Aretha’s pastor under fire for preaching God’s word

One of the few voices of sanity heard during the Aretha Franklin marathon funeral service last week was that of Pastor Jasper Williams. Unfortunately, he wasn’t a fan favorite. As we all know by now, traditional, old-fashioned values just don’t play well with today’s celebrity culture. Although Franklin had specifically requested that Williams deliver her eulogy, his remarks received – by far – the most criticism from our tolerant friends on the progressive left.

What was it that so offended them? Apparently the same thing he’s been saying for decades, along with men like Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, Ben Carson and Burgess Owens. In a nutshell: the Truth.

Here’s a brief description of the pastor’s sermon from Dr. Michael Brown ~

Pastor Williams spoke fearlessly and boldly, even speaking of “sin in the black community including black people killing black people, men not being in the home to help women raise the children, a lack of traditional, biblical marriage between a man and a woman … a lack of unity, and loss of economic power.

“Declaring that black America had lost its soul, he said, ‘Now is time for black America to come back home.’”

He even stated that, in a matter of months, blacks kill more blacks than whites killed blacks during the whole era of the Ku Klux Klan.

Standing by his original remarks, Pastor Williams graciously responded to the backlash in this press conference ~

Definitely worthwhile listening (although you can’t hear any of the questions being asked). William’s matter-of-fact conviction in God’s truth is reassuring.

The pastor’s key points were:

• Black lives will matter when blacks R.E.S.P.E.C.T. black lives.
• The devastation in black communities is in large part due to rejecting God and his values; a big part of the problem is broken families, and too many single moms trying to raise boys on their own.
• Solving the problems isn’t about getting more money. “We have to help ourselves; we can’t look to others to solve our problems.”

Words of timeless wisdom. Hopefully there were some in his audience last week for whom his message will ring true, and who will be motivated to help effect real hope and change in their communities.
