Skip the MSM Spin; Here are the Simple Facts Behind the Shutdown

Who’s responsible for the government shutdown? And how do we start it back up?
For the answers, turn off the network news and read this succinctly brilliant article by Thomas Sowell ~

[Hat-tip: Chadams]

Even when it comes to something as basic, and apparently as simple and straightforward, as the question of who shut down the federal government, there are diametrically opposite answers, depending on whether you talk to Democrats or to Republicans.

There is really nothing complicated about the FACTS ~

• The Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted all the money required to keep all government activities going — except for ObamaCare.
This is not a matter of opinion. You can check the Congressional Record.

• As for the House of Representatives’ right to grant or withhold money, that is not a matter of opinion either. You can check the Constitution of the United States.
All spending bills must originate in the House of Representatives, which means that Congressmen there have a right to decide whether or not they want to spend money on a particular government activity.

• Whether ObamaCare is good, bad or indifferent is a matter of opinion.
But it is a matter of fact that members of the House of Representatives have a right to make spending decisions based on their opinion.

• ObamaCare is indeed “the law of the land,” as its supporters keep saying, and the Supreme Court has upheld its Constitutionality.
But the whole point of having a division of powers within the federal government is that each branch can decide independently what it wants to do or not do, regardless of what the other branches do, when exercising the powers specifically granted to that branch by the Constitution.

• The hundreds of thousands of government workers who have been laid off are not idle because the House of Representatives did not vote enough money to pay their salaries or the other expenses of their agencies — unless they are in an agency that would administer ObamaCare.

Since we cannot read minds, we cannot say who — if anybody — “wants to shut down the government.” But we do know who had the option to keep the government running and chose not to. The money voted by the House of Representatives covered everything that the government does, except for ObamaCare.

The Senate chose not to vote to authorize that money to be spent, because it did not include money for ObamaCare. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says that he wants a “clean” bill from the House of Representatives, and some in the media keep repeating the word “clean” like a mantra. But what is unclean about not giving Harry Reid everything he wants?

If Senator Reid and President Obama refuse to accept the money required to run the government, because it leaves out the money they want to run ObamaCare, that is their right. But that is also their responsibility.

You cannot blame other people for not giving you everything you want. And it is a fraud to blame them when you refuse to use the money they did vote, even when it is ample to pay for everything else in the government.

• When Barack Obama keeps claiming that it is some new outrage for those who control the money to try to change government policy by granting or withholding money, that is simply a bald-faced lie.

You can check the history of other examples of “legislation by appropriation” as it used to be called.

• Whether legislation by appropriation is a good idea or a bad idea is a matter of opinion.
But whether it is both legal and not unprecedented is a matter of fact.

• Perhaps the biggest of the big lies is that the government will not be able to pay what it owes on the national debt, creating a danger of default.
Tax money keeps coming into the Treasury during the shutdown, and it vastly exceeds the interest that has to be paid on the national debt.

• Even if the debt ceiling is not lifted, that only means that government is not allowed to run up new debt.
But that does not mean that it is unable to pay the interest on existing debt.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
None of this is rocket science. But unless the Republicans get their side of the story out — and articulation has never been their strong suit — the lies will win. More important, the whole country will lose.
Please pass this post on to any low information voters of your acquaintance who are still confused. Thanks!
Obamacare Facebook Erupts with Citizen Sticker Shock ~ Breitbart
“I am so disappointed,” wrote one woman. “These prices are outrageous and there are huge deductibles. No one can afford this!”[…]
(Another) person shared a link found on the federal government’s main Obamacare page listing premium estimates for small business employers:
The information is not very complete as I don’t see anything about deductible or other detailed info, but it does given an actual price as to the “Premium.” It is VERY SCARY!! For example, my insurance plan right now for my spouse and I costs $545 a month with 100% coverage after my $2500 deductible. We are both 32 years old. When I looked at this site for 80% coverage it says it will be $954.78 a month!!!! So compare my old Plan: 100% coverage for $545 a month To New Plan: 80% Coverage for $945 a month. This is only only an estimate but it is VERY Scary for me to see this kind of increase in rates and reduction in benefits!
A single mother of two said she is in school and working full-time while living “75% below the poverty level.” She said she was shocked to learn she did not qualify for a healthcare subsidy. “Are you F’ing kidding me????” she wrote on the government’s Obamacare Facebook page. “Where the HELL am I supposed to get $3,000 more a year to pay for this ‘bronze’ health insurance plan!?!??? And I DO NOT EVEN WANT INSURANCE to begin with!! This is frightening,” she wrote.
Hey folks, this is the transformational change you were hoping for. Although it must be tough when you finally figure out there really is no free lunch. 😯
As my cousin quips from time to time: “it shouldn’t hurt to be stupid.”
I’d be tempted to laugh at these tragic low-info voters – were my family not in the same sinking boat.
And let’s not forget- more misery lies ahead – as Breitbart points out:
Obamacare will cost taxpayers an estimated $2.6 trillion over the next 10 years.
The Matthew Shepard Murder: A Case Study in Media Manipulation
Up-date: 10-7-13
Media Matters Tries to Torpedo Reporter’s Matthew Shepard Book ~ When you stray from the leftist line, expect to be vilified.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

10-4-13

It’s been fifteen years, but the real story about the horrible murder of Matthew Shepard in Wyoming is finally “out.” Unfortunately the mainstream media outlets couldn’t care less, so not many Americans will ever learn the truth.

Shepard’s 1988 murder was exploited to drive sympathy for the LGBT cause; Matthew was held up as the tragic victim of a homophobic hate crime. But according to a new release “The Book of Matt,” (written by Stephen Jimenez, himself a homosexual) the murder was tied to drugs – not “gay hate.” Brent Bozell at Media Research Center discusses the book – and how the msm is totally ignoring it – in his recent article: The Gay Passion Play Unravels? ~

Jimenez argues after years of research and interviews that Shepard and his killers Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson were deeply involved in drugs. Not only that, they may not be straight men. McKinney presented himself as a “straight hustler” turning tricks for money or drugs, but others say he’s bisexual. A former lover of Shepard’s claims Shepard and McKinney had sex while doing drugs in the back of a limo. As Hicklin recounted, “A manager of a gay bar in Denver recalls seeing photos of McKinney and Henderson in the papers and recognizing them as patrons of his bar. He recounts his shock at realizing “these guys who killed that kid came from inside our own community.’”

Will the real facts of the case ever make it out of Jimenez’ book? Not likely. Or at least not enough to reach the millions who already have the false scenario firmly embedded in their minds.

And the media has no intention of clearing things up. They’ve pretty much ignored “The Book of Matt,” which comes as no surprise, when you learn that (t)he Shepard gay hate crime victim story was exposed as false … almost ten years ago, and the leftists said nothing then ~

ABC’s “20/20″ took apart the legend in 2004. Elizabeth Vargas told Bill O’Reilly that the prosecutor in the Shepard case never believed it was a hate crime. Instead, it was about drugs: “Aaron McKinney, according to Aaron McKinney himself and to several other witnesses, was coming down from a five-day methamphetamine binge. He freely admits he not only used methamphetamine but dealt them, sold them. Five days up with no sleep, strung out on drugs, desperate to buy more, desperate to rob somebody to get money to buy more drugs.”

You see, it’s only news if it fits the agenda.

The leftist media has employed the same methodology for years (it’s a strategy that’s particularly successful with low-information voters):

• Spin lie(s)
• Disperse false narrative; edit selectively
• Advance agenda
• Achieve objective
• Proceed to next item on Progressive “wish list”
• If the truth ever comes out – ignore it

This is exactly how they handled the Matthew Shepard story. And the fact that “The Laramie Project,” a play based on the false motivation behind the tragedy, is still being regularly produced around the country, is proof that the truth wont’ be coming out any time soon.

One of the characters in the drama, a Baptist minister, sees fit to sermonize ~

“(T)here are people trying to distance themselves from this crime. And we need to own this crime. Everyone needs to own it.”

“Own it?” I don’t know about you but I don’t own it. I won’t own it. I’m not a druggie, nor am I gay. I don’t hate or harm those who are either of those things.
I do pray for their eternal souls. Which I believe is more than we can say for the mainstream media with their deceitful ways.

Hey Congress: It’s “not yours to give!”

Aren’t you tired of these arrogant politicians (who think it’s OK to exempt themselves from Obamacare) arguing over who gets to spend our money on what? Neither party gets it!

This runaway government is so far from what the founders envisioned they’d never recognize it. And how is it that so few voters understand that – when it comes to tax revenue – it’s not theirs to give!

Here’s a great story about a 19th century self-reliant farmer who had more civic awareness, personal integrity, and plain old-fashioned common sense than probably 90% of Americans today ~

In the first place, the government ought to have in the Treasury no more than enough for its legitimate purposes. But that has nothing with the question. The power of collecting and disbursing money at pleasure is the most dangerous power that can be entrusted to man […]

If you had the right to give anything, the amount was simply a matter of discretion with you, and you had as much right to give $20,000,000 as $20,000. If you have the right to give at all; and as the Constitution neither defines charity nor stipulates the amount, you are at liberty to give to any and everything which you may believe, or profess to believe, is a charity and to any amount you may think proper. You will very easily perceive what a wide door this would open for fraud and corruption and favoritism, on the one hand, and for robbing the people on the other. No, Colonel, Congress has no right to give charity.

The World’s War on Christendom – Latest Dispatch from the Front

The Obama administration is relentlessly pressing on with the fundamental transformation (i.e., destruction) of the United States military: 80 Christian Soldiers On One Air Force Base Threatened & Harassed For Refusing To Support Gay Marriage (from Todd Starnes at Fox News) ~

“There is an atmosphere of intimidation at Lackland Air Force Base,” said Steve Branson, the pastor of Village Parkway Baptist Church in San Antonio. “Gay commanders and officers are pushing their agenda on the airmen. There is a culture of fear in the military and it’s gone to a new level with the issue of homosexuality.”

Branson tells me at least 80 airmen attended a private meeting at the church where he heard them voice their concerns about religious hostilities at the Air Force base. It was a standing-room only crowd.

“The religious persecution is happening,” the pastor said. “It’s getting bigger every day. Gay and lesbian airmen can talk about their lifestyle, but the rest have to stay completely quiet about what they believe.”

Some specific examples:

• One airman was told that even thinking that homosexuality is a sin is discriminatory.
• The parent of a 19-year-old Christian airman said their son was directed to disclose his religion during Basic Training. “What’s your religion, little boy?” a master sergeant asked the young man. When he answered “Christian” he had to repeat Basic Training.
• One member of the military was written up for having his Bible out – while a Muslim was allowed to publicly display a prayer rug.
• A colonel told the pastor that officers are being ordered to publicly affirm and promote homosexuality.

Gen. Jerry Boykin (ret.) told me he’s not surprised to hear about the assault on religious liberty within the Armed Forces.

“It reinforces what we’ve been saying,” Boykin told me. “There is an orchestrated attack on Christians in the military and at this stage the Air Force is the worst.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How much longer will freedom of religion remain,
in the one nation on earth founded on that very freedom?
Tyrannical Administration Dumps on Vets
Update: 10-2-13
“Barrycades” ~ Obama barricades Lincoln Memorial unlike during 1995 “shutdown”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
President Obama is one heartless bastard. There, I said it.
I’m sure you’ll agree after hearing about this story (if you haven’t already).

First, the GOOD news:
WWII veterans storm D.C. memorial closed by government shutdown!

The WWII Veteran’s Memorial in Washington D.C. was one of those national park sites vindictively closed by the arrogant autocrats running the federal government, as “punishment” for the congressional impasse (blamed on Republicans of course) that’s temporarily shut down the government. Thank God, the men who sacrificed for their country all those years ago were still up to the challenge of defending freedom. In this case, their own freedom to visit their own memorial ~

Wheelchair-bound elderly veterans pushed aside barricades to tour the World War II Memorial Tuesday morning, in defiance of the government shutdown which closed all of the memorials in the nation’s capital.

The four bus loads of veterans — visiting from Mississippi as part of a once-in-a-lifetime Honor Flight tour — ignored National Park Police instructions not to enter the site as lawmakers and tourists cheered them on.

“We didn’t come this far not to get in,” one veteran proclaimed[…]

Several Republican lawmakers were on hand to greet the Mississippi Honor Flight veterans at the memorial on Tuesday and nodded thoughtfully as the greatest generation representatives voiced their displeasure at being turned away from their own memorial.

Organizers said the trip took months of planning and nearly $100,000 in donations for airfare, food and buses. A dozen more are scheduled in the next week.

“It’s great to be here, but it’s really disappointing that we can’t get closer to see it,” said Gene Tolley, a Marine Corps veteran who served in the Pacific during the war. “I came through the city back in high school, but I was looking forward to coming back and seeing this.”

He got his wish. 🙂

As Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, distracted a Park Police representative, other lawmakers and their staff helped topple the metal fences. A bagpiper on hand for the event led the men past the crowd and into the heart of the memorial, attracting a large, applauding crowd.

Read the whole story (at Stars and Stripes by Leo Shane III) HERE.

Here’s where the Tyrant-in-Chief comes into the story (from the Daily Caller, early this evening) ~
Obama admin. knew about WWII veterans’ request and rejected it

“We got the heads up that they will be barricaded and specifically asked for an exception for these heroes,” (Rep. Steven Palazzo MS-R) told TheDC. “We were denied and told, ‘It’s a government shutdown, what do you expect?’ when we contacted the liaison for the White House.”

Palazzo’s office was in touch with the heads of the National Park Service, the Department of the Interior and the Capitol Police. He says all these officials rejected his request to allow the veterans, many of whom are octogenarians and some of whom are in poor health, to attend.

Palazzo, a Gulf War Marine veteran who has participated in all five of the Honor Flights, blames the White House for making it harder on veterans and playing politics. “At first I thought it was a huge bureaucratic oversight,” Palazzo told The Daily Caller, “but having talked with the officials I can’t help but think this was politically motivated. Honor Flights, which bring WWII veterans to the nation’s memorials, are planned a year in advance and cost anywhere between $80,000 to $100,000. How low can you get with playing politics over our nation’s veterans?

In a statement, Palazzo noted that he is introducing legislation to ensure that all Honor Flights are granted access this week. “This is an open-air memorial that the public has 24/7 access to under normal circumstances — even when Park Service personnel aren’t present,” Palazzo said in the statement. “It actually requires more effort and expense to shut out these veterans from their Memorial than it would to simply let them through. My office has been in touch with NPS officials and the Administration to try to resolve this issue.”

I’m really at a loss for words here…
Barack Obama is simply a disgrace to the office of the president – and one miserable S.O.B..

Syria in Biblical Prophecy

A couple weeks ago Neil Cavuto had an interesting segment on his show concerning end-times prophecy and current events in Syria. He spoke with Joel Rosenberg who is the author of numerous fiction & non-fiction books focused primarily on the Middle East, most recently “Damascus Countdown” ~

Before blowing off biblical prophecy as irrelevant or mythical, understand that guys like Daniel, Isaiah, Jeremiah and the rest of those Old Testament dudes, wouldn’t have survived to prophesy about end-times had their contemporary predictions not been realized. The Lord Himself told His people how to authenticate a prophet; and how to deal with a phony ~

“But the prophet, who presumes to speak a word in My name,
which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in
the name of other gods, that prophet shall die. And if you say
in your heart, “How shall we know the word which the LORD hath
not spoken?” – when a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD,
if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing
which the LORD has not spoken, the prophet hath spoken it
presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.”

~ Deuteronomy 18:20-23 ~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Syria’s president, Bashar Assad, being a (Shia) Muslim, is probably not too concerned with biblical prophecy. But his coincidental sabre-rattling seems a bit ominous: Assad: We could blind Israel in an instant ~
“… the situation in Syria “has never been better,” as “we created chemical weapons in the ’80s as a deterrent against Israel’s nuclear arsenal. Today, it is no longer a weapon of deterrence.
We have weapons that are more important and more sophisticated to challenge Israel, which we can blind in an instant.”
Whatever else happens in Syria in the days and months ahead, it certainly looks like the “end-times” are closing in on Christians in that country:
Maaloula’s cathedral and churches empty of Christians as Syria’s latest front-line fight takes its toll
Syrian Christians may be pulled into intensifying war
Jihadist Rebels Are Burning Christian Statues And Crosses In Churches In Northern Syria
Christians are dying for us to help
Camp Bastion – Up-date: September 30, 2013
Up-date: Nov. 4th, 2013 ~
Further developments in the ongoing Camp Bastion investigation: 10 new details about the deadly attack on Camp Bastion (Military Times); previous fence breaches, unoccupied guard towers, limited security for Harriers (jets worth $200 million destroyed in the attack), etc..
The Atwell and Raible families deserve to learn the truth about this tragedy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Up-date: Sept. 30th, 2013 ~

First, I have to correct an error in my original post regarding the security forces at Camp Bastion at the time of the attack last September. I misread Michelle Malkin’s article and thought that Tonga was a local town or area of Afghanistan. Who knew that it was an island (poplulation 100,000) in the middle of the Pacific? And futher, who realized that they actually had a military presence? Since our feckless Commander-in-Chief has drastically reduced our troop numbers in Afghanistan we were forced to outsource security on the base to the vaunted Tongan Defence Force (notorious at the base for sleeping on the job). So while they weren’t locals – and potential jihadists – they weren’t anywhere close to being U.S. Marines.

Second, there’s been some resolution in the matter. As the Washington Post reported this evening: Two Marine generals (have been) fired for security lapses in Afghanistan ~

British commanders had assigned the task of manning the towers to troops from Tonga, which has sent 55 soldiers to Afghanistan.

On the night of the attack, the Tongans left unmanned the nearest watchtower to the point of the Taliban breach, according to an investigation by the U.S. Central Command.

Other aspects of the U.S.-British security plan were “sub-optimal,” the investigation found, with no single officer in charge of security for both Bastion and Leatherneck. The security arrangement created command-and-control relationships “contrary to the war-fighting principles of simplicity,” Amos wrote in a memo accepting the investigation.

Troop reductions also affected security measures. When Gurganus took command in 2011, about 17,000 U.S. troops were in his area of operations. By the time of the attack, in September 2012, the American contingent had dropped to 7,400 because of troop-withdrawal requirements imposed by President Obama.

In December 2011, 325 Marines were assigned to patrol the area around Bastion and Leatherneck. In the month before the attack, that number was cut to about 110.

Gurganus did seek permission in the summer of 2012 to add 160 troops to protect Bastion and Leatherneck, but his superiors in Kabul rejected the request because the military had reached a limit on forces set by the White House[…]

Gurganus and Sturdevant will be allowed to retire, but Amos said it will be up to Navy Secretary Ray Mabus to determine their final rank.

In the end, someone had to take the fall for Obama and the poltroons in the Pentagon.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Original post: June 23, 2013
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On September 14th, 2012 Camp Bastion, a British-run NATO compound in Afghanistan, was attacked by the Taliban, resulting in the deaths of two Marines and the worst lost of aircraft since Vietnam. Michelle Malkin deserves huge kudos for staying on top of the story as details have emerged over the last several months ~

… the Taliban waged an intricately coordinated, brutal attack on Camp Bastion in Afghanistan last fall — three days after the deadly siege on our consulate in Libya and after months of prior security incidents and warnings. Fifteen jihadists disguised in stolen American combat fatigues penetrated the complex. They used rocket-propelled grenades, assault rifles and other weapons to wipe out nearly an entire squadron of Marine Harrier jets worth an estimated $200 million.

Along with the most devastating loss of U.S. airpower since Vietnam, two heroic U.S. Marines — Lt. Col. Christopher Raible and Sgt. Bradley Atwell — were killed in the battle, and nearly a dozen others were injured.

Military officials refused to release details of the fateful budget and strategy decisions that led to the attack. But Deborah Hatheway, aunt of Sgt. Atwell and the family’s spokesperson, and other Camp Bastion families learned on their own that their loved ones were left vulnerable to attack by military leaders who outsourced watchtower security on the base to soldiers from Tonga.

Get that? In hostile territory we outsource security to the locals!

(Correction: “Tonga” isn’t “local.” See 9-30-13 update above)

“The attack only occurred because of an egregious failure in basic infantry practices. … It is painfully obvious that this attack would not have been successful, or likely even attempted, if not for multiple security failures at Leatherneck/Bastion.”

~ Nick Francona, former Marine Corps Ground Intelligence Officer ~

Apparently U.S. Central Command is investigating, especially the action or inaction of Maj. Gen. Charles “Mark” Gurganus who was ultimately responsible for base security at the time of the attack. And, as Malkin reports ~

…there is now movement on Capitol Hill to help Camp Bastion families whose information requests have been stymied. Rep. Todd Rokita, R-Ind., has written Marine/CENTCOM leadership on behalf of the victims’ families. (Sgt. Atwell and his family are from Indiana.) Rokita told me in a statement this week: “This is about transparency and accountability. I want to make sure that Sgt. Atwell’s family, Lt. Col. Raible’s family and the American people get the full truth about the Camp Bastion attack.”

At the time it occurred, news of this story was lost in the Benghazi smoke & mirrors show. Just one more tragic sideshow in the Obama Cirque du Destruction. But the families – and Americans who still give a damn – want answers.

Paul Ryan, M.I.A.

Update: 10-2-13

Oh gee – we found him!
He’s been busy working on amnesty! ~

While Americans are distracted once again by a government shut down and while they are valiantly fighting off Obama while he tries to force himself on America collectively with Obamacare, Paul Ryan has been quietly working away at passing Amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants.

Original post: 9-30-13

I have to confess to forgetting about Rep. Paul Ryan completely, until I ran across this headline the other day: Where Has Paul Ryan Been During the Latest Shutdown Debate?

Rep. Paul D. Ryan, the House Budget chairman and the GOP’s 2012 vice presidential candidate, has been a trusted, go-to source on budget and fiscal issues in the party for years. Yet the Wisconsin Republican has not, seemingly, been at the forefront of the most recent fight over a stopgap spending bill, nor has he been a loud voice on the debt limit.

Indeed. There’s certainly been no sign of THIS GUY since November 2012. What’s up with that?

According to Matt Fuller at Roll Call, many of Ryan’s fellow House Republicans weren’t even sure what he’d been doing ~

“It’s a legitimate question. I have no idea,” Rep. Rob Bishop of Utah said in response to a question about why Ryan hasn’t been more vocal.

“I don’t know that I can really answer that question,” said House Agriculture Chairman Frank D. Lucas of Oklahoma. “Maybe he’s got a lot of things going on. I just don’t know.”

A quick web search didn’t turn up much more on Ryan, although he has gotten some coverage in his local Milwaukee papers.

He definitely wasn’t supportive of Ted Cruz and Mike Lee’s effort to defund Obamacare ~

“We are trying to make a case to the guys in the Senate and White House that it is not in their interest to roll out a law that is not ready to be rolled out. So let’s delay this thing,” the Janesville Republican said in a speech to the Waukesha County Business Alliance (on September 13th).

Those people who want Republicans in the House to defund Obamacare or shut down the government don’t understand how federal funding works, Ryan explained. If the federal government were shut down, Obamacare would continue to operate because it is an entitlement program just like Social Security and Medicare, he said.

Hmmmm….
So other than siding with the RINOs, it seems he’s been pretty busy working on – well… himself: Paul Ryan cashes in on White House run ~

U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan may have lost his bid to become vice president. But the Janesville Republican has hit the political jackpot.

New records show Ryan has raised $1.7million in the first six months of the year, putting him on pace to blow past his old fundraising records.

Yep. Sadly, for all that initial promise, Paul Ryan has turned out to be just another self-interested politician (keep your head down and your coffers full). One more French Republican.

Feast of St. Michael & All Angels

September 29th is the day on the Church calendar that the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels is celebrated. Because angels are mentioned numerous times in scripture, Christian belief in them crosses all denominational lines. Created by God, we consider them to be His agents – acting on His behalf, at His direction.

Today’s sermon from St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Bonne Terre, Missouri discusses the various roles of angels ~

Messengers
Throughout the Bible God sent angels to deliver messages to man, particularly at critical moments in God’s dealings with mankind.

Worshipers
Choirs of angels sang God’s praises the night our Savior was born They’re mentioned again in Isaiah and the book of Revelation doing the same thing.

Warriors

Now this may disturb our image of angels as being rather soft, even effeminate, creatures, or else as cute little cherubs with rosy cheeks. No, those are not biblical ways of looking at angels. In the Bible, when angels are described, they can be fiery and frightening. Rather than “Touched by an Angel,” more likely would be “Torched by an Angel.” When angels appear to human beings, they startle and scare the people, so much so, that the angels invariably have to say, “Fear not,” “Do not be afraid.”

Which brings us to St. Michael. He’s the guy who does battle for us so that the old evil foe, the devil, does not have any power over us.

(Actually, that’s a statue of the archangel himself in the lower left of this web-page, “guarding” my blog 🙂 )

The sermon elaborates ~

Michael the Archangel, as God’s appointed agent, acting with his authority, is one who is like God in his might. He is the one whom God uses to throw down Satan from his power over humanity.

Now we need to ask: How can Michael do this? On what basis? And here is where the gospel in all of this comes in. The reason Michael can defeat the devil in battle is because Christ has defeated him on the cross.

Today’s festival celebrates St. Michael and All Angels because they ~

… glorify the person and work of Christ and carry out the victory He has won for us. Jesus Christ, the very Son of God, has defeated the devil and all evil, and therefore (they) can act to throw down Satan and guard and protect the church[…]

The message from Michael today is this: We win. We Christians win the final victory because Jesus has redeemed us from all sin, from death, and from the power of the devil.

Be of good cheer. We know Who wins in the end!

Prayer to St. Michael
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection
against the malice and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we
humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the
power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander
through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.
