Saturday Shorts – 1-19-13

Random links of interest, concern or curiosity from the past week or so, that deserve at least a SHORT mention:

Weekend at Hugo’s: AP Misses That Chavez Decree Was Supposedly Signed in Caracas ~
How did Venezuelan Presidente Hugo Chavez sign a decree (naming a new foreign minister) in Caracus on January 15 when he supposedly had been in Cuba recuperating from cancer surgery (for the previous five weeks)??

Germany’s Bundesbank to pull gold from New York and Paris in watershed moment ~ Time to panic yet…?

Bundesbank’s move is a pivotal event in the gold market and the latest warning for investors that they should keep metal bars under their physcial control, rather than relying on paper contracts.
“This sends a message about storing gold near you and taking delivery no matter who is holding it. When France did this years ago it sent panic amongst the US financial leadership. History will look back on this salvo as being the beginning of the end of the US dollar as the reserve currency of choice,” Veteran gold trader Jim Sinclair

Obama’s Religious Freedom Proclamation ~ Oxymoronic headline eh?
Let’s see; HHS birth control mandate, non-defense of DOMA, State Dept. indifference to world-wide abuses…
Words that don’t match deeds from this President simply add insult to the many injuries his Administration has caused people of faith in the past four years.

Anti-American Asians don’t speak for me ~ from Michelle Malkin.
Happy to take millions from the corrupt capitalists Jackie Chan proudly admits that he is a propagandist for the Communist Chinese government.

Then there’s PSY, the Korean rapper whose “Gangnam Style” music video has racked up more than a billion views worldwide. He’ll take the “free speech” thing, but “kill those (expletive deleted) Yankees … kill their daughters, mothers, daughters-in-law and fathers.” Charming.

Mr. President, Chicago’s Gun Victims Need You Now ~

It’s really not much of an exaggeration to say that parts of Chicago resemble a war zone. The numbers are grim. Unofficially, there were 513 homicides in Chicago in 2012, nearly 100 more than New York City, which recorded 414 killings but which has a population three times larger. Chicago’s body count is 200 more than the number of U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan last year. The carnage has continued unabated into the New Year.

Unfortunately for Chicago’s victims, the harsh reality is that Obama doesn’t care. When it comes to advancing his progressive agenda he can get a whole lot more political mileage from dead suburban school kids than dead inner-city youth.

West Point center cites dangers of ‘far right’ in U.S. UN-believable. Must be all those violent incidents at the Tea Party rallies. And those radical values; “civil activism, individual freedoms and self-government.”

Looking Back at a Better America

What was America like before the country was $16.4 trillion in debt and 47 million people were on food stamps? Before there were more divorces than marriages, back when babies were “gifts from God” to be cherished, not “punishments” to be aborted? When deranged misfits never walked into schools and started randomly killing kids???

For those of us who can remember, as well as those who want to know what they missed, here are a few of the things Edward L. Daley (at Family Security Matters) fondly recalls about the United States from a much different time – When I Was A Kid: Reflections Of A 50-Year-Old American ~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
• Boosting a kid’s self-esteem was maybe the last thing any teacher cared about. Forcing their students to study and get good grades was the top priority, and accomplishing that goal naturally led to kids feeling better about themselves.
• A rich person was somebody you aspired to be like, not somebody you sought to punish.
• Men were builders, risk-takers, hunters, warriors, protectors and heads of their households. Women were refiners, nesters, nurturers, teachers and disciplinarians who were usually willing to let their male counterparts delude themselves into thinking that men were the heads of their households.
• Able-bodied people who received public assistance were pitied by other folks, and most of them felt shame for allowing themselves to become dependent on the government for their sustenance.
• Books were more popular than food stamps.
• Marriage was an institution that a man and a woman entered into when they wanted to exhibit their commitment to one another, their willingness to accept adult responsibilities, and their desire to legitimize their offspring. It had nothing to do with making a political point.
• There wasn’t a single kid in my school who couldn’t read, write, do basic math or recite the Pledge of Allegiance by the time they were eight years old… not one.
• Abortion wasn’t a privacy issue, it was a moral issue, and people who committed abortions weren’t “pro-choice”, they were baby killers.
• The application of oil and its byproducts to run machinery and generate electricity was widely understood to be as important to the advancement of human civilization as the discovery and utilization of fire, the practices of cultivating crops and breeding livestock, and the development of a written language.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In short, the America of the 50’s, 60’s and to some extent the 70’s, was far and away a better place to be than where we are now.

Oh, it wasn’t perfect. Human nature being what it is, no society ever has been or will be perfect. But we were a much more decent, prosperous, amiable, life-affirming, generous and united country back then. It was a time where moral relativity hadn’t yet taken hold and before political correctness had all but destroyed common sense.

• The United States of America was the greatest nation in the history of the world, bar none, and just about every American school kid knew why. Our brilliantly conceived Constitution, Judeo-Christian ethic, free market economic system, adherence to the rule of law and willingness to embrace people from every culture on Earth made us great, and we were conspicuously proud of that fact.

Our progressive friends are ostensibly seeking utopia. Yet in their blind allegiance to a misguided ideology, they’ve all but destroyed the one civilization that’s even come close.

Founding Wisdom – Flouted by the Foolish

A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks.

Journalistic Malpractice at the Journal-News

New York’s Journal-News must have thought the year-end stories from their suburban NYC beat just weren’t exciting enough. So in late December they decided to create their own news: Newspaper sparks outrage for publishing names, addresses of gun permit holders.

Seems to me that publishing a list of New York’s legal gun owners is so brazenly irresponsible, it’s practicallly the journalistic equivalent of yelling “Fire!” in a crowded theater. But apparently the Journal-News believes freedom of the press means editorial activism – and “anything that furthers our agenda is OK to print” – responsible journalism be damned.

Like all actions of course, the Journal-News’ had consequences…

Fox News published this prophetic article online on Jan. 6th: Ex-Burglars Say Newspaper’s Gun Map Would’ve Made the Job Easier, Safer ~

The information published online by the Journal-News, a daily paper serving the suburbs of Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties, could be highly useful to thieves in two ways, former burglars told FoxNews.com. Crooks looking to avoid getting shot now know which targets are soft and those who need weapons know where they can steal them.

And… SURPRISE! They were right! Gun Owner Outed by Newspaper Is Burglarized

The home of a gun owner, whose address was published by a New York newspaper, has been burglarized and a state lawmaker said it appears the burglars may have used the newspaper’s map to target the residence.

It was only a matter of time. And I’m willing to bet that this burglary won’t be the last. The Fox News article continued ~

Frank Abagnale, who was portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio in the 2002 film “Catch Me if You Can,” and is perhaps the most famous reformed thief to ever earn a legitimate living by offering the public insight into the criminal mind, called the newspaper’s actions “reprehensible.”

“It is unbelievable that a newspaper or so called journalist would publish the names and addresses of legal gun owners, including federal agents, law enforcement officers and the like,” said Abagnale, who noted that he grew up in the suburban New York area served by the Journal-News. “This would be equivalent to publishing the names of individuals who keep substantial sums of money, jewelry and valuables in their home.”

Oddly enough, the paper’s anti-gun execs make an exception for firearms – at least those that are in the hands of their personal security staff: NY newspaper that outed gun owners hires armed guards.

Here’s Judge Jeanine Pirro (who just happened to be one of the gun owners on the published list) with an excellent smackdown of the hypocritical leftists at the paper:

Unmasking the Left’s Faux Freedom Agenda

If nothing else, the current controversy over gun control has exposed the true colors of the Left. And they’re definitely not red, white and blue.

Adept at sounding patriotic, our progressive pals have actually “evolved” to the point where they reject most of America’s founding principles.

Oh, they’ll take freedom of speech – but only for themselves. Freedom of religion has morphed into freedom from religion. And the second amendment is all about hunting, it has nothing to do with actually defending personal liberty.

For the most part the main steam media has mastered the art of duplicity when it comes to “informing” the masses. But sometimes the mask slips.

Ben Shapiro [Breitbart.com] had fun messing with CNN’s Piers Morgan last Thursday, skillfully prompting the cable host to reveal his real sentiments about a “little book” called the Constitution. Shapiro was on Morgan’s show to discuss the fractious issue of gun control.
From “Why I Brought Piers Morgan That ‘Little Book'” ~

The left pretends it is for the Second Amendment because it recognizes that the American public likes the Second Amendment. But the left has no real defense for the Second Amendment on a philosophical level. They say that they want assault weapons gone, as Piers Morgan does, in order to prevent gun death. But then they say that they’re fine with handgun ownership, which is the instrument used in exponentially more gun death. They can’t explain this mental gymnastics. When I asked Morgan about it, he replied, “We’ll come to that.” He never did…

… (Morgan) claimed he loved the Second Amendment. “I believe and respect an American’s (right), under the second amendment of the Constitution – that you kindly brought in – to defend themselves with a handgun or a pistol.” But when I explained to Morgan just why the Second Amendment was enshrined into law – in order to prevent the threat of foreign invasion and domestic usurpation – he balked and said that such an argument was absurd.

And how does he really feel about the Constitution?

… (A)ngry at me for having failed to bow to a bevy of rhetorical gambits culminating in a lackluster attempt to browbeat me with an old letter of Ronald Reagan’s, Morgan grabbed the copy of the Constitution I’d brought. Waving it my face, he nearly shouted, “You come in, you brandish your little book –”

For just a moment, the mask slipped. To Morgan, the Constitution was nothing more than a little book, not the single most important document in American history and the basis for the freest and most powerful nation in world history. It wasn’t a document to which politicians swear allegiance and for which American soldiers shed blood. It was a little book, an annoyance in the way of his all-compassionate perspective on gun control.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The founders’ primary intention when drafting the United States Constitution was to enshrine self-governance. They sought to prevent a ruling class from emerging, becoming tyrants, and forcing their will on the people. Their aim was to keep governmental power concentrated in the hands of “we the people.”
Which is exactly why the Left hates the document. To Morgan, and his elitist cohorts in D.C. and the main stream media, the Constitution is, as Shapiro puts it; “a speed bump on the road to progress.” Just “an inconvenient relic of a bygone age.”
Saturday Shorts – 1-12-13
Random links of interest, concern or curiosity from the past week or so, that deserve at least a SHORT mention:
Gaza’s archaeological treasures at risk from war and neglect ~ Too bad the surrounding Muslim countries decided to turn the “Palestinians” into perpetual, political pawns. Because now, Gaza’s rich history, spanning tens of eras and civilizations, risks being lost forever.
Obama Admin. Pushes to Restrict 2nd Amendment after Arming Mexican Cartels ~ [There’s also the Benghazi debacle, which sure looks like a US-supplied weapons-for-terrorists deal gone wrong]
Are you a law-abiding United States citizen? Congratulations, you have fewer rights to own guns than drug cartels in the middle of Mexico.
They’ve already figured that out in the Cowboy state ~
Wyoming lawmakers push gun control exemption.
Folks, we are now dealing with outright tyrants in the federal government. They’re hellbent on usurping any and all power from the people.
If our constitutional rights mean anything to you – and you want them preserved for future generations, consider signing this pledge at the Patriot Post:
We, the People, affirm that we will support and defend Liberty as “endowed by our Creator,” enshrined in our Constitution and empowered by its Second Amendment, “against all enemies, foreign and domestic”…
Unlikely Second Amendment Supporter… Pravda
How deliciously ironic – Pravda is giving us advice; Americans never give up your guns, along with a short history lesson ~
This will probably come as a total shock to most of my Western readers, but at one point, Russia was one of the most heavily armed societies on earth. This was, of course, when we were free under the Tsar. Weapons, from swords and spears to pistols, rifles and shotguns were everywhere, common items. People carried them concealed, they carried them holstered. Fighting knives were a prominent part of many traditional attires and those little tubes criss crossing on the costumes of Cossacks and various Caucasian peoples? Well those are bullet holders for rifles.
After Moscow fell to the Reds (Soviets)…
… One of the first things they did was to disarm the population. From that point, mass repression, mass arrests, mass deportations, mass murder, mass starvation were all a safe game for the powers that were. The worst they had to fear was a pitchfork in the guts or a knife in the back or the occasional hunting rifle. Not much for soldiers.
Around the world, and across the centuries, gun control is always about controlling the power.
For those of us fighting for our traditional rights, the US 2nd Amendment is a rare light in an ever darkening room. Governments will use the excuse of trying to protect the people from maniacs and crime, but are in reality, it is the bureaucrats protecting their power and position.
In all cases where guns are banned, gun crime continues and often increases. As for maniacs, be it nuts with cars (NYC, Chapel Hill NC), swords (Japan), knives (China) or home made bombs (everywhere), insane people strike. They throw acid (Pakistan, UK), they throw fire bombs (France), they attack. What is worse, is, that the best way to stop a maniac is not psychology or jail or “talking to them”, it is a bullet in the head, that is why they are a maniac, because they are incapable of living in reality or stopping themselves.
Yesterday the leftist media-types were appalled at the Drudge Report for not-so-subtly implying that the Obama administration could possibly have anything in common with Adolf or Uncle Joe ~
Perhaps if they read Stanislav Mishin’s Pravda article they’d move beyond their revisionist version of history and develop an honestly informed perspective ~
There is a lot of desire to bad mouth the Tsar, particularly by the Communists, who claim he was a tyrant, and yet under him we were armed and under the progressives disarmed. Do not be fooled by a belief that progressives, leftists hate guns. Oh, no, they do not. What they hate is guns in the hands of those who are not marching in lock step of their ideology. They hate guns in the hands of those who think for themselves and do not obey without question.
They hate anyone who threatens their power.
Ephemeral Empires
Here’s a little historical perspective that ties in well with my last post:
Empires Rise and Empires Fall. Dr. Robert Owens, writing at the It Makes Sense Blog, provides a couple brief but excellent summaries of 1.) Rome’s demise and 2.) the contraction of the British Empire.
The disconcerting parallels in contemporary America are obvious ~
For centuries this once vibrant nation (Rome) of freemen sank beneath the weight of regulations, taxes, inflation, and tyranny. For centuries after their power had been usurped by the ever more absolute Emperors there was still a Senate, there were still elections, and there were still courts charged with safeguarding the Republic.
Freedom was extinguished, and the yeoman farmers who had supported the Republic and filled its armies became first tenant farmers. Then they morphed into an unemployed rabble choking the streets of an imperial capital living on government bread and entertained by government circuses.
Still, the world goes on…
Dr. Owens concludes his article by reminding us that all human civilizations are transient; but God’s faithfulness is eternal ~
Like Rome this empire won’t fall it will collapse. Like Britain we will pretend that the empire exists long after we know the emperor has no clothes.
Our only hope as a nation is to jettison the Empire to save the Republic. On a personal level we must lead our families in a restoration of the work ethic and a return to moral sanity. Either we individually spark a revival of what made us great or we sink into the hole dug by moral rot and the decay of ambition…
…Keep the faith, keep the peace, we shall overcome.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Therefore, do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet our inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

~ 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Facing Up to America’s Decline

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government.
It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.

The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence: ”From bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; From liberty to abundance; From abundance to selfishness; From selfishness to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage.”

~ Alexander Fraser Tytler (later Lord Alexander Fraser Woodhouslee), in “The Decline and Fall of the Athenian Republic,” published 1776.

Quote via Crush Liberalism

While we’re fond of citing the above sentiment in cautionary tones, up until two months ago I think most conservatives were still clinging to the hope that America would prove the exception to this historical truth. Since November 6th that wishful thinking has pretty much dissipated.

Time to wake up and face facts.

I recently ran across an illuminating article by Rabbi Steven Pruzansky (Teaneck, New Jersey) written immediately after the election: The Decline and Fall of the American Empire.
Whether the Rabbi was more prescient than most and had already analyzed the outcome – or he was just suddenly inspired as the results started rolling in – he definitely managed to capture the depressing reality; America is now somewhere between selfishness and bondage on the civilizational timeline.

This is painfully obvious once we come to terms with the real reasons Romney lost ~

• The lure of free stuff is irresistible.
• Voters – a clear majority – are easily swayed by emotion and raw populism. Said another way, too many people vote with their hearts and not their heads.
• Low-information (ignorant) voters ~

One might reasonably object that not every Obama supporter could be unintelligent. But they must then rationally explain how the Obama agenda can be paid for, aside from racking up multi-trillion dollar deficits. “Taxing the rich” does not yield even 10% of what is required and does not solve any discernible problem – so what is the answer, i.e., an intelligent answer?

Ultimately, Romney lost because of a huge shift in core American values.

It turned out that it was not possible for Romney and Ryan – people of substance, depth and ideas – to compete with the shallow populism and platitudes of their opponents. Obama mastered the politics of envy – of class warfare – never reaching out to Americans as such but to individual groups, and cobbling together a winning majority from these minority groups. Conservative ideas failed to take root and states that seemed winnable, and amenable to traditional American values, have simply disappeared from the map. If an Obama could not be defeated – with his record and his vision of America, in which free stuff seduces voters – it is hard to envision any change in the future. The road to Hillary Clinton in 2016 and to a European-socialist economy – those very economies that are collapsing today in Europe – is paved.

The American empire began to decline in 2007 (I would argue the decline began centuries ago with Woodrow Wilson and the state-worshipping progressives), and the deterioration has been exacerbated in the last five years.

This election only hastens that decline. Society is permeated with sloth, greed, envy and materialistic excess. It has lost its moorings and its moral foundations. The takers outnumber the givers, and that will only increase in years to come. Across the world, America under Bush was feared but not respected. Under Obama, America is neither feared nor respected. Radical Islam has had a banner four years under Obama, and its prospects for future growth look excellent. The “Occupy” riots across this country in the last two years were mere dress rehearsals for what lies ahead – years of unrest sparked by the increasing discontent of the unsuccessful who want to seize the fruits and the bounty of the successful, and do not appreciate the slow pace of redistribution.

This election, more than any other event in the last couple of decades, clearly points to America’s inevitable demise. It’s only a matter of time (and God’s patience)…

Romney lost because the conservative virtues – the traditional American virtues – of liberty, hard work, free enterprise, private initiative and aspirations to moral greatness – no longer inspire or animate a majority of the electorate. The notion of the “Reagan Democrat” is one cliché that should be permanently retired.

The sad reality – as our nation slips back into bondage;

Ronald Reagan himself could not win an election in today’s America.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
