Post Constitutional Morality

“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

~ John Adams

Among the timeless wisdom that the founders passed on to their prosperity (us :) ), one of the truest statements was the one above, penned by John Adams. It was included in a letter he wrote in 1798 while president, to the First Brigade of the Third Division of the Militia of Massacusetts.

Right before that sentence, he wrote this; “Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net,” which further stressed his belief – informed by his long study, and thorough understanding of human nature – that our Republic wouldn’t hold without a firm moral foundation.

In the midst of this heated 2016 presidential primary season, it seems that most voters are willing to completely disregard Adams’s observations. Many of those who consider themselves “conservative” – Christian even – apparently believe that these old-fashioned notions or virtue and morality no longer matter.

So be it…

Benjamin Rush once asked Adams whether he thought the American struggle would succeed. His response;
“Yes, if we fear God and repent our sins.”
