Saturday Shorts – 5-5-12

Random links of interest, concern or curiosity from the past week or so, that deserve at least a SHORT mention:

Kentucky Derby ~ Today’s the 138th annual “Run for the Roses” – time to pick your favorite. KentuckyDerby.net has current stats, past winners, traditions and a Mint Julep recipe. 🙂

Did Obama’s Immorality Influence Secret Service Agents in Colombian Prostitute/Sex Scandal? Um, I’m thinking “YES.” “How can we expect Americans in general, let alone the Secret Service agents, to uphold the law and have moral integrity if our own President does not seem to?” Indeed.

Occupy’s image blown to smithereens ~ Recount of the inept anarchists arrested for trying to blow up the Ohio 82 bridge across the Cuyahoga River Valley. Their mugshots say it all.

And in a related story, at the Blaze: Shocking Review of Occupy, Progressive & Anarchist Training Manuals ~ A refresher course in the tactics used by progressives, anarchists, Occupiers, the 99% Spring and labor unions in their collective push to rise up against the 1%. There’s even a book for kids: “A Rule is to Break: A Child’s Guide to Anarchy.” These people are psychotic!

School Says “Jesus” Shirt is Hate Speech ~ Canadian High School student suspended for week for wearing a shirt with the message: “Life is WASTED without Jesus.”

“I’ve been told by my principal that it is hate talk and is disrespectful to other people’s religions,” Swinimer said. “She said it (the shirt) cannot be in school because people would get offended.”

Christ isn’t surprised. He’s been “offending” people for 2000 years.

Who is “Julia?” [And why is she so pathetic?!]

Update 5-5-12: Paul Ryan weighs in on “Julia;” “creepy” and “demeaning.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~
“The Life of Julia,” the latest propaganda piece showcased on the Obama-Biden re-election campaign website, lists all the wonderful ways in which Obama’s policies will create an idyllic existence for the fictitious “Juila.” And by contrast, how that ruthless rat Romney would wreck everything.
“Julia” is clearly aimed at the typical “gimmee free stuff” Obama voter. From Headstart pre-school to medicare and social security (both of which will be broke long before she hits her 60’s), this woman can’t possibly survive without the federal government and OPM (other people’s money).
David Harsanyi at Human Events is also wondering; “Who the hell is “Julia,” and why am I paying for her whole life?” ~
Let’s, for the purposes of this post, set aside the misleading generalizations regarding policy in the ad (no one is innocent on that account, obviously). What we are left with is a celebration of a how a woman can live her entire life by leaning on government intervention, dependency and other people’s money rather than her own initiative or hard work. It is, I’d say, implicitly un-American, in the sense that it celebrates a mindset we have — outwardly, at least — shunned.
It is also a mindset that women should find offensively patronizing. [We do!] When they’re old enough, I hope my two daughters will find the notion that their success hinges on the president’s views on college-loan interest rates preposterous. Yet, according to the “Life of Julia,” women are helpless without the guiding hand of Barack Obama.
Reviewing the “Life Of Julia,” one is left with the impression that unless Barack Obama is re-elected, our hapless damsel will spend the rest of her days in a cardboard box.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Women who live and work in the real world, who want to be responsible for their own decisions, find this political pandering outrageous.

Women like Michelle Malkin:

In the real world, Internet entrepreneurs (myself included) launch web businesses without the SBA’s “help” and want only one thing — for Obama and his wealth-confiscators to leave us the hell alone. I’ve founded three web ventures without a penny of taxpayer money or government venture socialism and I will make sure to show my kids “The Life of Julia” to teach them how NOT to lead their lives tethered to the Nanny State.

Founding Wisdom [Flouted by the Foolish]

“The sacred rights of mankind are not to be rummaged for, among old parchments, or musty records. They are written, as with a sun beam, in the whole volume of human nature, by the hand of the divinity itself; and can never be erased or obscured by mortal power.”

Back in Biz!

WooHoo! Finally back online after my computer meltdown. 😀
Among other issues, it turned out to be an especially nasty “Rootkit” virus that’s almost impossible to eradicate. Who are these denizens of the internet’s underbelly, lurking in their parents’ basements, devising ever more destructive ways to trash the computers of total strangers?! Evil gnomes!

Anyway, just wanted to give a shout out to MajorGeeks. This is a great site with tons of helpful info on all the latest downloads, especially computer security stuff.

Although my hard drive was beyond recovery this time, they’ve been a “major” help in the past with free tech diagnosis and advice. A great source of step-by-step instructions for fixing and preventing problems.

Be prepared: check em out before you run into trouble.

Computer Woes

For the last week or so I’ve been experiencing a severe viral computer infection. Unfortunately it now appears that hospitalization will be necessary. 🙁
I’m hoping for a speedy recovery and should be back to blogging in a day or two.

Saturday Shorts – 4-28-12

Random links of interest, concern or curiosity from the past week or so, that deserve at least a SHORT mention:

Obama’s come-uppance from Elie Wiesel during self-serving visit to Holocaust Museum ~ The Holocaust should NOT be politicized. “Israel cannot not remember. And because it remembers, it must be strong, just to defend its own survival and its own destiny.” ~ Eli Wiesel

More older couples shacking up, skipping marriage ~ Why is what was wrong when they were younger, right now that they’re older? Just curious…

Governor Jindal’s Education Reform Efforts: Why They Matter
~ Long-term, focused efforts are now paying off with positive results in Louisiana:

…expanded access to high-performing charter schools, performance-based teacher tenure, and tax credits for individuals and businesses to sponsor tuition for the schools that best meets a child’s educational needs

– and the biggest payoff – vouchers!

Growth of Christianity in Iran reaches armed forces ~ Pretty amazing – in a country where the penalty for apostasy is frequently death.

King David Ruled Cities, Not Shepherds ~ Archaeological findings continue to refute liberal Bible scholars’ interpretations; in this case, that David ruled over an urban society in a fortified city, not a pastoral tribe as revisionists claim.

Triple Play! Obama Blows Off Congress, Funds Palestinians, Lies About PA Stance on Israel ~ Andrew C. McCarthy at National Review Online ~

In sum, everything Obama is saying about Palestinian compliance is a lie. Even if we were not broke, we should not be giving the PA a dime. To borrow money so we can give it to them is truly nuts.

Obama’s Muslim Connection

The Blaze has an enlightening article posted this week: Want to Know Just How Close the Muslim Brotherhood Is to the Obama Admin? It’s a preview of Glenn Beck’s new documentary, “Rumors of War 3: Target U.S.”

It’s rather disconcerting to find Islamist connections in our very own Homeland Security Department. We’re actually getting security advice from the Muslim –Jihad is our Way– Brotherhood?! Talk about the fox guarding the chicken coop!

Here’s an excerpt from Beck’s show today: “Obama and Muslim Brotherhood:”

Pretty scary stuff people…

Reality Smacks Old Grey Lady Staffers

They’re shocked, they’re appalled, they’re sickened… they’re New York Times’ staffers suddenly staring reality in the face. What a hoot!

The American Interest has an hysterical piece; “At The NYT: Clueless Blue Deer Meet Onrushing Truck” (with must-see video), describing the emotional reactions of Times’ workers to their employer’s suggestion that they actually [gasp!] help contribute to their own pension plans.

The print media has been facing extinction for years, the overall economy is in the tank, and these staffers are “horrified” that their reality-free cocoon seems to be disintegrating.

Cue the tiny violin ~

Classing-up the High School Prom

Back in the 40’s, when prom tickets were $5.00 and dances were held in the school gym, my mother-in-law attended a Catholic high school in Detroit. Lamenting today’s declining cultural trends, Mom was telling me that she and her classmates actually had to bring their prom dresses to school a couple weeks prior to the dance for the nuns’ approval. If you showed up in anything else, you wouldn’t get past the door.

Sure, the girls complained. But the nuns stuck to their guns. Everyone complied. And a good time was had by all.

So Mom and I are both happy to see this news about a locally-famous restaurant & catering facility that’s raising the expectation bar: Removing ‘raunchy’ from prom: The Roostertail cracks down.

Tom Schoenith, owner of the Roostertail, a popular party destination on the Detroit riverfront, is frankly fed-up with the sleazy attire of some of his teenaged patrons. For the 2012 prom season he’s instituted a formal dress code.

Girls are showing too much cleavage and wearing dresses that are too short. Guys are taking off their jackets and walking around in tank tops.

“When you’ve got the upper hand, you can then put your foot down about certain things, and I just said I’ve had it with the way some people look,” said Schoenith, whose facility will host more than 50 proms from now until mid-June. “I just want to go to back to the old traditional rules of etiquette.”

Bravo!

I like that they’re using the terms “ladies” and “gentlemen” – elevating expectations 🙂

School administrators clearly approve of the Roostertail’s formal dress code ~

“Every single school that we talked to thanked us for being the bad guy,” Schoenith said. “When we’re taking in $40,000 for a prom over here, it’s got to be a classy affair.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Decades ago the high school prom was held in the high school gym. I don’t think they need to change the venue any time soon. But classing-up the dress code is certainly a positive development.
Restribution – Stealing our money, ambition and dreams
Check out the trailer for “I Want Your Money” ~
You can also watch a short version of the documentary on YouTube, featuring Jimmy Neutron-like versions of Palin, Pelosi and Bill and Hill. Humorously effective look at the wrongness of socialism.
Disappearing Income…
We weren’t just imagining it: Average Household Income Has Dropped $3K Under Obama. Mitt Romney has recently been making that claim on the campaign trail, so the New York Times ran the numbers…
President Obama took office in the first quarter of 2009, when median household income was $54,797.63. As of the last quarter of 2011, median household income was $52,377.21.
This was the interval Mr. Zandi suggested using to check Mr. Romney’s statement, and it shows an income drop of $2,420.42. That’s not $3,000, of course, but it’s still pretty bad.
One could also reasonably argue that it might be more appropriate to use the quarter before Mr. Obama took office as the baseline, rather than the quarter in which he was sworn in. In the fourth quarter of 2008, median household income was about $55,380.17.
Starting from that quarter gives us a decline of $3,002.96, almost exactly the number Mr. Romney cited.
No wonder it increasingly feels like we’re trying to do more with less. We are.
But hey, we should be happy with our lot. Pity the first family, who’s in even worse shape. They’ve experienced a 70% income reduction since ’08:
2008: $2,656,902
2009: $5,505,409
2010: $1,728,096
2011: $789,674
And according to Jodi Kantor’s book, “The Obamas,” they’re definitely worried about maintaining their lavish lifestyle post-White House;
Even the president made uncomfortable jokes about why his wife needed so many things. Behind the scenes, aides said, the Obamas were concerned about money: the president’s books could only sell so many copies, and it would be years until he could write more and the first lady could write her own. From vacation rental homes big enough to accommodate the Secret Service to all the personal entertaining they did at the White House, their lifestyle had grown fearsomely expensive.
Altogether now: “Awwwwwww…”
