Meanwhile, in another part of the world…

We haven’t heard much about Venezuela since President Obama’s pal Hugo Chavez left the building two years ago. But unfortunately for the citizens of that country, the dearth of news coverage doesn’t mean that all is well in the Marxist paradise. In fact things are downright awful; the economy is pretty much imploding – Venezuela rations food as oil crisis starts to bite ~

venezuela-foodrationing

Venezuelans already have to queue for hours every day
to buy basics such as milk and flour.
And people who photograph the long lines and empty shelves are sent to jail.

Things were already deteriorating rapidly last spring, mostly thanks to the state taking over large segments of the private sector, muzzling free speech and stifling dissent. Now, pushed by the rapid world-wide drop in oil prices, the nation is teetering on the edge of bankruptcy.

As Business Insider reports, according to UBS (a Swiss global financial services company) ~

… the country has an 82% chance of collapsing within a year. Venezuela will no longer be able to make payments to foreign investors without oil revenue at its historic levels.

It’s hard to fathom how things have gotten so bad in such a an oil-rich nation…

Venezuela has the world’s largest oil reserves. But it produces mostly thick, heavy crude that has to be mixed with lighter oil to make it usable. Problem is, Venezuela’s seriously mismanaged state-run oil industry isn’t pumping enough light crude […]

“You’ve got a country that has more oil than Saudi Arabia. And Saudi Arabia can easily produce 11 million barrels a day. Venezuela can’t even produce 3 million barrels a day.”

Last fall they actually had to start importing foreign oil (!) – two million barrels from Algeria. (Even worse, Qatar is now cozying up to the South American country, loaning them billions to prop up the economy: Venezuela: Qatar gives a band-aid. That can’t end well.)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Beleaguered Venezuelans have Chavez and his communist cronies to thank for crushing the middle class and for the destruction of what used to be a fairly stable economy.
And while we certainly sympathize with their plight, we should also be grateful for the clear object lesson Venezuela’s downfall represents. Since the transformation occurred so quickly, it’s not difficult to identify the direct cause for the disastrous effect (- as well as the ominous parallels in our own country…).
In fact, just this past week, a group of Catholic bishops was valiantly trying to let the rest of the world know what happens when a Marxist dictator takes over a country ~
Venezuela’s Bishops Have A Message For Pope Francis on Communism~
In a refreshingly powerful and direct statement, Venezuela’s bishops Monday blamed “Marxist socialism” and “communism” by name for the horrors and chaos gripping their country, according to a story in El Universal.
venezuela-bishopsThe bishops said the long lines of people trying to buy food and other basic necessities and the constant rise in prices are the result of the government’s decision to “impose a political-economic system of socialist, Marxist or communist,” which is “totalitarian and centralist” and “undermines the freedom and rights of individuals and associations.”
The Venezuelan bishops specifically stated that the private sector was critical for the well being of the country. The document, read by Monsignor Diego Padron in Spanish, said the country needs “a new entrepreneurial spirit with audacity and creativity.”
So not only did these bishops diagnose the cause of the misery correctly; they also warned that communism harms the poor most of all.
Let’s hope the pope – and other well-intentioned but misguided social-justice types – pay attention to the bishops’ message about the sad state of their country. Free-market capitalism may not be perfect, but marxism-socialism-communism is infinitely worse, especially for the poor and needy.
Another movie the Oscar Academy will snub
OK, I haven’t seen any of the movies up for an Oscar (the good ones we can catch on the small screen, the bad ones are just more porcine fodder), but here’s a new documentary that definitely looks worthwhile: Patterns of Evidence.
Is the Bible fact or fiction? Do scripture and archaeology actually intersect? In Patterns of Evidence filmmaker Tim Mahoney investigates the physical proof for various Old Testament narratives ~
The movie debuts at theaters countrywide for just one night, tomorrow January 19th, at 7:00 p.m. local time. Tickets can be pre-purchased HERE.
Snub Hollywood. Go see this film! 😀
Saturday Shorts – 1-17-15
sshorts1-28-12
Random links of interest, concern or curiosity from the past week or so, that deserve at least a SHORT mention:
Ten Common Core Promoters Laughing All The Way To The Bank ~ Follow the money… (disappointing to see Former Education Secretary Bill Bennett on the list)
… the evidence suggests Common Core will spectacularly fail children and society. Shouldn’t people earn money only for demonstrated success, instead of promised success? In a free market, they would.
Cultural psychology: How Islam managed to stay medieval for 1,400 years ~ Interesting (and politically incorrect) analysis of the religion-of-pertpetual-outrage from a psychologist, Nicolai Sennels ~
While non-Muslim scientists invent new fantastic medicines and technologies daily; discover the most amazing things about the universe, its building blocks and inhabitants; and Western voters and politicians have created the most humane, rich and free societies in world history – most Islamic countries are still amputating limbs for theft; stoning women and homosexuals; heavily inbred; denying people free speech and democracy; and contributing absolutely nothing when it comes to science, human rights or peace.
Gorbachev warns of major war in Europe over Ukraine ~ Alarmist? The former Soviet leader says tensions between Russia and Western alliances over Ukraine and Crimea actually have the potential to go nuclear. 😯
9 of 10 Worst Countries for Persecution of Christians Have 50% or Greater Muslim Populations ~ According to Open Doors International, the only nation worse than a Muslim one is that hellhole of North Korea.
Neuroscience has proved that porn is literally making men’s brains more childish. Seriously. ~ No wonder the majority of new films, games and TV shows seem created for – and by – hormonal, adolescent males ~
… (those) indulging pornographic media and other forms of commercial sex are hardly befitting of the adjective “adult.”
Is the White House a ‘Sleeper Cell’? ~ Hmmm… Roger L Simon at P.J.Media is only being partially facetious.
The people who shut down traffic in Boston for hours yesterday (Thursday) ~ … are pathetically deluded. They embrace an evil ideology predicated on radical distortions of history, aimed at undermining free-market capitalism and ultimately destroying the civil society. (Not surprising that much of the funding for their anarchist activities comes courtesy of George $oros.)
Up-date 1-18-15: And a bunch of them are spoiled rich kids living with mommy & daddy.
What Not Even the King of England Could Do ~ A federal researcher points out George III couldn’t suspend laws — as many say Obama just did. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) is one of the few U.S. senators condemning the president’s unconstitutional suspension of immigration laws.
Sessions wrote a 23 page “Immigration Handbook” which he distributed to his fellow GOP senators on Monday, Jan. 12th. In the publication, subtitled “for the New Republican Majority,” he reminds the legislators that Congress’ first priority should be their constituents – American citizens – not illegal immigrants.
Incest: The next frontier in ‘reproductive freedom’ ~ Just the latest signpost down the steep slippery slope of sexual perversion ~
Like a plastic Piggly Wiggly bag fluttering about in the alley, those untethered from God’s natural law are violently tossed to and fro by the gusting winds of moral relativism.
Paving the Road to Hell with the Law of Unintended Consequences
Here’s Bill Whittle with another solid dose of reality; explaining how the Left’s feel-good, “social justice” policies are always detrimental to the economy, the social fabric, and ultimately to civilization itself. Sad but true…
Will Europeans finally wake up and vanquish “Eurabia”?
In the wake of last week’s Jihadist violence in France, will the Netherlands – and the rest of Europe – at last listen to Geert Wilders and put an end to “Islamization” on that continent?
Wilders, a member of the Dutch Parliament and leader of the Party for Freedom, (FrontPage Mag publishes his occasional columns) has been tirelessly defending Western values and pointing out the failure of multiculturalism for years. His courageous opposition to the Muslim “invasion” of Europe has garnered legal persecution, as well as multiple death threats (from of course, the Religion-of-Peace); forcing him to live with 24/7 security.
Wilders spoke to Parliament earlier this week…
“Never say that you were not warned!”
Video via Gates of Vienna which also posted a full transcript of Wilders’ speech
Rotterdam’s mayor tells Muslims to pack their bags and go if they don’t like freedom ~ Wow. At least one Dutch Muslim seems to agree with Wilders ~
“It is incomprehensible that you can turn against freedom. But if you do not like freedom, in Heaven’s name pack your bag and leave,” he said.
“There may be a place in the world where you can be yourself,” he continued. “Be honest with yourself and do not go and kill innocent journalists. And if you do not like it here because humorists you do not like make a newspaper, may I then say you can —- off.”
~ Ahmed Aboutaleb, Labour politician & former government minister
[Uh-oh. I wouldn’t be surprised if this guy was currently arranging for round-the-clock security himself…]
Jimmy Carter’s Islamic delusions
carter-obama
Good grief! Now the second-worst president ever, is not only defending the worst one ever for not going to Paris for the solidarity march, he’s essentially blaming Israel for instigating the Charlie Hebdo murderers ~
In the wake of the Islamist terror attacks in France against cartoonists and Jews, former President Jimmy Carter’s first reaction was to pin the motivation for such terrorism on Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians. 😯
If Jimmy keeps this up, even the progressive mainstream media may start to question the man’s mental fitness ~
Carter didn’t explain how solving the Israeli-Palestinian issue would in any way resolve the violent conflicts currently engulfing the Arab world, including the Syrian civil war, the Islamic State’s takeover of part of Iraq and its brutal implementation of Islamic law, and the conflict between the Egyptian government and the Muslim Brotherhood, just to name a few.
Nor did he detail how the “Palestinian problem” helps explain why three French Muslims murdered innocent French Jews buying groceries for the coming Sabbath and cartoonists preparing the next issue of their paper.
I’ll bet Carter would blame the Israelis for this vicious anti-Semitism as well
Palestinian Students Make Outrageous Short Film Glorifying Stabbing and Shooting Jews.
Adding insult to insanity – the students actually produced the film at Al-Quds University in Jerusalem! (Hello Israelis! Do you have a death wish?!) ~
Jerusalem Post Arab Affairs correspondent Khaled Abu-Toameh reported that Hamas-aligned students at the college were behind the production, which featured a Jewish “settler” and a “rabbi” – played by students – facing the ultimate punishment for what was characterized as occupying Palestinian land […]
“The Palestinian Authority has been openly promoting murder by glorifying terrorists and has been paying salaries to terrorists for years and the West ignores it – and worse continues funding the Palestinian Authority and treating them like an acceptable government,” Itamar Marcus, director of Palestinian Media Watch, which monitors Palestinian media and societal trends, told TheBlaze.
While these Muslim students are more than happy to abuse the freedom of speech afforded them in Jerusalem, the Religion-of-Perpetual-Outrage – as the rabid Imam Anjem Choudary so helpfully points out – doesn’t actually believe in freedom of expression ~
ImamChoudary-smlr
Further, in an interview with Ben Shapiro of Truth Revolt ~
Choudary explained that Muslim scripture made clear that those who insult the Prophet, like journalists at Charlie Hebdo, must be punished: “Those who would insult the Prophet, kill them.” Sharia Law he said, clearly requires any who would insult those Muslims deem “prophets,” including Moses and Jesus, be tried in court and punished. This a system, he added, that Muslims are willing to “fight for and even die for.”
The British imam also had some candidly harsh criticism for the president ~
President Obama, Choudary said, is “lying” about Islam, along with other Western leaders. The Koran itself shows that “Barack Obama is a liar” about the religion’s true nature:
Choudary: Islam for them is whatever they think Islam is in terms of their own interests. Islam is in accordance to the Koran, of the sayings and actions of the Prophet. That’s it. […] I say to you, look at the Koran, look at the sayings of the Prophet, and check for yourself. Is Barack Obama a liar or am I lying? I think that you will find that he’s a liar. He’s only inventing Islam according to what his own foreign policy is.
When it comes to Islam, and the nefarious goals of its adherents, Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama are either deliberately deceiving themselves, or worse – they’re maliciously lying to us – and intentionally undermining America’s safety.
Saturday Shorts – 1-10-15
sshorts1-21-12
Random links of interest, concern or curiosity from the past week or so, that deserve at least a SHORT mention:
Why Free Community College Is Anything But Free ~ Pretty darn “audacious” that a man who never actually earned a dime in his life is so magnanimous with our money.
Obama Encourages Poor Work Ethic with ‘Depend on Government’ Attitude ~ Excellent article from Charlie Daniels; we need more personal responsibility – not more government handouts.
What pit bull activism says about our culture ~ Hint: nothing good. Why are the savage statistics about this breed being ingnored? ~
This is the first time in the history of human-animal relations that a movement has formed, not to promote the well-known virtues of a beloved breed, but to promote denial of a beloved breed’s well-known vices.
Cantor: GOP focus on ObamaCare would be ‘disservice’ ~
Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said Monday that a GOP focus on highly politicized issues like ObamaCare and immigration in 2015 would be a “disservice to the American people.”
Cantor, who fell from power this summer after a shocking primary defeat, said Republicans needed to stop playing politics and instead focus on growing the economy if they wanted to keep the White House within reach in 2016.
Hey Eric: There’s a reason you’re the former House Majority Leader. Thank-you for your service. Now please just go away.
(Cantor) urged Republicans to act quickly on bipartisan policy initiatives like expanding charter schools, signing new trade deals or creating a permanent research and development tax credit. If they don’t, he warned the next race for the White House could be at stake.
And if they listen to you – the entire country is at stake!
N.Y. Mayor de Blasio Active Supporter of Brutal Communist Regime ~ Considering de Blasio’s past, his nasty totalitarian tendencies really come as no surprise ~
De Blasio was an active supporter of the communist Sandinista regime in Nicaragua in the 1980s. He was so enamored with Soviet-backed revolutionaries that he traveled to the capital city of the war-torn country, Managua, to aid their cause by participating in a relief mission. Upon de Blasio’s return to the United States, he joined the Nicaragua Solidarity Network of Greater New York (NSN).
Tribe’s Opinion That ‘EPA’s Clean Power Plan Is Unconstitutional’ Means More Than You Think ~ Ron Arnold recounts a very interesting episode from Obama’s years at Harvard Law School.
And speaking of Harvard ~
Harvard Faculty Revolts Over Obamacare Cost Increases ~ Waaaaaahh!
Harvard faculty members are apoplectic over changes to their university-provided health-care plans related to Obamacare — after Harvard researchers spent years promoting the Affordable Care Act.
Poetic justice.
That nagging question about Obama’s allegiance: warnings about ISIS rise were ignored ~ Allen West believes Obama’s actions tell us a whole lot more than his rhetoric ~
In the last year or so, we’ve seen our military might decimated by budget cuts, pink slips sent to troops while they’re on the battlefield and scores of generals fired, while military leadership deals with how best to integrate LGBT troops, makes sure no one is offended by nativity scenes in the chow hall, and worries about beards. In the meantime, the radical Islamists of ISIS make millions in oil dollars, slaughter, rape and pillage, and grow ever stronger…
Boehner Vows to Fight ‘Tooth and Nail’ Against Executive Amnesty He Funded ~ More deceitful demagoguery ~
“I said we’d fight it tooth and nail when we had two majorities in the House and Senate and I meant it,” Boehner said. “What is at risk is the rule of law and the sanctity of America’s Constitution. The president has taken action that is beyond the scope of his ability and the Congress cannot just sit here and look the other way. We have to take action.” 😯
I guess since crying doesn’t help, we may as well laugh.
Historical ignorance: hazardous to the civil society
We know that facts don’t much matter to the Ferguson race hustlers. But if their merry mobs of malcontents had, at some point in their education, acquired a more comprehensive knowledge of history, they may not be so easily duped into following the likes of Reverend Al, so easily swayed by that destructive, divisive rhetoric.
Perhaps, as Larry Elder points out in this recent article at Human Events, if they had learned about accomplished Americans like Booker T. Washington, they wouldn’t be so quick to jump on the “Hands-Up-Don’t-Shoot” bandwagon ~
Booker T. Washington was born a slave. In his autobiography, “Up From Slavery,” written in 1901 — just a mere 36 years after the Civil War — Washington wrote:
BookerTWashington“As a rule, not only did the members of my race entertain no feelings of bitterness against the whites before and during the war, but there are many instances of Negroes tenderly caring for their former masters and mistresses who for some reason have become poor and dependent since the war. I know of instances where the former masters of slaves have for years been supplied with money by their former slaves to keep them from suffering. … One sends him a little coffee or sugar, another a little meat, and so on. Nothing that the coloured people possess is too good for the son of ‘old Mars’ Tom,’ who will perhaps never be permitted to suffer while any remain on the place who knew directly or indirectly of ‘old Mars’ Tom.’…
“From some things that I have said one may get the idea that some of the slaves did not want freedom. This is not true. I have never seen one who did not want to be free, or one who would return to slavery.
“I pity from the bottom of my heart any nation or body of people that is so unfortunate as to get entangled in the net of slavery. I have long since ceased to cherish any spirit of bitterness against the Southern white people on account of the enslavement of my race. No one section of our country was wholly responsible for its introduction, and, besides, it was recognized and protected for years by the General Government. Having once got its tentacles fastened on to the economic and social life of the Republic, it was no easy matter for the country to relieve itself of the institution. Then, when we rid ourselves of prejudice, or racial feeling, and look facts in the face, we must acknowledge that, notwithstanding the cruelty and moral wrong of slavery, the ten million Negroes inhabiting this country, who themselves or whose ancestors went through the school of American slavery, are in a stronger and more hopeful condition, materially, intellectually, morally, and religiously, than is true of an equal number of black people in any other portion of the globe. …
“This I say, not to justify slavery — on the other hand, I condemn it as an institution, as we all know that in America it was established for selfish and financial reasons, and not from a missionary motive — but to call attention to a fact, and to show how Providence so often uses men and institutions to accomplish a purpose.”
America, her history, and her people are far from perfect. But by focusing on isolated incidents of racism, pretending they’re the rule and not exceptions, and distorting the truth, professional antagonists like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have elevated grievance-mongering to an art form. And to what end?
Dwelling on the flaws, picking at old wounds, ignoring all the good this country has done and the difficulties we’ve overcome… is tearing the country apart. A national tragedy, based on falsehoods – and ignorance.
#JeSuisCharlie
#JeSuisCharlie (I am Charlie) is one of the hashtag messages trending on Twitter today; a spontaneous show of solidarity for the murdered French journalists, and for freedom of speech.
JeSuisCharlie
Today’s massacre (12 dead) in Paris at the offices of weekly satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, wasn’t the first time the publication has felt the wrath of Islamic barbarians. Their building was vandalized just over three years ago ~ Firebombed by Intolerance.
In that November 2011 attack, a single Molotov cocktail was tossed through a window around 1:00 in the morning. Since the offices were closed at the time, no one was injured, although there was significant property damage.
The magazine was not intimidated. At the time, Charlie Hedbo’s editor-in-chief, known as Charb said ~
“We cannot, today, put together a paper. But we will do everything possible to do one next week. Whatever happens, we’ll do it. There is no question of giving in.”
Video via the UK Telegraph
This was the issue that got the Religion-of-Perpetual-Outrage all worked up four years ago ~
“100 lashes if you are not dying of laughter.”
An editorial, the first following the firebombing, included this quote about Islam ~
“No religion is compatible with democracy from the moment a political party representing it wants to take power in the name of God”.
Whatever their publishing style may have been, these brave journalists stood up to the cowardly Islamic bullies, and ultimately – died for freedom of speech. We in the West should not let those deaths be in vain.
House of NO Representatives
What a travesty!
boehner&Pelosi
Just a few days ago, a poll from Caddell Associates indicated that ~ Republican Voters Overwhelmingly Want Members to Remove Boehner as Speaker ~
A whopping 60 percent of voters who voted for Republicans in the last election either definitely or probably want their member of Congress to elect someone other than Boehner on Jan. 6, when Congress convenes, according to the poll. The voters were asked: “As you may know the new Congress will select its leaders in January. If it were up to you, would you elect John Boehner to continue as Speaker of the House or would you elect someone new?”
In response to that question, 34 percent of the GOP voters surveyed said they definitely want someone other than Boehner and 26 percent said they probably want someone other than Boehner. Only 11 percent said they definitely want to keep Boehner and an additional 15 percent said they probably want Boehner to stay. So the poll says some 60 percent of GOP voters want Boehner gone, while just 25 percent want him to stay. Fifteen percent in the poll either don’t know, or are undecided on Boehner’s future.
Is politics-as-usual what the House thought the November election was about?!
No, these self-serving elitists aren’t that stupid. They know what their constituents want. They just don’t give a damn.
