“Jim Jones” Conyers and His Detroit Suicide Mission

Detroit’s finances are on life-support. And U.S. Representative John Conyers wants to pull the plug.

Last November, the City Council cancelled its holiday recess amid reports that, without drastic cuts, the city will run out of cash in April. Motown has been raped and pillaged by so many corrupt politicians over the last several decades that the long-term prognosis is dire.

Last month, a review by the Michigan State Treasury found evidence of “probable financial stress” (if that isn’t an understatement!), and questioned the city’s ability to remain solvent. Subsequently, last week Governor Rick Snyder appointed a 10-member team to review Detroit’s fiscal situation in depth, and determine whether an emergency manager may be required, as provided for under state law, to avert bankruptcy.

Detroit faces a budget shortfall that is now close to $200 million, with no relief in sight. Even the mayor, Dave Bing, somewhat reluctantly admits that the city is probably in need an emergency manager;

“An emergency manager is what we want to avoid,” said Dan Lijana, a spokesman for Mr. Bing, who briefed members of the City Council on the issue privately in recent days. “But if we don’t address the $150 million shortfall, there isn’t another option.”

Now you’d think the city’s residents might welcome the state’s assistance in solving the current financial crisis. Many do, but not Rep. John Conyers (D) of Michigan’s 14th district.

Conyers, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, is infamous for asking “What good is reading the bill?” during the healthcare legislation debate. He’s served in congress since 1965 – a poster boy for term limits.
(Incidentally, his wife, former Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers, is presently a guest in the West Virginia federal detention center.)

Rep.Conyers has been leading beleaguered Detroiters astray for 46 years and shows no signs of stopping now. In fact, he doesn’t seem to care if the city goes flat broke. He and his assorted cronies, union pals and the entitlement crowd want nothing to do with help from any “outsiders” – consequences be damned. On January 2nd he and other local leaders met at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit with hundreds of concerned residents, singing “We Shall Overcome,” and voicing their opposition to the state’s intervention. As MLive reports:

Conyers, who has asked U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to review the constitutionality of Michigan’s Public Act 4 (which allows for the appointment of an emergency manager), told residents he will use his relationships in the White House to stop the appointment of an emergency manager for Detroit.

“It just so happens that I have a closer relationship with the 44th President of the United States and his Attorney General, Eric Holder, than I have ever had with anybody in the Washington White House,” he said, failing to mention the public disputes he has had with President Barack Obama.

(Color me unimpressed.)

At a similar rally last week (Conyers was not in attendance), Minister Malik Shabazz expressed the sentiments of the Anti-Emergency Manager crowd:

“We’re not going to allow the hands of the human rights clock or the civil rights clock to be turned backwards,” Shabazz said. “They keep taking and taking and taking from Detroit. Why not leave us alone. That’s all we want. Leave us alone and let us govern ourselves.”

So apparently fiscal irresponsibility is now a civil right. The same political party that ran Detroit into the ground for the last 60 years would rather see the city go bankrupt than let the state implement any measures to improve the situation.

And they don’t really want to be “left alone.” They’ll be more than happy to grab more handouts, federal, state or otherwise, but not if it entails any financial accountability.

Rather than helping his constituents, John Conyers selfishly manipulates them.
Jim Jones and the tragedy of the Peoples Temple came to mind because, here too, was a man like Conyers, pathetically obsessed with his own power and influence.

Let’s hope there are enough sane Detroiters who realize that ignoring the reality of looming financial disaster would be “citycide.”

Gloomy New Year?

“HAPPY New Year!”

The beginning of a new year typically fills us with hope and enthusiasm. As we clink glasses and cheer at the stroke of midnight we’re anticipating the prospects of a fresh start, looking forward to the next twelve months with enthusiasm.

Unfortunately, the early news for 2012 provides little reason for such optimism this year. Instead, a quick scan of web headlines from the last few days brings a deepening sense of foreboding:

Regardless of how the MSM tries to spin the facts, the economy is not improving.

2012 Could Be The Year Germany Lets The Euro Die ~ Most of Europe is drowning in unsustainable debt and soon it’ll be every country for itself. Financial analyst, Ambrose Evans-Pritchard, predicts “a global downturn on all fronts.”
Standard Charter’s CEO, Peter Sands says, about a break-up in the Eurozone, “Nobody should underestimate what a big deal that would be, because it would be very difficult to manage the contagion risk, even if it was only Greece. The disruption from that would really be quite significant.”

The U.S. national debt is well over 15 trillion and climbing. In case you’re wondering, that’s $180,400 per citizen.

From the UK Mail: The spectre of 1932: How a loss of faith in politicians and democracy could make 2012 the most frightening year in living memory. (What a cheerful subtitle!) ~ Drawing eerie parallels between today – and eight decades ago; critically unstable financial markets, shifting world powers, increasing isolatism. Even a secular socialist, as the author (Dominic Sandbrook) appears to be, can see big trouble brewing.

Radical Islam relentlessly marches on.

The Center for American Progress’ Jihad Against the Free World ~ Anti-American George Soros and his radical Muslim pals. “A more accurate name for CAP would be the Center for Islamist Progress. There is no Islamist thug or regime too awful for the Center, whose number one priority is backing Islamist takeovers in the Middle East.”

And unfortunately, 2011 was The Year We Lost Afghanistan, Iraq, Egypt, Turkey, Tunisia and Most of the Middle East ~ “…the year that Obama helped topple several regimes that served as the obstacles to Islamist takeovers.”

Time Magazine declared that 2011 was the Year of the Protester, they might have more honestly called it the Year of the Islamist. In 2010 the Taliban were still hiding in caves. In 2012 they are set to be in power from Tunisia to Afghanistan and from Egypt to Yemen. They won’t go by that name of course. Most of them will have elaborate names with the words “Justice” or “Community” in them, but they will for the most part be minor variations on the Muslim Brotherhood theme.

The Occupiers and their irrational antics aren’t going away.

New Years Blitzkreig: Obama-Endorsed #OWS Occupy Nazis Use Jew-Hating Iconography to Crash and Destroy Rose Parade, and in NYC #OWS Stab NYPD, Destroy Zuccotti Park ~ In fact the anarchy and anti-Semitism of the OWS protests are increasing – “along with the media’s kneejerk hatred of the good for being the good.”

And the rest of us are getting awfully nervous.

In Smith and Wesson We Trust (and It Looks Like Santa Does Too) ~ Looks like a lot of us had “gun” on our Christmas wish lists.

…judging from sales receipts and FBI reports regarding sales for December 2011, it seems that Santa delivered at least 1.5 million firearms for Christmas.
…a growing trend among people of all walks of life: namely, folks are less and less trustful of government’s ability to keep them safe.

Or maybe, a one commenter quipped:

CORRECTION:

“namely, folks are less and less trustful of government’s ability to not kill them.”

So, Is the West Doomed? In this article at FrontPageMag, Bruce Bawer gets at the real crux of the struggle we’re facing: the mis-education of the last two generations of students in western democracies. He cites several surveys which indicate a serious lack of historical, geographical and ideological knowledge, particularly among the young. For instance, shockingly, one in three British people thinks Winston Churchill was a fictional character. 😯

If knowledge is power, ignorance is weakness. A Western world run by people most of whom either think Winston Churchill was a fictional character or are barely aware of who he was and what he did – and how radically different their own lives would be if he had never existed – is the stuff of nightmares.

The West is, after all, engaged in a struggle on many fronts with a civilization (to use the term loosely) that has a long, long memory. It’s no exaggeration to say that this struggle will decide the future of freedom. And the grim truth is that freedom stands very little chance when those who are supposed to be fighting for it are so innocent of history that they can’t properly appreciate just how hard-won and precious a legacy that freedom is.

Fed misinformation by a biased media, and nurtured on revisionist history, our citizenry is rapidly losing its ability for rational thought and critical thinking. The answer to Bawer’s rhetorical question may very well be “yes.”

So, for “Auld Lang Syne,” let’s wish each other a “Happy New Year!” And hope – and pray – that we do get one… Instead of the gloom and doom that appear to be lurking just over the horizon.

Hoo-hoo still believes in Darwinian Evolution?

Almost every evening recently we’ve heard a Great Horned Owl hunting in the woods behind our house. Since they’re nocturnal, we’ve rarely been lucky enough to glimpse one, but it’s captivating just to listen to the hoo-hoos echoing through the valley.

This slow-motion video aids our imagination by providing an up-close look at an owl (not sure, but it looks like a Great Horned) coming in for the kill. Wow – I’d hate to be the prey it’s zooming in on!

Now seriously, how did this marvel of engineering “evolve” from say – pond scum – or even another avian species? Even factoring in millions of years of adaptations? Did prey suddenly decide to turn predator? And did it achieve that transformation through random, purposeless, directionless processes? Creation-Evolution Headlines points out the extreme improbability behind such theories;

Mutations are almost all harmful or neutral. Beneficial mutations, almost unknown in genetics (the controversial examples often with damaging pleiotropic side effects) could never accumulate fast enough to create any of (the owl’s amazing abilities)…
An environment cannot create an adaptation any more than a mountain can create a mountain climber. Let’s rid ourselves of evolutionary myths and face the facts of nature with humility and wonder.

And let’s recognize that – instead of being evolved – the owl clearly appears to be beautifully designed to function perfectly, as a silent but deadly nocturnal flying machine.

Mele Kalikimaka from the Obamas!

Mele Kalikimaka is the thing to say,
On a bright Hawaiian Christmas Day,
That’s the island greeting that we send to you
From the land where palm trees sway,

Here we know that Christmas will be green and bright,
The sun to shine by day and all the stars at night,
Mele Kalikimaka is Hawaii’s way
To say, “Merry Christmas,
A very Merry Christmas to you.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As a proud taxpayers, in this season of giving, I’m sure we’re all thrilled to contribute our fair share to make the lives of the first family ever more plush and luxurious. After all, who are we to begrudge them $4,000,000+ for 17 days of pampered relaxation on the tropical paradise of Oahu?
Malia Zimmerman, at the Hawaiian Reporter, has a breakdown of the expenditures for the self-indulgent getaway:
The total cost (based on what is known) for a 17-day round trip vacation to Hawaii for the President and his family and staff and security is an estimated $4,113,038.
And that’s the way the Obamas say “Merry Christmas” to you – suckers!
Founding Wisdom [Flouted by the Foolish]
“Let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.”
~ George Washington, from his Farewell Address, 1796 ~
As the Left progressively attempts to erase every vestige of God and religion from the public sphere, especially during the Christmas season, it’s critical to bear in mind that America’s founders firmly established our constitutional republic on Christian principles. Matt Spalding at Heritage’s Foundry, posted an article yesterday that serves as a timely reminder: Faith in America ~
…the American Founders recognized general moral precepts that are understandable by human reason and no less agreeable to faith in the form of a general revelation of creation. This morality common to both natural reason and divine revelation, usually termed natural law, is the philosophical ground of the American Founding.
From the perspective of religious faith, the basic principles of the Founding, at the level of political principles, were understood to be in essential agreement with the core precepts of the Bible. That this is the case can be seen throughout the many church sermons published from the founding era. While we have never been and should not try to become a nation defined by a particular or official religious denomination, we must never forget that, as the Supreme Court said in 1952 (and reiterated in 1963, and again in 1984), “We are a religious people whose institutions presuppose a Supreme Being.”
The health and strength of liberty depend on the principles, standards, and morals shared by nearly all religions. What the “separation of church and state” does is liberate America’s religions–in respect to their moral forms and teachings–to exercise unprecedented influence over private and public opinion by shaping citizens’ mores, cultivating their virtues, and in general, providing a pure and independent source of moral reasoning and authority. This is what Alexis de Tocqueville meant when he observed that even though religion “never mixes directly in the government of society,” it nevertheless determines the “habits of the heart” and is “the first of their political institutions.”
As we gather with our families to celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah, let us remember that our greatest blessing as Americans is the freedom to pursue our eternal duties to God and of religion to pursue freely its divine mission among men on earth.
Saturday Shorts – 12-24-11
Random links of interest, concern or curiosity from the past week or so, that deserve at least a SHORT mention:
USPS carrier not allowed to deliver while wearing Santa suit (Bellevue, WA) ~ “Scrooged!” But – good news – the federal bureaucrats have reconsidered and reached a compromise, allowing mailman Bob McLean to don his Santa hat on Friday and wear the full suit on Christmas Eve. How magnanimous of them.
Meanwhile, the “War on Christmas” continues apace. World Net Daily chronicles the various assaults: The ultimate guide to attacks from anti-Christmas Grinches.
Chevy Volt Costing Taxpayers Up to $250K Per Vehicle ~
GM has sold around 6,000 Volts so far. Taking advantage of some 18 different government deals that included loans, rebates, grants and tax credits, each vehicle was subsidized between $50,000 and $250,000. If you include the manufacturers who produced the Volt batteries, the potential government subsidy per Volt increases to $256,824.
…“It’s a glaring example of the failure of central planning trying to force citizens to purchase something they may not want. … They should let the free market make those decisions.” – Michigan State Rep Tom McMillin (R-Rochester Hills).
Global Warming and Walnut Trees: a Case Study in Deception ~ Nuts to global warming! Watts Up With That reports on a clear case of deliberate (devious!) misrepresentation of scientific research.
…a sad example of how money and ideology have corrupted contemporary science. Everything has to be tendentiously linked with climate change in order to obtain money. The public is being swindled, and the respect people have for science and scientists is being eroded.
Iraq’s Christians Near Extinction ~ Somehow the msm just totally misses this story…
Note the two important facts here that play over and over whenever Christians are persecuted under Islam: 1) Despite their frequency and severity, they “receive little international attention” (indeed, only the most spectacular of terrorist attacks on Christians—such as the 2010 Baghdad church attack which left some 60 dead—ever receive mainstream media attention); and 2) as usual, the attacks followed “a sermon last Friday by a local mullah” (in other words, are Islamic in nature).
Was there really a Star?
And by the light of that same star
Three Wise men came from country far
To seek for a King was their intent
And to follow the star wherever it went…
This star drew nigh to the northwest
O’er Bethlehem it took its rest
And there it did both pause and stay
Right o’er the place where Jesus lay.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Was the star of Bethlehem only a legend? Just a nice touch to embellish the Christmas story? A bit of magic added to spice up the the “myth?” Or was it actually a real, historical event…

Reaching back to the 17th century, and building on Johannes Kepler’s sky-mapping, and his laws of planetary motion, today’s computer technology makes it possible to fully chart the dance of the stars. We can view not only the present, and predict future astronomical movements, we can also peer back at the distant past. For instance… two thousand years ago.

Using star-mapping software, Rick Larson did just that, and discusses his findings in “The Star of Bethlehem,” a DVD and accompanying website. The evidence he presents for an extremely bright star (actually a star and a planet aligned) over Bethlehem, around the time of Jesus’ birth, is quite compelling.

I highly recommend the DVD – or at least a visit to the website (facebook page). If you’re already a believer, you’ll find your faith confirmed and strengthened.
If you’re a skeptic, I suggest you suspend your disbelief for a moment… and consider the evidence in the heavens. God is there – reaching out to you.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they display knowledge.
There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard.
Their voice goes out into all the earth,
And their words to the ends of the world.
~ Psalm 19:1-4 ~
