Dems’ duplicity on full display in Gorsuch opposition

Judge Neil Gorsuch, Donald Trump’s nominee to the the United States Supreme Court, is an excellent choice to succeed Antonin Scalia. Like the late justice, his approach to the Constitution is wonderfully constitutional, as he affirmed in his remarks Tuesday evening ~

“It is for Congress, not the courts to write new laws,” Gorsuch said. “A judge who likes every outcome he reaches is very likely a bad judge, stretching for results he prefers rather than those the law demands.”

Source: Washington Free Beacon

GorsuchNomination
Judge Gorsuch began his career clerking for Supreme Court Justices Byron White and Anthony Kennedy. Later, he was a high-ranking official in the George W. Bush Justice Department. And he was apparently so well-respected ten years ago that he was unanimously confirmed to his current position as an appellate judge with the 10th Circuit in Denver. Why even the audacious Barack Hussein Obama approved!

You wouldn’t know it from the lefties’ loud protestations in the last few days, but Democrats had no problem at all with Neil Gorsuch ten years ago. Here’s the group (via Fox News) of Democrat senators – past and present – who voted to confirm him to that Federal Appellate Court in 2006 ~

• Barack Obama
• Joe Biden
• Hillary Clinton
• John Kerry
• Charles Schumer (NY)
• Ron Wyden (OR)
• Dianne Feinstein (CA)
• Patrick Leahy (VT)
• Patty Murray (WA)
• Dick Durbin (IL)
• Jack Reed (RI)
• Bill Nelson (FL)
• Tom Carper (DE)
• Debbie Stabenow (MI)
• Maria Cantwell (WA)
• Bob Menendez (NJ)

But suddenly ~

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Wednesday he has “serious doubts” about Gorsuch. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., issued a scathing statement citing Gorsuch’s stance on assisted suicide, and saying nobody who believes individual rights are “reserved to the people” can support his nomination.

Good grief 🙄
If these hypocrites weren’t playing partisan politics – and of course if the Dems actually cared about selecting a justice with fidelity to the Constitution (as opposed to someone who would legislate from the bench) the Gorsuch confirmation would be a slam-dunk.

The best thing about Neil Gorsuch? His stance on religious liberty for ALL Americans ~

What sets Gorsuch’s bravado on religious liberty apart is his robust and proper understanding of the Establishment Clause [Which is where the whole separation-of-church-and-state went off the rails].

This is, of course, one of the most bastardized and confused portions of the Bill of Rights. As Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah (A, 100%) points out in his 2015 book, “Our Lost Constitution,” what was meant to keep the federal government from creating a state religion has – because of bad decisions and cultural platitudes – is now falsely understood as the “separation of church and state.”

In reality, James Madison articulated the purpose of the Establishment Clause succinctly during a House floor debate over the First Amendment in 1789: “Congress should not establish a religion, and enforce the legal observation of it by law, nor compel men to worship God in any manner contrary to their conscience.”

In our current context, however, this understanding has led to the wrong-but-popular belief that the Establishment Clause somehow mandates that any just laws that remotely smell like religious ones are unconstitutional (abortion, marriage, etc.) and – even more commonly – that all religion imagery should be scrubbed from any public space.

Is a little refugee reciprocity too much to ask for?

crossinhandsWe Americans are told by our progressive friends on the Left we must be inclusive. We’re told to embrace diversity. We’re told to welcome and love the “other.” After all, we’re told, those are our values. Then we’re told Muslim refugees rush to our shores because they share our values…

Funny thing though – as even a cursory observation reveals – the actions of most Middle Eastern and North African Muslims tell us just the opposite.

For years now I’ve been documenting the ongoing Christian genocide in that part of the world. Islamists have murdered or expelled “kafirs” from vast areas of Sudan, Somalia, Egypt (Coptic Christians), Syria and Iraq. And once Christians have been forced out of their homelands, any remaining religious structures are frequently leveled, erasing all traces of millennia of their presence.

Even now for example, with some form of stability finally returning to Iraq, Christians are being completely left out of their country’s plans for reconstruction (as World Watch Monitor reports) ~

Christians are being excluded from the reconstruction plans for northern Iraq, further eroding the likelihood of their return once Islamic State has been militarily defeated there, an alliance of UK-based charities has warned.

Anyone see any evidence of inclusivity? Diversity? Or even that perennial favorite coexistence? No ~

Iraqi Christians firmly believe that Iraq is their spiritual homeland; their presence dates back at least to the 3rd Century. Before 2003, there were approximately 1.5 million Christians in Iraq, but estimates now range from 200,000 to 500,000. Approximately 70% of Iraq’s Christians are from the Chaldean Catholic tradition, while the remainder are Syriac Orthodox, Syriac Catholic, Armenian and Protestant.

After the Allied invasion of Iraq, many Christians fled the Baghdad area for the north, where some towns (such as Qaraqosh) had been almost 95% Christian before 2003. It’s estimated that at the time Mosul was invaded by Islamic State in June 2014, only about 3,000 Christians were left from the 35,000 there in 2003.

But now we’re being lectured to by leftists who say we must accept into this country more of the same people that refuse to allow true refugees back into their own homelands?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
President Trump’s executive order on temporary visa suspensions applies to seven Muslim countries. Every one of them rates near the top of Open Doors’ World Watch List which tracks world-wide persecution and oppression of Christians. The number shown after each country indicates its ranking (For comparison purposes, the evil empire of North Korea is numero uno) ~
• Somalia #2
• Sudan #5
• Syria #6
• Iraq #7
• Iran #8
• Yemen #9
• Libya #11
Frankly, all this inclusion, diversity, peace and love talk has grown tedious. Until we see some serious advancement of human rights in these Muslim nations, until we get some assurance that Christians will be treated with mutual respect – and not forced into permanent refugee status in their own lands(!) – we shouldn’t be importing people who truly don’t believe in liberty and justice for all.
Why are Arabs still stuck in the past?
Bret Stephens, Global View columnist for the Wall Street Journal, has answers to some very good questions ~
What’s holding the Arab world back? Why, by nearly every measure, are Muslim nations so far behind the West economically, culturally and scientifically?
Stephens doesn’t mention what’s really at the heart of the developmental disparities, so I will. It’s a “God thing.” As I’ve quoted here frequently ~
TPP – goodbye and good riddance
TrumpsignsEODonald Trump’s pen was awfully busy the first week of his presidency – signing one executive order after another. (And it doesn’t look like it will be slowing down any time soon!) This was an excellent one ➡ President Trump signs order to withdraw from Trans-Pacific Partnership ~
President Trump began recasting America’s role in the global economy Monday(Jan.23rd), canceling an agreement for a sweeping trade deal with Asia that he once called a “potential disaster.”
According to Conservative Review, the TPP represented the largest trade agreement in world history, regulating about 40 percent of the global economy. It was similar to the European Union agreement in that it would have empowered an un-elected commission to regulate trade between 12 member nations; an erosion of U.S. sovereignty.
Furthermore, Americans were strongly opposed to the deal ~
A poll by Pat Caddell commissioned by Americans for Limited Government found that after being told what was in the agreement, Republicans opposed it 66 percent to 15 percent, Democrats oppose it 44 percent to 30 percent and Independents oppose it 52 percent to 19 percent.
Why tie our own hands? (Look at the complications Britain has been running into trying to extricate itself from the EU.) We’re well rid of this ill-conceived agreement.
Trump signed the executive order formally ending the United States’ participation in the Trans-Pacific Partnership in the Oval Office after discussing American manufacturing with business leaders in the Roosevelt Room. The order was largely symbolic — the deal was already essentially dead in Congress — but served to signal that Trump’s tough talk on trade during the campaign will carry over to his new administration.
“What we want is fair trade,” Trump said during his meeting with executives. “And we’re gonna treat countries fairly, but they have to treat us fairly.”
Sounds like a plan. Just don’t impose any trade restrictions that will force the American consumer to pay for the consequences.
They’re still here?
If you’ve spent any time reading my blog over the last year you know that it was only with great reluctance that I cast my ballot for Donald Trump. Once I resigned myself to doing so however, I realized that one of the bonuses of a Trump victory would be watching the mass exodus of celebrities and other assorted lefties who promised to leave the country if he were elected. Saturday Shorts – 1-28-17
sshorts2-4-12
Random links of interest, concern or curiosity from the past week or so, that deserve at least a SHORT mention:
When horse diapers and freedom of religion collide ~ And you thought you had problems 😀
Two Amish men in Auburn, Ky., filed a lawsuit last month saying a city ordinance requiring horses to wear equine diapers—bags designed to catch manure—violated the ability of Amish residents to exercise their religion.
How taxation creates black markets and human suffering ~ The law of unintended consequences. Or maybe – in the case of Saul Alinsky types – intended consequences? Logan Albright at Conservative Review explains how sin taxes (cigarettes) generally lead to more sin (human trafficking).
Here was another surprising SNL segment – from their Jan. 14th show ~ ‘Saturday Night Live’ skit ends with an unexpected pro-life twist ~ Undoubtedly the majority of writers/actors on the comedy show are liberals – pro-abortion by default. So it’s refreshing to see them present an accurate picture of a woman who is surely one of their heroes, suffragette (P.C. version: “suffragist”) Susan B. Anthony.
50,000 Pro-Life People Flood the Streets of Paris to March Against Abortion ~ Before the U.S. March and in contrast to last weekend’s Women’s March ~ Parisians were in the streets on Sunday urging the government to stop approximately 220,000 unborn babies from being killed in abortions every year. In France, even speaking out against abortion is being criminalized ~
Pro-life attorney Gregor Puppinck, who is based in Europe, previously explained: “Freedom of expression on abortion is currently being challenged in France. The French administration makes it every day more difficult for pro-life associations to express their ideas and to promote pro-life choices.”
Muslim writer Haroon Moghul says calling someone “kafir” is announcing a death sentence, calls Trump “kafir” Another outrageous Muslim apologist who will get a pass from the mainstream media ~
Obsessed with victimhood, poor Haroon cowers in fear of “Islamophobic” coffee servers: his Starbucks name is not Haroon but “Dwayne” (my Starbucks name, meanwhile, is “Haroon”). When he gets behind a keyboard, however, he is suddenly full of bravado, trafficking in malicious defamation and dishonesty (discounting the reality of jihad terror while magnifying the fiction of “Islamophobia”) and taking advantage of his audience’s ignorance about Islam to invert reality, portraying Muslims as victims of a cruel “Islamophobic” machine, instead of non-Muslims threatened by the global jihad.
Yazidi Girls Sold as Sex Slaves while Women March against Trump ~ In the end, I think most leftists only really care about themselves; they never speak out against this horrific misogyny. Hey Ashley Judd ~
“Some of those women and girls have had to watch 7-, 8-, and 9-year-old children bleed to death before their eyes, after being raped by ISIS militia multiple times a day. ISIS militias have burned many Yezidi girls alive for refusing to convert… Why? Because we are not Muslims…” — Mirza Ismail, chairman of the Yezidi Human Rights Organization-International.
Mary Tyler Moore Rejected The Feminism Of Gloria Steinem And Betty Friedan ~ She showed us women could be strong, independent and competent – without losing their femininity ~
“I want to mention my Gloria Steinem experience. She thought that I was 100% on Betty Friedan’s train. And I really wasn’t. I believed that women—and I still do—have a very major role to play as mothers. It’s very necessary for mothers to be involved with their children. And that’s not what Gloria Steinem was saying. Gloria was saying oh, you can have everything, and you owe it to yourself to have a career. And I didn’t really believe in that, so that was a little difficult for me. Well, I just had to say no.”
The Democrats Retreat From Reality ~ Unable to comprehend what happened last November they just mindlessly move further and further to the left ~
“Real people” are what the Democratic Party is sorely missing. By real I do not mean the members of a specific ethnic or religious or cultural or regional group but simply those men and women who are uninterested in the latest trend embraced by the left.
But never mind, according to Nancy Pelosi, “Democrats Do ‘the Lord’s Work,’ Republicans ‘Dishonor God'” 🙄
The Facts of Obama’s Presidency are Quite Different from the Spin in His Farewell Address ~ Helpful charts and graphs tell the real story (i.e., the national debt is skyrocketing; life expectancy plunging). James Agresti begins his piece with this ~
Obama contends that “on January 20, 2009,” when “I stood before you and swore a sacred oath” to “meet the challenges we faced…”
Well no wonder he went off the rails from day-one. He was supposed to swear an oath to preserve protect and defend the Constitution of the United States!
But that does explain this ~ Obama’s Military: A Legacy Of Unparalleled Social Change ~
While President Donald Trump has signaled a policy turn of sorts back to modernization, training, and ship building, former President Barack Obama’s military legacy centered on gays, the trans community, and woman service members […]
Marching FOR – not against – life
Last weekend at the Women’s March in D.C. celebrities were crawling out of the woodwork. Most, it seemed, were trying to prove how crude, crass and frankly – disgusting – women can get when someone like Donald Trump makes them angry. In addition to being anti-Trump, the protestors seemed united in their fervent support for abortion.
wmsMarch3
Surprising no one, none of those well-known women managed to show up for today’s March For Life. It would never occur to them to root for a generation of women not yet born. Unfortunately the pervasive celebrity-culture exported by Hollywood is overwhelmingly pro-abortion.
Comedian and political commentator Ben Stein is that rare thing among celebrities: pro-life. Earlier this month he spoke with Fox News’ Neil Cavuto about Tinsel Town’s hypocrisy ~
“I’ve earned my living in the vineyards of Hollywood for the last 40 years,” he said. In that time, he came to realize that Hollywood is full of “thuggish bullies.” While “some of them are very nice people,” Stein said that many celebrities act as “a united blacklisting front who will go against anyone that they think is politically undesirable.”
“They are not for freedom of speech, they are not for freedom of expression. They are exactly the opposite of that,” Stein said. “Hollywood in general is trying to shut down free debate within Hollywood.” […]
“I was looking at a list of people I had at a party when I first came here in 1976,” he said. “Most of them won’t speak to me anymore because I’m a Republican. … Hollywood is a one party, one-policy state. You cannot go against the prevailing wisdom, you cannot go against the crowd, or you’re in real trouble.” […]
“The thing about Hollywood people is they think of themselves as workers and proletarians and the warriors of the revolution, but they’re also snobs,” said Stein. “They’re incredible snobs.”
I would add that the majority are selfish – as opposed to selfless. When you’re self-centered and self-absorbed you don’t spend much time time thinking about the unborn. Which of course is exactly why they went to one march – and not the other.
Obamacare – harmful by design
obamatonicFor almost six long years now I and so many others have been pointing out what a dreadful idea the Affordable Care Act was from the very beginning. It was insane (Nancy Pelosi!) to think any legislation that would impact more than 20% of our economy – and affect the health of every single American – should be passed before we could find out what was in it.
Once the Democrats did pass it (without a single Republican vote mind you) we surely did find out what they had shoved down out throats: substandard, unaffordable healthcare for all but the wealthy. And despite the fact that President Obama kept making unconstitutional changes to the Act (revising deadlines and eligibilities, waiving various requirements, etc.), it remained a disaster. As I said back in October 2015 ~
Like a festering wound, the longer Obamacare goes untreated the worse it gets. None of the propaganda the progressives parroted to get the Affordable Care Act passed has turned out to be true. None. In fact it’s been just the opposite; you couldn’t keep your doctor or your insurance company no matter how much you liked them, and premiums are increasingly unaffordable…
As time goes on we learn more and more the extent of the deceit the O’Ministration employed to ram this legislation through. Remember GruberGate? Fox News’ Tucker Carlson spoke with con-man Jonathan Gruber last evening and basically got him to concede that the law was never supposed to help everybody. Gruber smugly admits that the health-care law he helped design hurt many Americans on purpose; that it deliberately picked winners and losers ~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Obamacare is unconstitutional, unfair and fiscally and physically unhealthy. The fact that it was passed with such devious intentions is the final straw. It’s got to go.
[And most Americans agree.]

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“It is of great importance to set a resolution, not to be shaken, never to tell an untruth. There is no vice so mean, so pitiful, so contemptible; and he who permits himself to tell a lie once, finds it much easier to do it a second and a third time, till at length it becomes habitual; he tells lies without attending to it, and truths without the world’s believing him. This falsehood of the tongue leads to that of the heart, and in time depraves all its good disposition.”
~ Thomas Jefferson, letter to Peter Carr, 19 August 1785
Quenching thirst in developing nations
Did you happen to catch the new commercial featuring Matt Damon announcing the involvement of Stella Artois (Belgian beer brand of BevAnheuser-Busch InBev) in the water charity he supports?
Stella Artois said on Tuesday it would donate $4.8 million over the next four years to Water.org, which uses microfinancing to fund projects like water wells and taps.
Source: NASDAQ
Business Insider put a humorous spin on the news: “Matt Damon is trying to solve the water crisis by getting people to drink more beer,” but I gotta say I’m impressed. And pleasantly surprised. I know Damon is part of that Hollywood hypocrite gun-control crowd however – unlike many other celebs – he hasn’t jumped on a soapbox and condemned his fellow Americans in a profanity-laced rant lately. He even says he’ll pitch clean water to Trump (should be interesting…).
Damon-Water
It’s encouraging to see that Water.org sounds like an apolitical organization, i.e., no hidden leftist agenda. As they describe themselves…
For more than 25 years, we’ve made it our mission to bring water and sanitation to the world. Through market-driven, financial solutions, we’ve transformed millions of lives — giving women hope, children health, and communities a future.
It sounds like a responsible, well-planned approach that includes direct input and involvement from the communities they serve ~
When you connect the right local partners and participants with the right expertise and resources, the results are solutions that work.
Essentially they’re helping those in developing nations help themselves to obtain the clean water they so desperately need.
There are a couple other charities with similar models for water provision which are doing an enormous amount of good as well. Blood:Water partners with African grassroots organizations to address the HIV/AIDS and water crises. And Samaritan’s Purse ~
Providing clean water, coupled with health and hygiene education, is perhaps the most effective measure we can take in preventing infectious disease. Samaritan’s Purse works around the world to provide clean water and promote safe hygiene practices.
As a bonus – because these two organizations are Christian – the populations they serve in Jesus’ name also get to hear the good news of the Living Water.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Just wanted to salute Damon for trying to effect change in such a positive manner (as opposed some of his fellow celebs like oh – MADONNA!) and for using his wealth and status to make the world a better place – not a ruder, cruder, nastier one.

[Also, I love him in the Bourne movies! 🙂 ]

EPA gets smacked with dose of reality

Uh-oh. Leftists are nearly apoplectic. Not only has Trump ordered an EPA media blackout…

Emails sent to EPA staff since his inauguration on Friday and reviewed by the Associated Press detailed the specific prohibitions banning press releases, blog updates or posts to the agency’s social media accounts.

Trump — who at a meeting with automakers Tuesday insisted he was “an environmentalist” — also ordered a “temporary suspension” of all new business activities at the department, including issuing task orders or work assignments to EPA contractors.

He’s also acting to advance Keystone XL, Dakota Access Pipelines…

President Donald Trump signed executive actions Tuesday to advance construction of the huge Keystone XL and Dakota Access oil pipelines, moving aggressively to overhaul America’s energy policy and dealing a swift blow to Barack Obama’s legacy on climate change.

It’s really more than they can cope with.

 GovtRegs
You see, progressives love massive bureaucracy. Every new agency they can create is another little fiefdom, enabling the Left to evade the Constitution – and tax and regulate the hell out of the private sector. Under the Obama Administration, the EPA became a rogue dictatorship, issuing new mandates at whim, totally disregarding the effect on average Americans.

When unaccountable public officials have the authority to redefine plowed farm fields as ‘mini mountain ranges’ or place regulations on ponds, ditches and puddles – they have WAY TOO MUCH POWER.

Late in December – perhaps sensing the winds of change blowing in D.C. – and just as winter was settling in, the EPA actually moved to Fine Alaskans For Burning Wood To Keep Warm ~

Civil fines by Fairbanks North Star Borough — which includes the cities of Fairbanks and North Pole, with a total population of about 100,000 — could be assessed in coming days against residential polluters. The E.P.A. could declare the entire area to be in “serious” noncompliance of the Clean Air Act early next year, with potentially huge economic implications, including a cutoff of federal transportation funds.

Source: New York Times

Writing at The Federalist, John Daniel Davidson explains what some clueless, un-elected bureaucrat in Washington D.C. doesn’t understand about winter in our 49th state ~

Like most people in Alaska, the residents of those frozen cities are burning wood to keep themselves warm this winter. Smoke from wood-burning stoves increases small-particle pollution, which settles in low-lying areas and can be breathed in. The EPA thinks this is a big problem. Eight years ago, the agency ruled that wide swaths of the most densely populated parts of the region were in “non-attainment” of federal air quality standards.

polarbear-facepalm-sml
That prompted state and local authorities to look for ways to cut down on pollution from wood-burning stoves, including the possibility of fining residents who burn wood. After all, a declaration of noncompliance from the EPA would have enormous economic implications for the region, like the loss of federal transportation funding.

The problem is, there’s no replacement for wood-burning stoves in Alaska’s interior. Heating oil is too expensive for a lot of people, and natural gas isn’t available. So they’ve got to burn something. The average low temperature in Fairbanks in December is 13 degrees below zero. In January, it’s 17 below. During the coldest days of winter, the high temperature averages -2 degrees, and it can get as cold as -60. This is not a place where you play games with the cold. If you don’t keep the fire lit, you die. For people of modest means, and especially for the poor, that means you burn wood in a stove—and you keep that fire lit around the clock.

Here’s a nutshell version from Matt Kibbe (Conservative Review) ~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now clearly we can’t let industries and individuals run roughshod over the environment; God instructs us to be responsible stewards of all creation. But it’ll certainly be nice to see the Trump Administration restore some level of sanity to the out-of-control EPA.
But the agency has either been unable or unwilling to decontaminate many of the locations, allowing pollution to fester, a DCNF analysis of more than 1,300 active Superfund sites found.
Bubble Land – for fragile lefties
Despite the fact that we now have a Republican majority in Washington, long-running comedy icon Saturday Night Live isn’t going to be lurching to the Right any time soon. But sometimes the producers seem to realize that their audience isn’t made up entirely of diehard lefties and throw conservatives a bone. Then again, SNL has always been able to spot the the satirical value in any extremist position, right OR left.
