2012 Annual D.C. Spendathon

Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) recently released his annual report: “Wastebook 2012,” which lists the 100 most ridiculous ways the federal government found to throw away “revenues” this year:

“Until Congress has the guts to cut specific programs we will never get our debt under control. As these examples illustrate, it is not nearly as hard to make those choices as many politicians claim. Instead of spending federal dollars to help golfers imagine a smaller hole we should be trying to shrink the hole in our budget.” ~ Sen. Tom Coburn, M.D.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The fiscal cliff is looming, the national debt is well on its way to $17 trillion, individual net worth has dropped over 30% since 2005… and the only solution the D.C. Central Planners can come up with is more taxes, more taxes, mores taxes. Because after all, we can’t possibly do without vitally important expenditures like:
$27 million for Moroccan pottery classes (to improve the economic competitiveness of Morocco)
Moroccans have been making pottery since at least the fifth century B.C., with the earliest urban pottery made after 800 A.D. Perhaps USAID could learn a thing or two about pottery making from Moroccans who have been passing knowledge of the ancient craft from one generation to another for centuries.
$91 million in tax loopholes for professional sports associations – because they’re classified as non-profit organizations
Hardworking taxpayers should not be forced to provide funding to offset tax giveaways to lucrative major professional sports teams and leagues. Based on publicly available information about the NFL and NHL alone, barring major leagues from using the non-profit status may generate at least $91 million of federal revenue every year.
$947,000 to develop menus for a visit to Mars
NASA no longer has a manned spaced fleet and no current mission plans for human space flight to Mars, yet they spend about $1 million annually “researching and building the Mars menu.”
NASA’s quite good at one thing – wasting money ~
$771,000 to maintain an unused, outdated database
Employees found the database to be “outdated, not user friendly, and generally unhelpful.”557 Instead, they opt to use other forms of knowledge-sharing that NASA maintains, including an engineering network, a training academy, seminars, and a magazine.558 The NASA official in charge of the database has acknowledged the agency has no plan for how LLIS will be utilized in the future.
$4.5 billion for junk food – Food Stamp abuse
However, lax controls and mismanagement resulted in billions of dollars being spent not on healthy meals for hungry kids but instead wasted on questionable and, in some cases, illegal expenditures. Approximately $2.5 billion in improper SNAP payments are projected to be made this year, while millions of dollars more will be misspent on silly promotional activities and food with little nutritional value.
And hey, zombies need to eat too ~
The USDA Inspector General found roughly 2,000 dead people are still receiving food stamps in New York and Massachusetts combined. Additionally, its investigation revealed 7,236 people in these states are receiving duplicate benefits, while 286 are on state lists that should exclude them from receiving food stamps.83 84 These unnecessary payments amount to $1.4 million every month.
$300,000 spent by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to promote caviar
Bet you can use food stamps to buy some.
$1.5 billion for free cellphones
Thanks to Congress and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), some Americans are entitled to free or reduced-price cell phone service, and the program is ballooning out of control. What began as an effort in the 1930s to ensure all Americans had access to telecommunications service has morphed into a massive entitlement.
A scam that phone companies get to tap into for subsidies and every other cellphone user gets to help pay for ~
Funding comes through the “universal service charge” tacked on to the phone bills of most Americans.
$322 million for an L.A. courthouse no one wants
The federal government continues to move forward with a plan to construct a 600,000-square-foot federal courthouse in downtown Los Angeles, despite objections from both Democrat and Republican lawmakers and government watchdogs that the project is unneeded.
$21.6 million to maintain abandoned New Orleans homes seven years after Katrina
City and parish governments were supposed to find buyers in the neighborhoods and through auctions. LLT has almost run out of federal funds, yet it still maintains an inventory of over 3,000 homes.
$2 million overprinting commemorative stamps for “The Simpsons”
Any wonder the Post Office is going broke?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hey Washington! Here’s a idea:
Before you start demanding more “revenue” from the productive sector, stop funding all this completely counter-productive crappola. It’s not your money!

Hey Barack! Where’s the Bacon?

“The American Republic will endure until the day Congress
discovers that it can bribe the public with the public’s money.”

~ Alexis de Tocqueville ~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It’s been a month since Barack Obama’s reelection, and Detroit Councilwoman JoAnn Watson figures it’s high time for paybacks. In a council meeting yesterday, Watson lectured her colleagues:
“After the election of Jimmy Carter, the honorable 😯 (Mayor) Coleman Alexander Young, he went to Washington, D.C. and came home with some bacon,” said Watson. “That’s what you do.”
“Our people in an overwhelming way supported the re-election of this president and there ought to be a quid pro quo and you ought to exercise leadership on that,” said Watson. “Of course, not just that, but why not?”
[Translation: Hey, we voted Obama “in president” – pay up!]
At the council next session, Ms. Watson will be providing
her co-members with nutritional advice
Detroit is creeping ever closer to bankruptcy. Saving it would require some very difficult work; taking responsibility for the crisis, facing fiscal realities and doing a lot of painful belt-tightening.
Now in all honesty, belt-tightening doesn’t appear to be an idea that’s ever occurred to Watson. So she’s merely doing what the Entitlement Class has been conditioned to do – via decades of Leftist propaganda – demanding more pork.
Easier to holler for more free stuff than to actually do anything productive to improve the mess created by more than half a century of Democrat administrations and their misguided policies.
“Detroit is what happens when the load is too big
and there’s no one left to carry it.”
Motown is in line to receive millions more in emergency funding from the state of Michigan – but it comes with strings. Last month it appeared that the city and Governor Snyder had reached an agreement: before Lansing forked over more cash, the city would implement certain cost-controlling measures ~
Among the requirements, the city must approve specific legal and consulting contracts, hire turnaround firms, modify ordinances dealing with purchasing and privatization, and outsource its health and workforce development departments.
However –
City Council President Charles Pugh said he disagreed with the “carrot and stick” tactics of the agreement, but “we’ll work and do everything we can to assist the mayor’s office in getting it done.”
Sure why should Michigan taxpayers be “entitled” to any assurance of fiscal oversight?
(By the way, the Detroit City Council never assists the mayor’s office in getting anything done.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Oddly enough, while calling for more pork from Washington, Ms. Watson doesn’t seem to feel she’s in any way obligated to pay her “fair share” of taxes: Racist Tax Cheat Wants Bailout for Detroit ~

OCT 2009: I don’t see any tornado damage on the house justifying JoAnn Watson’s property tax bill of $68 for the last 10 years. That’s what the Detroit City Councilwoman has been paying while her neighbors paid $5-6,000. Seems to me a councilmember should be quite aware of what tax rates are, especially with Detroit’s budget shortfalls.

For someone who huffs and puffs about tax evaders, Watson was only going to pay the last 3 years, which is all the city can charge her. Media attention and her desire for reelection to council are the only reasons she paid her back taxes in full.

Watson doesn’t even practice social justice with her own constituents – unless she’s running for reelection.
No double-standards there.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In a recent article titled “How the Government Class Lives,” Daniel Greenfield provides an insightful look into the life and mindset of Ms. Watson – and millions more like her. How sad to give up self-reliance (self-respect?), and spend your short time on this earth engaged in what simply amounts to grievance-mongering and endless demands for perpetual hand-outs.
Did you miss “Islamaphobia Awareness Month?”
Islamaphobia Awareness Month? Who knew?
Pat Condell missed it too! But here’s his irreverent rant on just what it is that most of us non-Muslims have become “aware” of:
We’ve become aware that many Muslims have, well, “special needs,” in that they’re psychologically chained to a raft of appalling double-standards that we have to indulge if we’re to avoid tantrums and violence.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One caveat: While Condell does an exceptional job of calling out the Religion-of-Perpetual-Outrage on its duplicity, he does so as an atheist who would just as soon we do away with all religion. However, while dressing down Islamists, he comes across as an ardent, albeit unwitting, defender of Judeo-Christian values. Because, although those millennia -old values are gradually eroding, they are what still provide a philosophical foundation from which to debate, and to criticize non-Western traditions.

Condell couldn’t be nearly as confident in his argument without employing Judeo-Christian concepts such as of the rule of law, the individual worth and inherent dignity of each human being (he specifically mentions “universal brotherhood”), freedom of speech, of the press and from tyranny. The very idea of transcendent truth, which enables one to say “that is wrong because this is right,” is at the core of our cultural heritage.

Currently, the West still trudges along on the residual effects of our long established traditions and values. As these disappear, they’ll leave a philosophical vacuum. One that will be filled with something much less desirable. It will probably look at lot like tyranny. Maybe Islam.

Biomimicry – “Naturally” Inspired

Energy-efficient propulsion, natural anesthetics, quieter aircraft, improved vaccines – “Robocod?” – just some of the latest scientific advances and inventions that owe their inspiration to nature and its incredible diversity of design.

You can’t tell from a still photo, but “BioSwimmer” moves through the water just like a real fish. Video HERE.

Creation-Evolution Headlines posts regular updates on the ever-increasing breakthroughs in Biomimetics. Also refered to as “Biomimicry,” Biomimetics is the term applied to the practice of studying nature specifically as inspiration for new technology ideas.

Biomimetics is helping lead the world out of the dark ages of Darwinism, and opening up a golden age of inspiring, interesting and useful research that everyone can benefit from. Use these stories to motivate and encourage a great awakening of science as it used to be: understanding nature to benefit the world.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just a thought: If science is able to emulate God’s design in nature so successfully, maybe it’s time to re-think His design for successful human civilization. We could start with transforming individual lives, by following the 10 commandments.
Obama’s Green Energy Graveyard – Where Tax Dollars Go to Die
While the Dems relentlessly pursue higher taxes on the “rich,” they keep hoping no one will notice where the cash actually goes once they get their greedy hands on it. But rest assured, millions more will undoubtedly be used to expand the “Green Graveyard.”
A123 Systems recently became the latest company to be interred in the fed’s Cemetery of Perpetual Fiscal Folly. In October, the company received a $946,830 check from the U.S. Energy Department, on the very same day it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. That’s almost a million bucks – for a corporate burial!
“Green Graveyard” is the term Heritage Foundation used in a November 5th blog post which detailed the Obama administration’s alternative energy boondoggle: 19 Taxpayer-Funded Failures. It’s certainly a fitting epithet for the final resting place of more than $2.6 billion tax dollars.
Here’s an excerpt from Heritage’s “eulogy:”
The problem is that these taxpayer-funded handouts never achieve the intended objective. Rather, they artificially support politically preferred companies and industries, like green energy, while shifting jobs and resources from another sector of the economy.
…pointing out the failed companies is important, as it reveals the contortions politicians will go through to support private companies when their political narrative is at stake. While government intervention in the private economy didn’t start and will likely not stop with President Obama, the growing list of failed companies demonstrates the futility of central economic planning.
Last fall the Solydra story may have briefly broken through the mainstream media’s self-imposed blackout of Obama’s failures, however low-information voters were led to believe that that bankruptcy was merely an aberration. (And of course we’ll always have the Solyndra Modern Art Memorial of Glass Tubes.)
To his credit, Romney did bring up the administration’s abysmal record on green energy investments during the debates, but that was largely ignored by the Obama Press Corpse (Oh sorry – “corps”).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Unfortunately, in his post-election press conference, the president doubled-down on his we-must-address-global-warming agenda: Obama’s Alarming Global Warming Lies. So his alternative energy cemetery will probably need some significant expansion in the next couple of years.

As long as the money is forcibly taken from the “evil” rich, the electorate doesn’t know – or doesn’t care – that billions more will merely be used to backfill green graves. “Shovel-ready” baby!

Hamas-Israel Conflict – a Primer for Slow Learners

Illustrating how the poor “beleaguered” terrorists in Palestine are continually “bullied” by Israel ~

Video via Arutz Sheva (Israel National News)

Our tiny provocateur is as adept at duping his target audience as Hamas is in deceiving western journalists ~

What makes better headlines? Is it numbing figures such as the 8,000 Palestinian rockets fired at Israel since it unilaterally withdrew from Gaza in 2005, and the 42.5 percent of Israeli children living near the Gaza border who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder? Or is it high-resolution images of bombed-out buildings in Gaza and emotional stories of bereaved Palestinians? The last, obviously, as demonstrated by much of the media coverage of Israel’s recent operation against Hamas…

…Veteran journalist Marvin Kalb, writing for Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government on the terrorists’ successful media strategy against Israel, warned that “the trajectory of the media, from objective observer to fiery advocate,” had become “a weapon of modern warfare.” Kalb quotes a U.S. military expert who describes how perception has replaced reality on the battlefield and that the terrorists know it.

Prescription for Defeating Obamacare?

FreedomWorks is reporting that the number of states telling the Feds “No thanks” on the HHS health care exchanges has now grown to 22. Good news for the health of our sick economy. 🙂

Obamacare essentially decrees to the states;

• You will establish an insurance exchange for health care in your state and you will raise taxes to pay for it.

• If you don’t comply, we’ll set up the exchange for you from Washington D.C. and offset the costs by withholding any funding you would have otherwise received from the federal government.

According to Judge Napolitano, the Supreme Court has already determined that ordering the states to comply with this mandate amounts to coercion and is therefore unconstitutional.

This could definitely be the way to dismantle this Obamanation. As FreedomWorks says:

Without the exchange, federal mandates won’t work and the feds cannot distribute the necessary insurance subsidies in exchange-less states. Obamacare falls apart. Congress will then be forced to revisit the law.

22 states and counting…

HHS has pushed the deadline for planning to set up an exchange to December 14th. FreedomWorks is updating the list of states that are opting out HERE. If your state is still undecided ( Florida, Idaho, Iowa, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee at last count), this page also links to an email message you can send to the appropriate legislators, urging them NOT to go along with the exchanges.

Higher Taxes and the Law of Diminishing Returns

With all the D.C. debate about the “Fiscal Cliff,” and the Obama administration’s nonsensical proposal to address the growing economic calamity; suck more money from the private sector to grow government, you may have heard some mention of the “Laffer Curve.” The “Curve” is basically a mathematical representation of the old adage: you can’t get blood from a turnip.

Here’s a brief explanation:

Although Tim Groseclose sets the “hump” at 33%, that figure is still somewhat debatable. An excellent article at the American Thinker, by Andrew A. Morgan, explains the variables involved ~

First, the curve is different for different types of taxation and is not the same for each income bracket. For example, the curve is not the same for the Personal Income Tax as it is for the Corporate Income Tax or for the Capital Gains Tax…

The curves for these different taxes and tax rates will begin and end at the same place. But the area between the slope and point of diminishing return is certainly not the same. Secondly, the economic climate at any given point in time introduces countless variables such as the general economic growth rate, banking practices, loan interest rates, employment rates, consumer confidence, inflation rates and many others, all of which contribute to the shape of the curve. The curve is not the same for the same tax at different points in time because economic conditions are constantly shifting…

…Thirdly, it is impossible to quantitatively “measure” the relationship with any exactness because of the inherent time lag involved between changes to the tax rate and the resulting impact on government revenue. Other factors always come into play during this lag period and to some degree contribute to the resulting government revenue.

All that being said, there’s no denying that “Laffer Curve” exists:

There is a relationship between rates of taxation and government returns. Earnings and profits which are taken from the people, investors, and the private business sector do represent a reduction in both financial fuel and worker incentive…

…The more money taken from a company, the less it has to invest or to pay its employees, and the more likely it becomes that the company will seek to protect its capital from taxation or consider outsourcing costly parts of its operation or relocating part or all of its operations to a country with lower tax rates. In the case of capital gains, the more profit is taken from an investor who risked his (or her) own capital, the less inclined he will be to risk further capital.

The more money taken from a worker’s paycheck, the less money there is for his personal budget and savings. As the amount of money withheld from the worker’s paycheck increases, the benefit this worker gains from his efforts proportionally diminishes — and with it his incentive to work.

At certain tax rates, these reductions are not effectively problematic. But for each tax, there is a threshold rate above which these reductions become problematic for both the private economy and for the government’s bottom line.

Big government types like to pretend the “Curve” is merely a conservative construct. True to form, facts – economic or otherwise – never get in the way of their agenda.

As Obama prepares to reap the political benefits from the class warfare he’s fomented, keep in mind; once the government takes enough from the makers, to give to the takers, the makers will stop making and we’ll all go off the cliff together.

Benghazi: What the MSM continues to ignore

Canada Free Press has a new eye-popping interview with a government insider who claims to know the truth about what really happened in Libya [Benghazi explained: Interview with an “Intelligence Insider” – Part one of a multi-part story] ~

Here are some highlights:

• Ambassador Stevens and the three other Americans weren’t murdered in an American embassy or consulate; it was really a rented villa located in a somewhat residential area. In actuality, the terrorists attacked one of the largest, one of the most active CIA operation centers in North Africa, if not in the entire Middle East.

• After Gaddafi was overthrown the U.S. helped round up the weapons still scattered around the country, ostensibly to destroy them. Instead, those that were still functioning, found their way into the hands of Islamic terrorists.
According to Obama and Hillary Clinton, we were in Libya to collect and destroy these weapons to make for a ‘safer’ Libya…
In fact, the arms were being funneled through Libya, crisscrossing Libya on a Muslim Brotherhood managed strategic supply route…

… The entire arms and weapons running operation was headquartered in Benghazi.

• From Libya, the weapons made their way to staging areas in Turkey near the Syrian border, for use by the Free Syrian Army and other ragtag terrorist groups to fight against Assad. The objective was and still is to destabilize the Assad government.

The plot only thickens, and involves Saudi Arabia, Iran and Russia. Unbelievable.

Four Americans were killed in Benghazi. Forty thousand have been killed so far in Syria. Tens of thousands of Syrian people have become refugees. Why? For what? To advance the agenda of Saudi Arabia. For oil.

Read the whole thing HERE. And tune in for the rest of the interview.
