When the “content of a man’s character” counted

Today, while the country is honoring the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, I would like to pause as well to honor another black man from an earlier century, also a minister of God: Rev. William Mack Lee.

William acquired his surname from the famous commander of the Confederate army, not through paternity, but through ownership. That’s right, William Mack Lee was, in his own words, the body servant of General Robert E. Lee ~

revmacklee-GenLee

I was born June 12, 1835, Westmoreland County, Va.; 82 years ago. I was raised at Arlington Heights, in the house of General Robert E. Lee, my master. I was cook for Marse Robert, as I called him, during the civil war and his body servant. I was with him at the first battle of Bull Run, second battle of Bull Run, first battle of Manassas, second battle of Manassas and was there at the fire of the last gun for the salute of the surrender on Sunday, April 9, 9 o’clock, A. M., at Appomatox, 1865.

Source: SonoftheSouth.net

Sixteen years after the Civil War ended, Lee was ordained as a Baptist missionary minister. He spent the ensuing decades founding several churches (in Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia) and preaching throughout Virginia and the Carolinas. In 1918 he wrote a small book, the “History of the Life of Rev. Wm. Mack Lee,” partially a fundraiser to complete payment on his most recent church.

revmacklee
The Bedford Bulletin (Bedford, VA) helped promote those efforts ~

Rev. William Mack Lee, one of the best known colored men in the South, is in town this week making an effort to raise funds to complete the payment on his church near Norfolk. He is a Baptist minister and built the church at a cost of $5,500, of which all has been paid except about $500, and he wants to raise this before he returns home.

Here’s an excerpt from Lee’s “History” ~

I have some gavels made out of the poplar where Marse Robert bade farewell to his comrades and instructed them to go home and make themselves good citizens and may I urge those who read this book, especially my people, to take the advice of the humble writer, try to make yourselves good citizens by being industrious, save your money, educate yourselves, buy property, etc., let your religion be more practical and less sentimental. The best friends we have are the Southern people who know all about our raising, and if we colored people want to get along well with the white people, we must show our behavior to, respect and be obedient to them. These are my views to our race.

Recalling Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream, are there any doubts at all about the content of Rev. William Mack Lee’s character?

I have been preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ the best I knew, with my limited preparation, for 57 years. My master, at his death, left me $360 to educate myself with. I went to school. I studied hard at the letter, but my greatest learning came from Jesus Christ. God sent me out to preach, and when God sends a man out, he is qualified both with the Holy Ghost and the Spirit. He makes his words sharp as a two-edged sword, and his feet as a burning pillar of brass.

And, as for Robert E. Lee and his character ~

“I was raised by one of the greatest men in the world. There was never one born of a woman greater than Gen. Robert E. Lee, according to my judgment. All of his servants were set free ten years before the war, but all remained on the plantation until after the surrender.”
~ Rev. William Mack Lee ~

“Hello California – God here…”

Between Hollywood’s ever-deepening degeneracy, the state’s pandering to the lawless (illegal aliens) – instead of representing law-abiding tax-payers, same-sex marriage, and now gender-swapping bathrooms, I was wondering whether the recent California drought and wildfires might be a wake-up call from God…
Ya think?

crossonAzusa

From CBN News:

Wildfires in Southern California near Azusa Pacific University have claimed at least 1,700 acres and destroyed at least two homes.

But amid the flames, one iconic structure is still standing.

A 10- to 12-foot cross on top of a mountain peak in the Azusa mountains is visible for miles. The cross was originally erected in 2007, and many local residents often hike up to the lookout spot where it stands overlooking the San Fernando Valley.

This week, flames ripped through the area and the cross appeared to be lost, according to early local reports. But the wood structure, which has become a fixture on Azusa Peak, survived unscathed.

Detroit? Even the dead are leaving

Here’s the trailer for a brand-new documentary from Ben Howe about the demise of the Motor City ~

As mentioned midway through this clip, the sad reality is; bodies actually are being moved from Detroit cemeteries to suburban ones, following relatives who left the city years ago.

Bankrupt takes a look at the causes behind the mass exodus and downfall ~

With a booming manufacturing sector and cultural magnetism, the city had bright horizons after World War II. But as the 1960′s rolled in, the marriage of Big Business and Big Government overtook Detroit. The central planners in government needed the powerful corporations, and the powerful corporations came to depend on the bureaucracy, too. The marriage worked well for the politicians and for their corporate cronies, but Detroit itself entered a decades-long decline. America watched as Detroit slowly bled people, jobs and revenue. Politicians tried spending money. They tried raising taxes. The more they taxed and spent, the faster the city declined.

Random links of interest, concern or curiosity from the past week or so, that deserve at least a SHORT mention:

Ex-NFL Great Dryer: GOP Establishment Afraid MSM Will Call Them Bigots ~ How refreshing; a rare voice for truth from Hollywood ~

Penis pumps draining Medicare of millions ~ Ever since the the perfectly natural winding-down of the male body’s sexual clock was given the misnomer “erectile dysfunction,” not only have we been subjected to a proliferation of nauseating Viagra commercials, but Big Pharma and medical device manufacturers have discovered a whole new market: aging baby boomers who think geriatric sex is somehow guaranteed under the constitution. And guess who gets to pay?

“Considering the strain retiring baby boomers will soon be placing on Medicare’s budget, shouldn’t we be focusing this entitlement program on real, life-saving treatment and equipment to serve the health needs of seniors – instead of subsidizing penis pump purchases?” Benjamin Domenech of the Heartland Institute think tank said in an email statement.

~ UPDATE on the Brynn Williams Case from Advocates for Faith & Freedom ~
In all honesty, it’s hard to tell whether or not all the furor was justified in this case. The school district is still holding hearings in the matter ~

“… we have always held that this is not about the principal or the teacher. Our claim is and always has been that the principal and teacher were enforcing practices and policies of the District as they were required to do.”
~ Advocates for Faith and Freedom

It was just one small skirmish in the annual War on Christmas, but it was a big deal to one little girl ~
First-grader told to stop talking about Bible [Todd Starnes/Fox News] ~

The parents of a 6-year-old girl said their daughter was humiliated when a teacher interrupted the child’s one-minute speech and told her to sit down because she’s “not allowed to talk about the Bible in school,” attorneys for the California family allege.

brynns-starYoung Brynn’s class assignment was to find an item at home that represented her family’s Christmas traditions and share it with the class. The next day, her presentation was abruptly cut short ~

“Our Christmas tradition is to put a star on top of our tree,” the little girl said. “The star is named the Star of Bethlehem. The three kings followed the star to find baby Jesus, the Savior of the world.”

Before (Brynn) could utter another word, the teacher intervened, according to Robert Tyler, the general counsel for Advocates for Faith & Freedom – the law firm representing the Williams family.

“Brynn’s teacher said, ‘Stop right there! Go take your seat,’” Tyler said. “Brynn was not allowed to finish her presentation by reciting the Bible verse, John 3:16.”

This happened in California which – considering this is the Magical Land of Fruits & Nuts we’re talking about – isn’t all that surprising. HOWEVER — there is one religion that California public school students are actually required to talk about as part of the curriculum – the preferred faith of Muslim terrorists: Islam.

In fact for the last ten years or so, the Religion of Peace has been actively pushed by educators in that state. This is from World Net Daily in 2003 ~

Requiring seventh-grade students to pretend they’re Muslims, wear Islamic garb, memorize verses from the Quran, pray to Allah and even to play “jihad games” in California public schools has been legally upheld by a federal judge, who has dismissed a highly publicized lawsuit brought by several Christian students and their parents.

[But a first-grader talking about the Star of Bethlehem is illegal?!]

Since the above excerpt was published, the propaganda has spread eastward. Here’s an excellent, well-documented and linked re-cap of the religious indoctrination now going on throughout the entire country (as well as in the UK and Canada) from BareNakedIslam: Have your schools been indoctrinated with whitewashed Islamic propaganda yet? This article is from May 2012, but we can only assume things have gotten worse since then.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Little Brynn wasn’t allowed to recite John 3:16 in her first grade class, but I can still quote it here. So I will ~
For God so loved the world that He gave His only
begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him
should not perish, but have everlasting life.
~ John 3:16 ~
O’Ministration: Amnesty for everyone but homeschoolers
Remember when America was a beacon of freedom and liberty? When the country stood up to bullies – instead of behaving like one?
Remember when we were a shining city on the hill, the hope and dream for millions living under oppression?
“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…”
Yeah well, snap out of your nostalgia. Those days are long gone.
In 21st century America if you happen to be a family from Germany, in this country simply because you want to homeschool your children, sorry – no freedom for you!
romeikeFamily2
Last spring, I blogged about the Romeikes, a German family granted asylum in the U.S. after coming here in 2010. They left their native country rather than have their children taken from them for the “crime” of homeschooling.
Taking a dispassionate approach that’s strangely inconsistent with their generous amnesty proposals for millions of illegals, and without giving any real explanation, the magnanimous Obama administration revoked the Romeikes’ asylum in 2012.
Since then, the family’s fate has been in the hands of the federal court system. And now, as Kevin D. Williamson reports at National Review Online ~
The family has appealed to the Supreme Court, which has ordered the Obama administration to respond to the Romeikes’ petition, but the administration has so far refused to do so. 😯
[Hey – when you’re above the law…]
Could their reluctance to respond have anything to do with the Progressive goal of Transforming America’s Schools into Authoritarian Instruments of Compliance?
As John W. Whitehead , author of “A Government of Wolves: the Emerging American Police State” says in this October 2013 article, we’re already well on our way to totalitarian rule, certainly when it comes to the public school system ~
We are now living in an era in which childhood as it was once understood, a time to learn, to make mistakes, to try and fail, to try again and succeed, has been replaced by the worst elements of corporate and government culture. Children are treated as workers and prisoners, collected, corralled and controlled by teachers who increasingly act as bureaucrats, forced to fit every child into the exact same mold, regardless of their personal abilities and talents. This mindset is apparent among the proponents of the Common Core Testing Standards which threaten to unleash a new system of standardized testing on a new generation of kids […]
hitler-youth
Government officials have worked hard to indoctrinate Americans into the belief that everything you do is suspect, and anything you do can be held against you at a later date. This mindset is clear in all aspects of society, from zero tolerance policies in our nation’s schools, to SWAT team raids in our neighborhoods, from the NSA’s surveillance of all Americans’ communications, to the corporate-state’s insistence that people aren’t capable of managing their own affairs. More and more people are becoming suspicious of others, quick to judge, and more than willing to follow the government’s dictates, however irrational and immoral they may be.
Back at NRO, Williamson would agree ~
Homeschooling terrifies the Left because the Left is at its core totalitarian, seeking to bring political discipline to every aspect of life — and control of education is essential to that project. The public school is in miniature what the Left believes the world should look like: Everybody arranged in orderly rows and moving about on an orderly schedule punctuated by bells, being taught about diversity and climate change by nice union ladies who also lead them to their federally subsidized lunches. If you can say “no” to that, you can say no to any part of the Left’s vision. Homeschooling is an existential threat to the privileged position of the institutional Left. The schools are the factory in which it manufactures its future clients.
statue-liberty-weepingDuring World War II we were fighting fascism in Europe. Who would have imagined that seventy years later we’d be battling against the same kind of tyranny in Washington D.C.?
Sorry homeschoolers, if you’re yearning to breathe free these days, you’ll have to look elsewhere.
BUT President Obama’s illegal alien, drunk-driving deportation evader uncle, Onyango Omar, is here to stay.
