Will Zimmerman ever get justice?

Now that more and more facts about the death of Trayvon Martin are coming to light in the George Zimmerman trial it’s becoming clear that the racially-motivated lynch mob who were calling for his head may have jumped the gun a bit, so to speak.

This is from Jennifer Rubin at the Washington Post: Could the mob have been wrong on Trayvon Martin? Rubin cites the opinion of prominent defense attorney Alan Dershowitz who concludes that under the “beyond the reasonable doubt” standard, Corey doesn’t have the grounds for a conviction. ~

The evidence now seems entirely inconsistent with a murder charge. “Now there is much more extensive medical evidence that would tend to support Zimmerman’s version of events. This version, if true, would establish self-defense even if Zimmerman had improperly followed, harassed and provoked Martin. . . . Thus, if Zimmerman verbally provoked Martin, but Martin then got on top of Zimmerman and banged his head into the ground, broke his nose, bloodied his eyes and persisted in attacking Zimmerman — and if Zimmerman couldn’t protect himself from further attack except by shooting Martin — he would have the right to do that [under Florida law].”

His continued prosecution looks more and more like mob justice, cheered on by hecklers in the media who didn’t much care to find out the facts before rallying the public to equate failure to charge Zimmerman with racism. Will they urge that “real” justice be done, that the rule of law be upheld if the evidence undermines their premature conclusions about a case in which they had a tiny portion of the facts on which to holler for Zimmerman’s prosecution?

Not a chance.

Additionally, contrary to the could-have-been-Obama’s-son choirboy image of Trayvon that was being foisted on the public, Martin was probably far from it.

In the meantime, it’s pretty clear that Zimmerman’s father was right – thanks to the ignorant, angry mob; “Our lives will never be the same.” From the Miami Herald:

Robert Zimmerman is a retired magistrate living like a fugitive.

He stays in hotels under assumed names. He pays cash so no one will look at his surname and make the connection: This is the father of one of the nation’s most controversial murder defendants.

“It’s been unimaginable,” he said Monday. “Our lives will never be the same.”

Rubin’s article concludes with this:

If Zimmerman’s actions turn out to have been legally defensible, where does he go for justice, and who exactly will demand (prosecutor) Corey be held accountable for jumping when the mob howled? Well, don’t expect the mob to do it. It has moved on. It always does.

Hope the mob is happy with the destruction they’ve wrought in the lives of the Zimmerman family. Just a sad tale of contemporary American society all around.
