Obama’s Double-Standards on the Value of Human Life

So Mr. President, which is worth more, the lives of Americans, or the lives of Afghanis?

To most right-thinking individuals, all murders of innocent civilians are equally horrific. In Obamaland however, there’s a difference; the answer is whichever garners more political points from his Leftist base.

The recent killings in Afghanistan, apparently carried out by Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, are tragic from any perspective. While it will be some time before we ever fully learn his motive(s), at this point it appears that Bales may have snapped under pent-up frustration and the violent realities of war.

As Andrew C. McCarthy said in his excellent article at National Review Online yesterday, the situation in Afghanistan might be called a “powder keg,” except that is what one says in anticipation of a future explosion…

… In Afghanistan, the explosions are already happening, their pace and ferocity on the rise. Afghans went on a murderous rampage after some Korans were accidentally burned, Korans that jihadists had used to incite each other by adding handwritten messages reaffirming hatred of Americans. Among nearly three dozen killed when the mayhem began were two American soldiers, murdered by a treacherous Afghan “soldier” they were training.

Soon after, two more U.S. officers were shot in the back of the head by Afghan “security” personnel at the interior ministry in Kabul. A few days later, two more American soldiers were killed by Afghan “soldiers” at a base in Kandahar. In fact, our “partners” have turned their guns on scores of our troops in the last five years, killing 70, wounding many more. Those are just the U.S. casualty figures. British forces and other NATO personnel are also being assassinated with regularity.

Still, our forces are expected to trust these faithless partners. Trust them and, at the premeditated cost of American lives, protect Afghan civilians — tribal Islamists rife with Taliban and other terrorist sympathizers. There is a reason al-Qaeda was so comfortable in Afghanistan: It is nigh impossible to know who is a civilian.

Sgt. Bales, on his fourth deployment, was facing the reality of this situation on a daily basis. That in no way justifies his behavior but it does serve to illustrate the extremely stressful environment he was dealing with.

In recent years our military has increasingly been ordered to accomplish the nearly impossible. For their heroic efforts they’ve received more condemnation that support from their cowardly commander-in-chief.

Here’s what the president had to say last Tuesday in the wake of the Afghan killings:

“The United States takes this as seriously as if it was our own citizens and our own children who were murdered… I can assure the American people and the Afghan people that we will follow the facts wherever they lead us. And we will make sure that anybody who was involved is held fully accountable with the full force of the law.”

Like much of Mr. Obama’s high-minded rhetoric this proclamation may or may not come to pass. But if he’s actually serious in this case, where in the (pardon me) hell is his righteous indignation when it comes to Major Nidal Hasan?

Remember how our illustrious commander-in-chief dealt with that tragedy? Obama’s Frightening Insensitivity Following Shooting.

The Fort Hood massacre took place 2 ½ years ago! Where is the “full force of the law” for the 13 Americans gunned down in cold blood, and 32 more injured? When will Hasan be held “fully accountable?” How seriously did Obama take those murders of “our own citizens?”

A cursory internet search turns up little information on this case; it’s difficult to know what’s going on. The trial date keeps getting pushed forward. Apparently it was last set for March 5th, but I can’t find anything to indicate that it ever actually got underway… (Has anybody heard anything?)

Yet as recently as July of last summer Major Hasan was still collecting a government paycheck. Of course as the Ft. Hood commander, Lieutenant General Campbell says; “It’s imperative we maintain the integrity of the court martial so he gets as fair a shot as possible defending himself with his team.”
Kind of like the “fair shot” his vicitms got?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You know what Mr. President? How about as soon as the victims and families of the Ft. Hood tragedy get some justice, and Major Hasan is held fully accountable for his actions, then we can move on to Sgt. Bales? Let’s get our priorities in order!
Thanks George – Glad you’re on the RIGHT side of this issue!
Up-date – 3-16-12: George Clooney arrested in planned protest at Sudanese embassy ~ Actor intended to be arrested in Washington, DC demonstration to plea for action against human rights abuses in Sudan.
Not so sure the cause is furthered by antics like this. Rather tawdry tactics for such a noble goal. Must be the Leftist in him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Well knock me over with a feather. If you’d asked me yesterday to say something good about George Clooney I’d have drawn a blank. Well OK, he wasn’t bad as Batman, or in the “Ocean’s” movies… but he is featured in Jason Mattera’s new book “Hollywood Hypocrites” and he’s a charter member of Discover the Network’s Leftwing Millionare’s Club.

A Bush-basher, gun-control advocate, enviro-nut… Clooney’s pretty much on board with all the Leftist causes.

So even though I was aware of his activism on behalf of the victims of civil war in the Sudan, I was still taken aback to hear him speak out against the ongoing persecution of Christians in that country.

While the msm obsesses over Sandra Fluke, birth control and getting Rush Limbaugh off the air, Khartoum’s National Congress Party (NCP) headed by Omar Hassan al-Bashir has been brutally obsessed with ethnic cleansing in southern Sudan.

For over two decades Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA) has been involved with efforts to end the violence and suffering in this war-torn area. He recently issued a report summarizing his February trip to South Sudan:

Sudan has been ravaged by war intermittently for nearly four decades. More than 2 million people have perished from war and famine-related deaths from civil war pitting the Khartoum government against black Christians and others in the southern half of the country.
In January 2005, after two-and-a-half years of negotiations, and the tireless efforts of former U.S. Senator John Danforth, appointed by President George W. Bush as special envoy to Sudan, the North and the South signed the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) signaling an end to the 21-year civil war. Hopes were high for the future, especially among the people of South Sudan who longed for autonomy, peace and basic human rights.

However, for the last couple of years;

…it has become painfully apparent that the government in Khartoum is again engaged in a brutal campaign against its own people in the north, specifically in Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile states, which border South Sudan. The ensuing crisis has resulted in thousands of people fleeing the violence and crossing the border into South Sudan. [The suffering of the Nuba Mountain people has been particularly intense]

Since coming to power, Khartoum’s National Congress Party (NCP) has employed scorched earth tactics against various marginalized groups within its borders.

Samaritan’s Purse, Franklin Graham’s organization has also been involved in the Sudanese humanitarian crisis for years; providing food, shelter, clean water, agriculture assistance, education, church reconstruction, medical aid, and vocational training programs.

In February two Heiban Bible College buildings that they had helped construct were destroyed by bombs ~

Over the past 10 years, Samaritan’s Purse has supported Christians in the Nuba region, building 168 churches while providing aid through agricultural, educational and clean water projects. Since 1993, Samaritan’s Purse has spent some $100 million helping the Sudanese people and has rebuilt 478 churches since 2005.

“My prayer is that the world will not just sit by and watch and hope for the best,” Graham said, “but make it clear to the government of Sudan that attacks like these will not be tolerated.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To his credit, Clooney has been a vocal opponent of Sudanese genocide for years. In his effort to raise awareness of the present crisis he met with our “Christian” President yesterday. Considering the fact that Franklin Graham was disinvited from the Pentagon prayer event for the National Day of Prayer in 2010, and Obama is really busy with his re-election propaganda campaign (and his NCAA basketball bracket) right now, we’ll be prayerfully waiting to see how that pans out.
But God bless the efforts of Clooney, Samaritan’s Purse and everyone involved with trying to bring an end to this tragic situation.
“Liberally Conservative” – or just confused?
“I’m fiscally conservative but socially liberal.”
A frequent mantra from talk-show callers, this statement is often followed by “And that’s why I can’t vote for Santorum” or “That’s why I support Ron Paul.”
The proclamation is usually delivered in a measured tone, calculated to convey how very reasonable and rational the speaker is:
“Yes, as an independent thinker I’ve carefully considered past and present socio-economic trends and sagely concluded that conservatism is definitely called for in fiscal matters, but when it comes to morals well, that’s personal, whatever works for you.”
The glaring problem with this theory is that, all historical evidence to the contrary, it assumes a dualistic view of human nature. It says we’re able to behave one way in this area of our lives and the opposite way in this area. That we can be totally unfettered socially, yet totally disciplined in economic matters.
But if we’re generally freewheeling when it comes to our personal lifestyle choices, how do we magically develop restraint or responsibility in fiscal matters?
We don’t. As our friends across the pond are slowly, and painfully, realizing.
Two recent articles in the UK Telegraph give evidence that the British government is gradually waking up to the fact that single parent homes, particularly single mother homes, may not be the best living arrangement for today’s youth.
First, a study done in the wake of last summer’s London riots found that “troubled” youth tend to come from families headed by a single mom.
The issue has now quickly risen up the Prime Minister’s agenda and Downing Street aides believe that family breakdown is one of the most urgent problems facing Britain. ..
… Eric Pickles, the Communities and Local Government Secretary, said: “These troubled families are in total breakdown.
“The absence of a positive father figure is a huge problem and often the fathers who are present have severe drug and alcohol addictions and are not working.
“Clearly we want to work towards a situation where the fathers in these families provide stability, which means getting them back to work, so they can bring in money and be a positive role model to their children.”
Leave it to the nanny state to waste money learning what their grandparents could have told them for free. And of course the “fix” for broken families, as is always the case with big government, is more… altogether now -–> “taxpayer dollars” ~
Last year, David Cameron announced plans for a network of “family troubleshooters” who could be paid thousands of pounds to turn around the problem families.
The new troubleshooters – who are a mixture of charity, council and private sector workers – will receive almost £450 million in taxpayers’ money to help 120,000 troubled families.
[Source: The 72,000 problem families with no father and no male role model]
Yes. Social liberalism inevitably leads to fiscal liberalism.
Another British (presumably tax-payer funded) study, the “Social Justice Strategy Paper” found that: Marriage is particularly good for children 😯
Children who have experienced the breakdown of their parents’ relationship are “more likely to have poor cognitive development and education and employment outcomes than those who have lived with both birth parents.”
“Outcomes” are better for children when parents stay together, the paper says. Research shows that about one in three cohabiting couples splits up before a child’s fifth birthday, compared with one in 10 married couples.
“This Government believes marriage often provides an excellent environment in which to bring up children,” it says. “The Government is clear that marriage should be supported.”
[Source: “Marriage is best for raising children, Government says”]
Amazing. “The Government” is finally acknowledging what used to called “common sense.”
~~~~~~~~~~~
Jeffrey Bell, author of The Case for Polarized Politics: Why America Needs Social Conservatism, recently spoke at the Heritage Foundation on the false dichotomy of social-fiscal issues [Well worth the 45 minutes to listen; Bell explains the history behind the mistaken belief that morality doesn’t matter. Video: HERE] ~

“Social conservatism is inspirational. It is people who sense that there is just something out there that if they could just keep from being overwhelmed by the culture, that they could live better lives. That it would be better for [children] growing up if there were a husband and a wife in the home.”

Liberals want people to believe that the conservative movement is a problem for today’s society. In reality, social conservatism is the solution to societal breakdown.

The more a society distances itself from social conservatism the higher the financial costs to that society. Which leads to more bureaucracy, more taxing, more spending and out-of-control government.

Further, as Heritage reminds us “it is important to remember that social issues are central to preserving the Principles of the Founding.”

Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.

~ John Adams ~

IAF – “Iron Dome” Defending Israel

As the terrorists in Gaza continue to fire rockets into southern Israel (over 200 since last weekend) – and the mainstream media yawns – the current reality on the ground is: frequent “code red” sirens, frayed nerves, closed schools – and “kids” like this – manning the Iron Dome defense system:

The Feeling of Saving Lives ~ Israeli Air Force

As the atmosphere down in southern Israel intensifies, the soldiers of the Iron Dome continue the battle of protecting the cities that are under constant attack. The ongoing pressure and rush adrenalin can be felt from miles away, but the soldiers keep their focus at all times, determined to do anything in order to complete their job in the best way possible. This past weekend they have managed to intercept over 50 rockets.

Harvard Needs a New Motto: “Whatever”

Harvard University got its present name when, on March 13th in 1639, New College (founded 1636) was renamed for John Harvard, a Puritan minister. In 1637 Harvard and his wife had emigrated from England to avoid religious persecution. They settled in Massachusetts where John became a teaching elder at the First Church of Charlestown.

Unfortunately Harvard died of consumption barely a year after arriving in America. But he bequeathed half his estate and a 400-book collection to New College, which is how it came to bear his name.

History doesn’t record many details on the life of John Harvard, but as a Puritan minister, it’s unlikely he’d be too proud of his namesake today. I’m pretty sure present-day Harvard doesn’t have much use for John’s dusty old books anymore. Or his dusty old worldview.

Yet, like nearly every college founded in the New World, Harvard – as explained in an early brochure – was established: “To advance Learning and perpetuate it to Posterity; dreading to leave an illiterate Ministry to the Churches.” I doubt the school’s current brochure includes a similar statement. And I wonder what percentage of the current student body knows that Harvard University’s motto is “Truth . . . for Christ and the church”?

Harvard mothballed those quaint sentiments decades ago. Instead they’ve embraced an “all truth is relative” perspective where pretty much anything goes – except traditional Christianity.

For instance, I’ll bet you didn’t know that:

• “Health is a fundamental right of every human being.” ~ Indeed. This is a “core value” of the Harvard School of Public Health

• There’s nothing wrong with pornography so long as one can find an “ethical” source for it. ~ Harvard – home of ethical porn

• “Neither truth nor standards matter when it comes to one of the ideological raw nerves like race.” ~ Thomas Sowell on Lawrence Summers’ ’06 resignation.

• It’s OK for the college to host a pseudo-academic conference devoted to calls for Israel’s extermination. ~ Harvard’s Academic Pogrom at FrontPageMag.com

• CRT (Critical Race Theory*), as advanced by President Obama’s favorite Harvard Law School Professor, and antithetical to our Constitutional Republic, is worthy of serious academic consideration ~ Critical Race Theory Explained

I’m not sure what bankrupt relativistic philosophy(s) Harvard embraces these days. Certainly it’s not the transcendent “Veritas” emblazoned on the University’s seal.

But that is the only “Truth” that will ever set their students truly free.

*CRT in brief:

Racism cannot be ended within the current system; the current system is actually both a by-product of and a continuing excuse for racism. Minority opinions on the system are more relevant than white opinions, since whites have long enjoyed control of the system, and have an interest in maintaining it.

Critical race theorists attack the very foundations of the [classical] liberal legal order, including equality theory, legal reasoning, Enlightenment rationalism and neutral principles of constitutional law. These liberal values, they allege, have no enduring basis in principles, but are mere social constructs calculated to legitimate white supremacy. The rule of law, according to critical race theorists, is a false promise of principled government, and they have lost patience with false promises.

Food $tamp$ – Enabling Abuse and Dependency

As you probably remember from your high school psych class, Russian scientist Ivan Petrovich Pavlov is credited with developing the concept of classical conditioning – or learned response; an effective type of behavior modification. Working primarily with dogs, Pavlov demonstrated how consistent neural stimuli can lead to a conditioned response.

Always eager to control the masses, the progressive elites of our day have successfully replicated Pavlov’s experiments on human subjects in the form of the welfare state. Of course rather than reward good behavior (encouraging a strong work ethic and self-sufficiency) which would be contrary to their purposes, they reward bad behavior with the aim of creating a permanent underclass.

According to the progressive definition of “success” the food stamp program has certainly been a real “triumph;” a deviously effective means to convince the susceptible that they must depend on the government for their literal daily bread.

Here in Michigan we recently had two examples of just how “successful” this Pavlovian training has been. In the past several months Amanda Clayton and Leroy Fick each won the lottery – $1,000,0000 and $2,000,000 respectively – and yet neither feels any inclination to seek gainful employment, and both believe they’re still entitled to receive food stamps.*

Perfect. Just the kind of dependent mentality the Left looks for in a loyal Democratic voter. No surprise then that Michigan keeps getting “bluer” all the time – 1 in 5 people in the state are on food stamps!

That ratio is 1 in 7 nationwide, which is bad enough. The number of food stamp recipients is up 30% since Obama took office and is now costing the taxpayers some $75.3 billion annually.

Then there’s the potential for abuse inherent in any government give-away program. Food stamp fraud costs us about $750 million each year as Heritage’s Foundry reports:

The most common type of fraud is food-stamp trafficking where retailers encourage food-stamp recipients to trade their benefits for cash, alcohol or cigarettes (- or maybe lottery tickets?). Once the card is swiped, the merchant takes full payment for the transaction’s stated price and pockets the difference, which can add up to $50,000 a month.

“The crime is as widespread as it is simple: Stores accept food stamps, but instead of requiring that customers walk away with wholesome groceries, they provide the customers a small amount of cash — typically 50 cents on the food stamp dollar. While taxpayers lose out — the money isn’t going toward wholesome food — food stamp recipients are receiving no-strings attached cash while stores are taking a hefty profit for serving as a moneychanger,” according to (a) Scripps Howard report.

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, is trying to combat the this ongoing abuse of the food stamp program. Naturally, the progressively-minded USDA is being less that helpful in the effort.
The Heritage article concludes with this:

Under the Obama administration, the United States has seen a dramatic increase in the welfare state, making individuals more dependent on government.

“Now, more than 67.3 million Americans depend on the federal government for everything from food stamps and college tuition to retirement services and health care,” according to Heritage’s Index of Dependence on Government, which revealed an 8.1 percent increase at a cost of roughly $2.5 trillion.

~~~~~~~~~~~
I think old Doc Pavlov would be less than thrilled to learn that our government was profiting from his research for such an underhanded purpose. Indeed, although he was highly regarded by the Soviets, even garnering praise from Lenin, he made no attempts to conceal the disapproval and contempt in which he held Soviet Communism…
For example, in 1923 he claimed that we would not sacrifice even the hind leg of a frog to the type of social experiment that the regime was conducting in Russia. After the murder of Sergei Kirov in 1934, Pavlov wrote several letters to Molotov criticizing the mass persecutions which followed and asking for the reconsideration of cases pertaining to several people he knew personally.
Pavlov clearly was intelligent enough to understand the negative implications of behavior modification. He would have realized that using conditioned-response techniques to discourage independence and self-reliance among one’s own citizens would eventually strip them of their individual dignity.
~~~~~~~~~~~

* A bit of common sense has prevailed here in Michigan; Clayton’s been cut from the dole and the state’s senate and house are taking steps to prevent big-payout lottery winners from collecting food stamps: Michigan Senate approves bill preventing lottery winners from getting public food assistance

Primary Votes – Who’s getting the biggest bang for the buck?

In yesterday’s UK Telegraph, Mike Smithson, editor of PoliticalBetting.com, analyzed the price per vote for the Republican primary candidates thus far:

One estimate is that for each vote cast the entire Romney campaign, including the bodies that support him, have spent $17.14. In comparison, the figure for Gingrich is $9.05, while Santorum has spent a miserly $2.54.

The remarkable thing is how far Santorum has come with so little.

And how much Romney has had to spend to get and keep his lead…$17.14/vote. Wow!

“In the Footsteps of the Apostles,”
featured in the March issue of National Geographic,* presents a surprisingly respectful look at the spread of early Christianity. Quite objective for the most part, the article recounts the historical beginnings of the faith ~

The Bible says Jesus named a dozen of his most devoted disciples Apostles, or messengers, choosing a number that paid homage to the 12 tribes of Israel. The 12 Jews preached their new faith across thousands of miles in the first century A.D., changing history.

Who were those very first evangelists?

…the twelve Apostles, sent out after Christ’s Crucifixion to spread the newborn faith (were:) Peter, Thomas, Andrew, James the Greater, James the Lesser, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thaddaeus, Simon—and Matthias, who replaced the former disciple and alleged traitor, Judas Iscariot.

In the apostolic tradition of laying hands on the sick, the Reverend Debendra
Singh prays for Christian refugees in Odisha, India. Some 60 families fled
to these abandoned buildings after a 2008 attack on their village.
“Now,” he says, “they have nothing except the Lord.”

Focusing primarily on “Doubting” Thomas (who traveled to India), Mark the Evangelist (Egypt) and Mary Magdalene (France) – and the seeds of faith that they planted – the authors take the reader on a journey from what is now Israel to Asia, North Africa and Europe.

Isn’t it amazing to realize that the faith was spread largely though the efforts of just a handful of disciples? And more amazing still to consider that from such humble beginnings Christianity is now found in almost every corner of the world…

They were unlikely leaders. As the Bible tells it, most knew more about mending nets than winning converts when Jesus said he would make them “fishers of men.” Yet 2,000 years later, all over the world, the Apostles are still drawing people in.

It’s really refreshing to find an unbiased look at early evangelism in a secular publication. The article is perhaps food for thought for those skeptics who may want to ponder the resilience and universal appeal of the Christian faith.
