Progressive Plundering

Want to understand how Detroit went from “boom town” to “busted?” Check out this story: Food Stamp Glitch Leaves Walmart Shelves Bare: ‘Like a Tornado Had Came Through’

Shelves at two Louisiana Walmart stores were emptied during a shopping frenzy last weekend, after a glitch in the Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) system allowed government food stamp recipients to make unlimited purchases.

The help-yourself spree lasted about two hours. When the EBT system came back on-line, card-holders left, simply abandoning the over-flowing shopping carts.

So where’s the similarity with Motown? Well, compress five decades of moral decline and government-enabled raiding, into two hours of “free stuff” in a Louisiana Walmart and you get essentially the same result:

Property that someone else built, produced and/or paid for gets looted, trashed and abandoned by an entitled, redistributionist mob.

Detroit and those two Walmart stores were both sacked. One event took much longer that the other, but each contained the essential ingredients for boundless plundering:

• “free” stuff;
• herd mentality;
• no restraints – either internal (conscience, self-control) or external (lawful authorities)

Intentionally or not – this is exactly the type of behavior that progressive policies produce.

In her column yesterday, Star Parker explained how the current government shutdown and fiscal showdown reflect a decaying morality; Budget crisis has its roots in erosion of values. And of course the Left has been encouraging bad values for decades.

We all agree that we want to get as many people out of poverty as possible.

The evidence abounds that a lifestyle that reflects personal responsibility and traditional values — like traditional sexual attitudes and marriage and family — reduces dramatically chances that an individual will wind up in poverty.

I hope people live according to these values. But if they don’t want to, that’s their business.

But those on the left don’t think so. They want to foster a culture that says do what you want. They think to promote traditional values in schools and popular culture is inappropriate and small-minded and at times even unconstitutional.

Then they say it is only fair that everyone pay the costs of the mess this culture of moral relativism makes.

Which brings us to: Food stamp shopping spree: Who pays?

“These businesses are only reimbursed for the benefits on the card, and they are completely responsible. So if someone had $50 dollars on their card, and they spent $100, the retailer, in this case Walmart future Walmart shoppers (because the company has to make up the money somehow), will (ulitmately) be on the hook for the other $50.

As with Walmart, Detroit, and every other ruin caused by misguided, mismanaged and ultimately immoral Leftist policies, it’s always the law-abiding, taxpaying citizens covering the cost of their miserable failures. They should just call us the “Sucker Class.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Walmart shopper – arriving at one of the stores after the EBT spree – was taken aback by the selfish plundering, but opined that it was a natural human reaction.
He might be right. If so, we’re definitely devolving as a species.
We used to aspire to higher things, back when we tried to follow the ten commandments.
