Latest success with adult stem cells; restoring sight to the blind

According to a recent UK Telegraph article there’s been an amazing breakthrough in adult stem cell research – Cure for cataracts: scientists use stem cells to grow ‘living lens’ in eye.

adultstemcells2As I mentioned back in November, Michael Cook at MercatorNet unofficially declared a quiet end to the stem cell wars ~

Foes of embryo research were called troglodytes and religious fundamentalists; they were frauds waging war on genuine science. Their scientific credentials were questioned. They were accused of being callous and indifferent to the suffering of patients with chronic illness.

And yet they were right. Not one person has been cured with embryonic stem cells. Not one.

With adult stem cells on the other hand… it’s been one wonderful discovery after another. Like curing blindness ~

Cataracts can be cured by using a patient’s own stem cells to regrow a ‘living lens’ in their eye, restoring sight in just three months, scientists have shown.

In research described as ‘remarkable,’ surgeons reversed blindness in 12 infants born with congenital cataracts by removing the damaged lens and coaxing nearby cells to repair the damage.

It could pave the way for millions of older people in Britain having their sight restored using their own cells.[…]

Dr Kang Zhang, chief of Ophthalmic Genetics and founding director of the Institute for Genomic Medicine at UC San Diego, speaks to the promising future that his research portends for further advances ~

“An ultimate goal of stem cell research is to turn on the regenerative potential of one’s own stem cells for tissue and organ repair and disease therapy,” said Dr Kang Zhang […]

“The success of this work represents a new approach in how new human tissue or organ can be regenerated and human disease can be treated, and may have a broad impact on regenerative therapies by harnessing the regenerative power of our own body.

“We believe that our new approach will result in a paradigm shift in cataract surgery and may offer patients a safer and better treatment option in the future.”

Not only does this exciting discovery highlight yet again the superiority of adult vs. embryonic stem cells, it points to the genius of a creator who designed a self-contained healing mechanism into human beings at a cellular level.

Don’t we have an awesome God?!
