Decisions, decisions…

The contrast between these two stories is stark – and thought-provoking. What would you or I do? Which of these people would we rather have for our neighbor? And maybe most importantly, which behavior makes for a healthy society?

“Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” ~ Luke 12:15

Smoke – from Iraq to Nebraska

Awwww… what a cool story. “Smoke” the donkey, a Marine unit’s adopted mascot – after tons of red tape and logistical problems – arrives at his new home in Nebraska.

ObamaNONcare

By now you’d have to be in a coma not to be aware of breast cancer. But how many of us are aware of the life-extending drug Avastin – taken by thousands of women with metastatic breast cancer – just to stay alive? And how many are aware that the FDA has decided that from now on access to this drug should only be extended to those who can pay for it?

From “Protesting for Life” at Breitbart’s BigGovernment:

There are thousands of women who rely on the drug for their survival. Without it, they will die…
If their proposal to “de-label” Avastin becomes reality, Medicare and private insurance companies will no longer have to cover the cost of the drug. In the eyes of ObamaCare proponents – society wins.

And women on Avastin, and their families, lose. Fortunately they have an advocate in Terry Kalley, a small businessman from Michigan who has put his life on hold to fight “the man.” In this case, “the man” is the bureaucrats at the FDA who are on a mission to cut health care costs.
Kalley’s organization, Freedom of Access to Medicines plans to hold a peaceful protest outside the FDA hearings on Avastin on June 28th, 2011.

Interesting. And of course, yet another demonstration ignored by the MSM:

5/15/11 – NY Dem Rep Rubén Díaz Leads Hispanics in Bronx Rally Against Gay Marriage

Scratching my head though… If they’re Christians, and opposed to gay marriage (and presumably pro-life) why are they “mostly Democrats”?

Secular Hostility

Keith Riler analyzes the Left’s anti-Christian sentiments in “Secularists, or Just Anti-Christians?” at American Thinker. Certainly, as he discusses, their position is inconsistent:

Contradictions are what happens when life is lived relativistically, based wholly on the self and its shifting feelings about the world. This way of life stands opposite the lifestyle based on a higher, objective, and consistent reality. Humility is the key to yielding to and achieving a freedom within objective truth. This is a far better approach to the constant dissatisfaction that comes with the angry denial of attempted autonomy.

Toward the end of the article Riler says:

Finally, secularist hostility toward Christianity may be a juvenile rejection of authority.

Ah-ha! I believe this really gets to the heart of the matter. No one is going to tell them what to do – except them. They’re stuck in the anger phase of adolescence. Trapped at the point where their burgeoning sense of autonomy is shouting “I just want to be me!”. They reject governance of any kind, including self-governance. Think “Rebel Without a Cause” – or Rosie O’Donnell on an incoherent rant.
Sad to think they may never mature to the point where they’ll realize the sense of peace, and real freedom, that comes from submitting to a Higher Authority.

The Chosen People

A great post at the Jerusalem Connection Report by Dennis Prager provides the answer to that age-old question: Are the Jews God’s Chosen people? Short answer – if you believe in A Chooser – is “Yes”. In his usual sincere, logical, and straightforward manner Prager demonstrates the truth behind this assertion.

I will make you a great nation;
I will bless you
And make your name great;
And you shall be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.
Genesis 12:2-3

Our first hummer of the summer

The hummingbirds are back 🙂 Summer must be just around the corner. (Although with our Michigan temperatures in the 50’s, it sure seems like a long way off!)

We love watching these little guys. Always thought that their beaks must have a sort of straw in them that sucked up their food. But it turns out they have a longish forked tongue that actually traps the nectar. New research with high-speed cameras shows hummer tongues in action. Here are some video close-ups: How the hummingbird’s tongue really works

Nonsensicality

Not only does the Left twist and misuse logic, they abuse the English language to such an extent that conservatives may soon be unable to communicate with them at all. At “A Hollywood Republican”, Tim Ross discusses how they’re now redefining hypocrisy.

Since “hypocrite” seems to be an effective weapon in their war on the Right, it’s a word they like to launch it at random – appropriateness is totally irrelevant. The drones – or “Low Information Voters” as Rush Limbaugh has been calling them – hear “conservative=hypocrite” a few times, it gets stuck in their head, and usually any attempts at rational debate will fail to dislodge it.

Ross’ article goes on to provide examples of real hypocrisy – which the Left, especially Obama & Co., is guilty of far more the Right. Keep the list handy when attempting to converse with a Leftie.

The King’s English

Quick – what’s the source of the following expressions?

• To everything there is a season
• In the twinkling of an eye
• Gave up the ghost
• By the skin of my teeth

If you guessed the Bible, you’re correct.

In recognition of the 400th anniversary of the King James Version of the Bible, Glen Scrivener, a minister in the Church of England, decided to search scripture for phrases that have found their way into common parlance over the centuries. He found more than 300 and is blogging about them at “The King’s English – through the Bible phrase by phrase”. Interesting – and edifying. Notably, most the phrases we’re familiar with were spoken by… Jesus:

“It seems that, in all the bible, it’s the words of Jesus that tower over all others. He speaks around 5% of the bible’s content but provides most of it’s enduring sayings.”

Here’s Scrivener’s intro video:

“Community Organizing” – with positive results

Cal Thomas has a nice article here about real “community organizing” – that actually works. And guess what? It doesn’t involve throwing lots of tax dollars at problems and pretending they’ll go away. Robert Woodson runs the Center for Neighborhood Enterprise, headquartered in Washington D.C., an organization that he founded in 1981. For the last 30 years CNE has been making a positive impact by emphasizing self-sufficiency; transforming lives from the inside out.

Woodson says the difference between programs he supports and others is that he “takes time-tested principles and virtues and applies them to addictions, homelessness, and other conditions. We have moral consistency.”…
He is emphatic about what he says and he produces success when so many other programs fail: “Faith in God transforms the inside and that faith transforms the outside.”

Also featured in Thomas’ piece was Pastor Shirley Holloway who founded the House of Help/City of Hope in Washington, D.C. to help restore lives damaged by addictions and other self-destructive behaviors. Shirley believes that committed marriages are an important part of that restoration.

said Holloway, “Success comes from continued, consistent focus in the right direction. There are couples who came in homeless who are now homeowners.”

Could real “hope and change” come from God-centered living? It sure seems to work wherever it’s sincerely practiced; Christianity has only been transforming lives for 2000 years.

Well doggone!

Hadn’t heard this but apparently the SEAL team that took out bin Laden brought along some canine assistance – a Labrador Retriever . (So much for cultural sensitivity.) Three cheers for man’s best friend!
