By their causes you shall know them

I wanted to share a couple pictures of interesting displays I recently noticed in front of two local faith communities. The visual contrast is as striking as that between the two worldviews on exhibit.

The first, at a Catholic church, was unmistakably pro-life, featuring dozens of small white crosses in straight, solemn rows, representing babies lost through abortion. The message: All Life is Sacred ~

Two miles down the road, the Birmingham Temple Congregation for Humanistic Judaism is declaring “solidarity with immigrants and refugees.” They’re doing this by tying small stuffed toys onto a bunch of wooden sticks. The overall effect is cluttered, chaotic and rather disconcerting, reminiscent of those roadside memorials for auto fatalities ~

More to the point, only one of these religious organizations appears to be concerned with God’s opinion on these matters.

First of all, I don’t recall “separated children” being an issue during the last president’s tenure – even though the detention centers for housing minors were the brainchild of the Obama administration. I sure didn’t see any toys-on-sticks at this location four years ago.

That said, these kids are being detained as a direct result of their parents’ ill-advised decisions to sneak them into the country illegally. God is compassionate – but He doesn’t want us to facilitate consequence-free living.

Furthermore, while the Lord calls us to be charitable and care for the needs of the true refugee – those fleeing life-threatening persecution – we should do so in a manner that doesn’t encourage further violation of our immigration laws. Our first response should be to help improve conditions in their native countries. And our first concern should be for their eternal souls.

While the temple folks are worried about the thousands of separated immigrant children, are they equally concerned with the sanctity of each and every life born and unborn? Aborted lives number in the 100’s of thousands. In fact, LifeNews.com reports that nearly 25% of annual deaths in the U.S. are due to abortion ~

(T)he widely accepted estimate is that there are 920,000 medical and surgical abortions in the United States each year. Each of these abortions kills an innocent human being […]

Shoot innocent people in schools, theaters, or on the streets and the Hollywood elite react with swift calls for “justice” and the banning of guns. Kill innocent human beings by abortion and not only do the Hollywood elite not care, but they are quick to shower gifts of money on the organization that does more of the killing than any other organization or individual.

Ultimately, the “humanistic” designation really tells you all you need to know about the Birmingham Temple Congregation. They’ve pretty much evolved beyond the belief in a Higher Authority; we humans know better than God, and act accordingly.

“I call heaven and earth to record this day against you,
that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing:
therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live;”
