Bill Maher gets a clue

This month’s Flying Pigs Award goes to (drumroll please…) angry leftist Bill Maher. Yes, amazingly enough, it appears that Maher is finally getting fed up with pulling more than his fair share of the wagon in the Golden Land of High Taxes. Speaking with Rachel Maddow on MSNBC earlier this week, he sounded almost cogent ~

“You know what? Rich people – I’m sure you’d agree with this – actually do pay the freight in this country.” 😯

“I just saw these statistics,” he continued, “I mean, something like 70 percent. And here in California, I just want to say liberals – you could actually lose me. It’s outrageous what we’re paying – over 50 percent. I’m willing to pay my share, but yeah, it’s ridiculous.”

And the fun never ends. Sacremento’s latest outrageous move is to actually tax retroactively: California businesses fuming over retroactive $120M tax grab. From Fox News ~

In December, the state’s tax authority determined that a tax break claimed over the past few years by 2,500 entrepreneurs and stockholders of California-based small businesses is no longer valid and sent out notices of payment.

“How would you feel if you made a decision, which was made four years ago, (and) you absolutely knew was legally correct and four years later a governing body came in and said, ‘no, it’s not correct, now you owe us a bunch more money. And we’re going to charge you interest on money you didn’t even know you owed’,” Brian Overstreet told Fox News from his office north of San Francisco.

Businesses can’t operate in a climate where the rule of law is increasing ignored – anymore than the rest of society can.

Now that Bill Maher gets it, what’s it gonna take for the rest of the productive class in California to wake up?

Founding Wisdom [Flouted by the Foolish]

I anticipate nothing but suffering to the human race while the present systems of paganism, deism, and atheism prevail in the world. New England may escape the storm which impends our globe, but, if she does, it will only be by adhering to the religious principles and moral habits of the first settlers of that country.

Stunner: Hillary Comes Out… in Favor of SSM

Seriously. Is anyone actually surprised that the High Priestess of Progressivism has suddenly decided to declare her support for same sex marriage? Especially when her announcement is perfectly timed to bully the sheeple into “evolving” on the issue themselves, just as the deconstructionists on the Supreme Court get set to overrule DOMA (which the lawless executive branch has refused to enforce anyway – in violation of the constitution btw) and thousands of years of human civilization.

But, lest anyone think she suddenly woke one morning and decided to proclaim to the world that she thought Adam and Steve should be able to marry, marktooley at the Institute on Religion and Democracy provides us with a little historical perspective on the former Secretary of State;

… Hillary by all accounts was deeply shaped by the Methodism of her youth, especially one particular youth pastor and a radical magazine for Methodist youth called MOTIVE, which shut down in the early 1970s after controversially declaring itself for homosexual liberation. Hillary as First Lady recalled having still kept every issue. Liberal Methodism of the 1960s almost certainly helped to shift a once conservative suburban teenage girl who supported Barry Goldwater into a dedicated religious and political liberal.

In my book TAKING BACK THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, I recount personally watching First Lady Hillary Clinton address the 1996 United Methodist General Conference in Denver. She was effusively introduced by United Methodist Bishop Richard Wilke of Arkansas, who had worked with her during her Arkansas days, and would himself shift from an evangelical favorite to an advocate for church affirmation of homosexuality.

All career politicians become highly skilled at spinning and equivocation. But America’s current crop of Leftists have elevated political posturing to an art form – and whole new heights of prevarication.

In the Left’s Church of Moral Relativism established doctrine actually doesn’t allow for a principled position on anything. Like that folk song of the 60’s – in the days of Hillary’s youth – their concept of right and wrong is just “Blowin’ in the Wind.”

Saturday Shorts – 3-9-13

Random links of interest, concern or curiosity from the past week or so, that deserve at least a SHORT mention:

Ex-Embassy Security Officer In Libya: “The Taliban Is On The Inside Of The Building ~ Short video clip of Benghazi survivors testifying before the House Government Oversight Committee back in October. “Fighting against the people who are supposed to be supporting (them)” ?!! Where has this been buried?

Basketball star Dennis Rodman: Kim Jong-un is ‘awesome’ ~ Rodman’s a poster child for the Useless Idiots Club; “his country LOVES him.” 😯 And if his subjects don’t display quite enough of that love? Well… North Korean army minister ‘executed with mortar round.’

After the Rand Paul filibuster, Joel B. Pollak at Breitbart asks, “Will the Left Finally Get the Tea Party Now?” ~

At its core, the Tea Party is about American values, not Republican politics. It exists not to obstruct the Democrats but to restore the Constitution.

Damning Jobs’ Context Ignored by ObamaMedia ~ The truth behind this weeks’ rosy-sounding unemployment numbers. And it’s not getting better any time soon ~
FED SURVEY: Businesses Say They’re Hiring Less And Laying Off Workers Because Of Obamacare. And of course, Welfare And Food Stamps Really Do Discourage Work.

No one has the power to redefine marriage ~ Just a reminder for those of us who still call ourselves Christians.

“A just law is a man-made code that squares with the moral law or the law of God.” ~ Dr. Martin Luther King

“An unjust law is no law at all.” ~ St. Augustine

So what are we to do about it? First of all, don’t be intimidated. Don’t automatically accept that every law passed is a just law. Understand well that our inalienable rights come from our Creator, not our government, and if a law violates any of those rights, it may be legal, but it cannot be just. Stand up for what you know to be true. Stand alone if necessary. In the words of Pope John Paul II, “Be Not Afraid.”

Bikers Transform Run-Down Bar Into New Church Home ~ Encouraging story out of Virginia ~ They call the Bible their “Owner’s Manual for life” and they ride for Christ’s sake on the open road.

It’s NOT your house Barack!

The brand-new White House was first occupied by John Adams, our second president, in 1800. He moved in a couple weeks before his wife Abigail joined him, penning a letter to her the day after he arrived ~

I pray heaven to bestow the best of blessings on this house and all that shall hereafter inhabit it. May none but honest and wise men ever rule under this roof.

It was our third president, Thomas Jefferson, who first opened the White House for tours. Since then, other than during wartime, the home of America’s head of state has remained open to the public – free of charge.

Fast forward two centuries – and the current occupant is playing petty, vindictive games; political opponents must be punished…

Sixth graders at St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Waverly, Iowa, had their upcoming
visit canceled as the White House suspended all tours under across-the-board
government spending cuts in a partisan budget battle. The disappointed class
put a video on Facebook asking for the tour to be reinstated.

How pathetic. What a sorry excuse for a man, let alone a president.

Barack Hussein Obama is a classless poseur. He has no respect for the office of the presidency, none for America and her people, and certainly none for his temporary home at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Barack Loses a Comrade

After learning of the death of Venezuelan thuggish dictator President Hugo Chávez, President Obama offered a few empty platitudes ~

“At this challenging time of President Hugo Chávez’s passing, the United States reaffirms its support for the Venezuelan people and its interest in developing a constructive relationship with the Venezuelan government. As Venezuela begins a new chapter in its history, the United States remains committed to policies that promote democratic principles, the rule of law, and respect for human rights.” [Source: Wall Street Journal]

But then really, what does one say upon the demise of a dictator these days? Mustn’t sound too “judgemental.” On the other hand, you’re not quite ready for the sheeple to realize how much you admired his dubious achievements – and how closely you’re emulating his tyrannical behavior…

In Requiem for a Despot: the Death of Hugo Chávez, John A. Huettner at the American Thinker offers some biographical information and discusses Chávez’s autocratic reign. See if anything sounds familiar ~

During his 14 years in power, Chavez made a career out of trashing capitalism and the United States and fomenting unrest and chaos throughout South America. He polarized Venezuela through divisiveness and fear mongering and ascended to power using a brew of boorishness, thuggery, racism and class envy cloaked in nationalistic and socialist rhetoric…

Always the kleptocrat, Chavez felched his country’s oil resources and declared open season on its wealthy citizens to fund state food programs, “free” housing, health care and education, and other redistribution schemes which did little to reduce poverty despite the squandering hundreds of millions of dollars to buy the votes of his loyal Chavistas in a series of questionable elections…

Throughout his rule, Chavez was apparently able to buy support through welfare programs and giveaways aimed at keeping enough dumbed down, impoverished, dependent voters to assure his reelection. While there is no suggestion yet that Chavez ran death camps or promoted genocide, he had no problem jailing or exiling political opponents, stifling any opposition, and encouraging his followers to intimidate and denounce anybody who disagreed with him.

He continually spewed the usual tired utopian socialist bromides about community, equality, and a leaderless society while personally doing little more than seizing land and other property and gifting it to family members, political allies and supporters. While he claimed to preside over a free and democratic nation, he controlled every aspect of government and micro managed every aspect of society.

Ultimately, little changed in Venezuela during his rule other than the redistribution of wealth to cronies, gutting of the middle class and perhaps the alleviation of some poverty at the very low ends of the spectrum.

Certainly some depressing parallels huh? If our Socialist-in-Chief has his way, we’ll be looking more and more like a banana republic.

As Huettner explains, when the productive class and freedom-loving Venezuelans figured out what Chávez’s endgame was, they got out if they could ~

Predictably, as he began running out of businesses to nationalize and other peoples’ money to prodigalize, professionals fled the country, inflation gutted the economy and the homicide rate rose astronomically to one of the world’s highest.

We better derail our own little despot soon; there’s nowhere else to go.

Rand Paul’s Fillibuster: The (Inspiring!) Opening Statement

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Up-dated 9:00 a.m. 3-7-13
Laura Ingraham summed the day up nicely:
As a gaggle of GOP senators were returning from a cozy dinner with President Obama Wednesday night, the junior senator from Kentucky was in the midst of a marathon filibuster giving CSPAN2 what must have been its best ratings ever. I couldn’t turn it off, and scanning twitter, I saw it was clear that neither could legions of Americans transfixed by something that we hadn’t seen in some time in our nation’s capital–courage and conviction…
Rand Paul didn’t eat for much of the day himself, but with his filibuster he fed an electorate hungry to hear from a politician of principle. For almost 13 hours, Paul put the Constitution in the front seat, and his own convenience and comfort in the way back. Let the record reflect the names of those who stood with him in the early hours of his effort–Senators Mike Lee, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio. In other words, the tea party spirit is alive and well.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sorry – can’t tear myself away from C-SPAN today! 🙂

History-making moment! Senators Rand Paul(R-KY), Ted Cruz(R-TX), Marco Rubio(R-FL) and Mike Lee(R-UT) doing the Founders proud.

Budgeting in the REAL world

This one’s been around a while so the $$’s have changed (most importantly, our national debt has increased from 14 to 16.6 trillion (!) – $166,000 in the example.) But it’s worth another look to remind ourselves how out-of-control the federal government spending really is ~

Founding Wisdom [Flouted by the Foolish]

“As to the abuses I meet with, I number them among my honors. One cannot behave so as to obtain the esteem of the wise and the good without drawing on oneself at the same time the envy and malice of the foolish and wicked, and the latter is testimony of the former. The best men have always had their share of this treatment, and the more of it in proportion to their different and greater degree of merit. A man, therefore, has some reason to be ashamed of himself when he meets with none of it.”

Saturday Shorts – 3-2-13

Random links of interest, concern or curiosity from the past week or so, that deserve at least a SHORT mention:

Hollywood is Dead ~ Sultan Knish’s post-Oscar reflections ~

The death of Hollywood would have been a tragedy once, but these days it’s almost a relief. It leaves behind a lot of great movies, almost all of them made in the past, and the best proof of that is the compulsive flood of remakes, reboots and reinventions of old properties.
The spirit of the industry is gone and all that’s left is a shambling zombie picking over its own brains and living off past glories while throwing elaborate industry parties that are little more than an expensive glorified reality show.

NASA – Subjugated, “Repurposed” and Sleeping With Our Enemies ~ Another tragic casualty of the Obama regime – now the agency is leaking military tech secrets to “friend” and foe.

All the Coal, None of the Carbon- Almost ~ Newly developed technology can capture more than 99 percent of carbon dioxide emissions during production. Looks like the EPA may have to find a new energy villain ~

The OSU discovery exposes the fallacy of radical left and particularly the Obama Administration. They believe people are the problem, when in fact people will invariably find the smart, safe, and efficient solutions to the challenges we face.

All Of This Whining About The Sequester Shows Why America Is Doomed ~

Americans are absolutely addicted to big government. They want a gigantic government that sends out free money to more than 100 million Americans every month, but they absolutely do not want to pay for it. They would rather steal money from their children and their grandchildren to pay for it.

DePaul Punishes Pro-Life Student for Releasing Names of Vandals ~ Another U.S. college campus with a low tolerance for free speech.

Missouri Union-Boss-Turned-Democrat Rep. Wants to Make Fighting For Workplace Freedom A Felony ~ From the department of You Just Can’t Make this Stuff Up; right-to-work legislation is having such a positive economic impact wherever it’s been enacted that some leftists actually want to criminalize its sponsorship.

90 Seconds of Great Character ~ Heartwarming story from El Paso that reminds us all may not be lost.
