty rhetoric, and flat out deceit, I’ve decoded some of his more obvious propaganda~
Omaba blather:
For many years, credit cards and home equity loans papered over the harsh realities of this new economy. But in 2008, the house of cards collapsed. We all know the story by now: Mortgages sold to people who couldn’t afford them, or sometimes even understand them. Banks and investors allowed to keep packaging the risk and selling it off. Huge bets – and huge bonuses – made with other people’s money on the line.
Deciphered:
If we just keep repeating the lie, you suckers will believe it. And you’ll forget all about how Congress started the mortgage crisis ball rolling.
Omaba blather:
I’m here to reaffirm my deep conviction that we are greater together than we are on our own. I believe that this country succeeds when everyone gets a fair shot, when everyone does their fair share, and when everyone plays by the same rules. Those aren’t Democratic or Republican values; 1% values or 99% values. They’re American values, and we have to reclaim them.
Deciphered:
If I just mischaracterize long-held American principles enough, I’ll be able to convince you rubes that collectivism is the only solution to our economic woes.
Omaba blather:
Today, over one hundred years later, our economy has gone through another transformation. Over the last few decades, huge advances in technology have allowed businesses to do more with less, and made it easier for them to set up shop and hire workers anywhere in the world. And many of you know firsthand the painful disruptions this has caused for a lot of Americans.
Deciphered:
Forget how technology has improved the lives of millions. Forget that businesses move off-shore because government regulations and tax burdens drive them there. Just remember, the private sector is inherently evil; only the government can save you from yourselves.
Omaba blather:
It’s a simple theory – one that speaks to our rugged individualism and healthy skepticism of too much government. It fits well on a bumper sticker. Here’s the problem: It doesn’t work. It’s never worked. It didn’t work when it was tried in the decade before the Great Depression. It’s not what led to the incredible post-war boom of the 50s and 60s. And it didn’t work when we tried it during the last decade.
Deciphered:
I’m lying again – and re-writing history – because I want you to believe that without Big Government you’re doomed. I mean look how well Big Government Central Planning solves all the problems in the world – look at the success of the Soviet Union… uh, well, maybe not that… But there’s Europe. Like Greece, um.. Spain, ah… China! There you go! China: “equal misery for all.”
Omaba blather:
I’ll give you one example. For the first time in history, the reform we passed puts in place a consumer watchdog (Another Czar 😯 ) who is charged with protecting everyday Americans from being taken advantage of by mortgage lenders, payday lenders or debt collectors…
…Every day we go without a consumer watchdog in place is another day when a student, or a senior citizen, or member of our Armed Forces could be tricked into a loan they can’t afford – something that happens all the time.
Deciphered:
Because for the first time in our nation’s history, Americans are suddenly too stupid to understand that if you take out a loan you’re actually expected to pay it back at some point. Also, it’s just not “fair” for people to face the consequences of their own irresponsibility.
Omaba blather:
It’s heartbreaking enough that there are millions of working families in this country who are now forced to take their children to food banks for a decent meal. But the idea that those children might not have a chance to climb out of that situation and back into the middle class, no matter how hard they work? That’s inexcusable. It’s wrong. It flies in the face of everything we stand for.
Deciphered:
Gotta sound like I really care… (Even though I’d rather be golfing.)
And just because my administration has done everything it can to destroy the economydon’t blame us.
Omaba blather:
That’s why we’re cutting programs we don’t need, to pay for those we do. That’s why we’ve made hundreds of regulatory reforms that will save businesses billions of dollars.
Deciphered:
More lies – I’m on a roll here. But the adoring media doesn’t care, and they know you’ll never check the facts.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Behind the President’s entire speech are carefully-constructed subliminal messages: The wealthy are holding you down. Envy the wealthy. Resent the wealthy. Hate the wealthy. Steal their wealth. You’re entitiled.
And then he has the audacity to say: “This isn’t about class warfare.”

Actually…all this translation is exhausting – and depressing.
The best approach to Obama’s oratory is to simply keep in mind: if his mouth is open, he’s lying.

Founding Wisdom [Flouted by the Foolish]

“I have lived, sir, a long time; and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth, that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid?”

Newt believes in the environment…and Elitism

Did you catch Newt Gingrich on Glenn Beck’s radio show this morning? I only heard the tail end of the interview, but read the full transcript HERE. Although he’s not always easy to compartmentalize, the interview does provide an insight into Gingrich’s philosophy on the government ‘s role in our lives – and it’s way too intrusive for my taste.

The Newtster frequently comes across as conservative – if so, he’s of the Big Benevolent Government species – which is to say, he’s not really a conservative at all. There’s no questioning his intelligence, and he can certainly clean up in a debate. But Newt is a member in good standing of the elite ruling class. He fundamentally he does not believe that the peasants are capable of self-governance.

But he does believe in the environment…generally speaking of course.

Newt’s answers to several of Beck’s questions were clearly not the responses of a free-market, limited government conservative.
For instance:

On industry subsidies: “depends on what you’re subsidizing” What if we don’t want our tax dollars to subsidize anything?

On healthcare : “ …we ought to have some requirement to either have health insurance or you post a bond or in some way you indicate you are going to be held accountable.” An individual mandate? No thanks!

On climate change: “I believe in the environment in general… (HUH?) I think that there is evidence on both sides of the climate change argument, and the point I was making was in a situation where, for example, having a larger nuclear program reduces carbon in the atmosphere, it’s a prudent thing to look at nuclear as one of the actions.”
The only “evidence” on the AGW side of the argument is phony evidence.

On Medicare reform: “I also think you can reshape Medicare but I think you have to do it in a way that people find it desirable and that people think and that people trust you. I helped reform Medicare in 1996 in a way that saved $200 billion and we had no major opposition to it. And people concluded that we had thought it through and we were doing the right thing and they were comfortable with it.” Yes, it’s really just a matter of herding the masses along, reeducating them so they’ll come to accept with what’s best for them…
~~~~~~~~~
However Gingrich would personally characterize his political philosophy, what it really comes down to is the freedom-killing belief that the government knows how to spend your money better than you do.
From the evidence so far, the best thing about Newt…? He’s not Obama.
Attention Shoppers – only 26 more shopping days until the “100 Watt Bulb-Ban” kicks in
Yes ladies and gentlemen, in case you haven’t heard, our massive, out-of-control federal bureaucracy has decided incandescent bulbs represent such a dire threat to the planet that they simply can’t allow any more to be manufactured. As of January 1st,
…the sale of traditional 100-watt incandescent light bulbs will become illegal in the United States. Twelve months later, the same fate will befall most 75-watt incandescents, and one year after that, conventional 60- and 40-watt bulbs will be gone as well.
This idiocy was pushed by the Department of Energy, rammed through by a Democratic congress, and signed into law by George W. Bush, back in 2007. Ostensibly, the legislation was aimed at protecting the environment (based, of course, on the junk science behind man-made global warming) but the move was really just another display of D.C.’s dishonest dealing:
The use of efficiency mandates to snuff out the standard light bulb was an exercise of unadulterated crony capitalism. It came about after big bulb manufacturers, frustrated by their customers’ refusal to switch from cheap throwaway incandescents to the far more profitable compact fluorescents touted by greens, decided to play hardball…
The manufacturers got together, organized, and lobbied Congress –
…to croak a product Americans overwhelmingly like and compel them to buy the more expensive substitute the industry was eager to sell them. The entire scheme, a lobbyist for the National Electrical Manufacturers Association testified candidly in 2007, was “at the industry’s initiative.’’ Unable to convince consumers to voluntarily abandon Edison’s light bulb, Big Business got the government to force the issue. [Source]
But even more importantly, beyond the corrupt politics-as-usual, the new CFLs (compact fluorescent lights) that they’re foisting on us to replace the incandescents, can be seriously hazardous to your health. The problem is that the cute curly bulbs contain mercury, which is a neurotoxin and considered hazardous waste. If one happens to break, it releases gaseous mercury. When initially turned on, they release chemicals into the atmosphere that are known to cause cancer. Even better, CFLs operate at a much higher frequency than incandescent bulbs, causing them to emit UV radiation. What’s not to love?
Last month, our local radio station, WJR-Detroit, interviewed Dr. Magda Havas, of Trent University in Ontario, who has studied this issue in depth and believes “governments shouldn’t be promoting CFLs – they should be banning them.”
Among the health-related problems attributed to CFLs are:
• Mild to severe Headaches (Migraines)
• Skin Irritation, redness, burning sensations, and or itchiness
• Dizziness and Nausea
• Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and Earaches
• Numbness and Tingling sensations
• Tired, Weak and Fatigued
• Difficulty Sleeping / Restlessness
• Chest Pains / Heart Problems
• Poor Memory and Concentration
• Irritability
• Feelings of Stress and Anxiety
• Depression and Mood Swings
• Difficulty breathing
• Muscle and joint pain
• Pain and pressure in the eyes
Gee – hard to believe that our nanny-state politicians might not really have our health and well-being as a top priority isn’t it?
Actually, the bulb-ban suits their devious purposes just fine. Appearing to have the best of intentions, making a phony show of saving the environment, they actually jeopardize the health of millions of Americans, and steal our freedom of choice as consumers, all the while they’re getting paid off by lobbyists. They probably call it a “win-win.”
I call it nefarious.
~~~~~~~~~

So if you’re looking for a Christmas gift that really says “I love you” – buy a bunch of 100 watts – before they’re all gone. All my peeps are getting a bag-full!

Obamacare – “Cure” for Prosperity

George Will , “conservative political pundit” is mostly a RINO – which makes him weak on freedom and liberty issues (we “rubes” simply can’t be left to our own devices) – but fairly reliable when it comes to economic matters. In any case, his article yesterday in the New York Post was heavy on facts and light on opinion, so I’m reasonably confident we’re getting an objective analysis here.

In “… and ObamaCare kills jobs, too”, Will details the adverse effect that the new healthcare legislation will have on just one company – CKE Restaurants (Carl’s Jr. & Hardees) – a business that accounts for some 70,000 jobs nationwide.

When CKE’s health care advisers, citing ObamaCare’s complexities, opacities and uncertainties, said it would add between $7.3 million and $35.1 million to the company’s $12 million health care costs in 2010, Puzder (CKE’s CEO) said: I need a number I can plan with. They guessed $18 million — twice what CKE spent last year building new restaurants. ObamaCare must mean fewer restaurants…

…The health-care benefits under CKE’s current “mini-med” plans are capped in a way that makes them illegal under ObamaCare. So CKE will have to convert many full-time employees to part-timers to limit the growth of its burdens under ObamaCare.

Heritages’ Foundry arrives at the same conclusion about the punitive nature of the new healthcare law, and reports that in Michigan, Obamacare is Already a Job-Killer.

Beginning in 2013, the new legislation targets medical device manufacturers, a business segment that currently employs roughly 400,000 Americans, for a significant tax increase:

…the new 2.3% excise tax will roughly double the device industry’s total tax bill and raise the average effective corporate income tax rate to one the highest effective tax rates faced by any industry in the world.

I guess this must be the Preventing Innovation in the Medical Technology Field clause of Obamacare!

Anticipating the adverse effect that the higher tax will have on their bottom line, Stryker Corporation of Michigan, an orthopedic device manufacturer, has announced that it will layoff 5% of its workforce by 2013. That represents at least 110 employees just in Kalamazoo – where the company is headquartered. Doesn’t sound like many, but it will only help push Michigan’s 11% unemployment rate even higher.

Ultimately, Obamacare will have such a detrimental impact on job growth and the overall health of our economy you’d almost think the administration prescribed it that way 😈 … Nah.

Peace on Earth Goodwill to Men

The lyrics to “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” are from a poem titled “Christmas Bells” written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, on December 25th, 1864. At the time, America was still immersed in the horrors of the Civil War. Longfellow was struggling with personal hardship as well; his wife had recently died tragically, and his son was suffering critical war injuries. Reflecting the despair he’s feeling, his poem begins on a somber note that gradually and confidently changes to renewed hope of triumphant peace – as he listens to the Christmas bells…

“God is not dead, nor does He sleep!”

One of my absolute favorite Christmas songs. Casting Crowns’ version does a wonderful job of bringing out the emotions behind Longfellow’s poem.
