Last night (9-28-15), Ted Cruz offered an amendment in the Senate that would have stopped both the funding of Planned Parenthood as well as President Obama’s unconstitutional Iran treaty. The Republican leadership of the Senate wouldn’t even bring his amendment up for a vote, too afraid of being blamed for another “government shutdown.”

Europe: Importing an Islamic pathology
“Importing a pathology.”
It’s a phrase I recall from a book on foster-parenting. The authors recommended that couples with biological children hold off on fostering until their kids had flown the nest. Adding foster children to the family mix, with all the attendant emotional baggage, might just be inviting more interpersonal turmoil than they were prepared to cope with.
Even families with the “healthiest” of relationships may struggle. That’s because, the authors cautioned, by adding an unknown, troubled element to the existing family unit, you are essentially importing a pathology.
Almost without exception foster children will have been traumatized by their experiences. The unique challenges they present may completely upset existing parent-child relationships. At best, there will be disruptions. At worst, biological family members may be at risk for emotional and/or psychological damage of their own.
Watching the current Muslim “refugee” invasion of Europe it seems to me that “importing a pathology” is a perfect description of what’s taking place.
Boatload after boatload of defiant young Muslim men do not appear to be fleeing to safety, seeking asylum. Rather they’re brazenly headed for the countries with the most generous welfare handouts. The baggage they’re dragging along includes a seriously twisted worldview, a dangerous ideology which is decidedly “unhealthy” for the European continent.

The most recent figures come after a 66-year-old Japanese tourist died after taking a tumble down a flight of stairs at the Taj Mahal while attempting to snap a selfie. There was no word on whether his picture was uploaded posthumously. As the Mashable article points out, for perspective, this figure of 12 selfie-related deaths is higher than the number of fatalities from shark-related run-ins, which stands at eight.
Like the Japanese tourist, the leading cause of death-by-selfie comes in the form of falling. Helpfully, there is an entire Wikipedia page devoted to selfie-related injuries and deaths.

Catch the “Super Moon” display Sunday
This Sunday night, September 27th, marks the last – and most impressive – of the recent series of four “blood moon” occurrences. If you’re in the eastern half of the U.S., and blessed with a cloud-free sky it should be a great show. And it’s even appearing during prime time so we shouldn’t have to lose any sleep (Peak eclipse will be at 10:47 pm ET on Sunday). 🙂

• Russia (a country many eschatologists consider a crucial “end-times” player)has suddenly entered the Syrian conflict
• Sunday, Sept. 27 @ 8 p.m. — Pope Francis (more Marxist than Christian in my humble opinion) departs for Rome… The moon will start darkening at 8:11 pm Eastern time.

Misguided papal priorities
So Pope Francis arrived in the U.S. on Tuesday after spending four days in Cuba. The Washington Post recapped his visit to the island paradise ~
(D)espite a warming of relations with the Vatican and the United States, the Communist dictatorship continues to suppress free speech, political dissent and other human rights. Yet by the end of his third day, the pope had said or done absolutely nothing that might discomfit his official hosts.
Pope Francis met with 89-year-old Fidel Castro, who holds no office in Cuba, but not with any members of the dissident community — in or outside of prison. According to the Web site 14ymedio.com, two opposition activists were invited to greet the pope at Havana’s cathedral Sunday but were arrested on the way. Dozens of other dissidents were detained when they attempted to attend an open air Mass. They needn’t have bothered: The pope said nothing in his homily about their cause, or even political freedom more generally. Those hunting for a message had to settle for a cryptic declaration that “service is never ideological.”
The “opposition activists” were members of the Ladies in White, wives and relatives of imprisoned political dissents. It’s been reported that these women have actually been banned from attending Catholic mass in Cuba (see my July 20th post). So as the Post intimates, I’m not sure the pope was particularly concerned about their detention this week.
“The Holy Father visits Cuba as a missionary of mercy, but he has not spoken about human rights … without respect for human rights, nothing the Pope urged for in his homily can be achieved,” Berta Soler, the leader of the Ladies in White group, said following her release.

Father Alberto Cutié, a Cuban-American, former Catholic priest, now an Episcopal priest had some words of reproval for the pope. He expressed his disappointment with the Francis’ seeming indifference to the victims of Castro’s persecution in a letter which was published in the Spanish language El Nuevo Herald. Cutié had three specific questions for the pontiff ~
▪ Why do you and other religious leaders so strongly condemn capitalism, and we are even offered a list of all the disasters that arise as a result of it in official church documents and speeches, but we never see an equally strong condemnation of atheistic communism and the ideologies that stem from it, which continue to do so much damage in our world? That inequality in condemning seems unfair and unjust.
▪ If we really want to help the poor, why ignore those suffering the great poverty of lack of freedom and, just because they somehow express their despair, claiming that their most basic human rights be respected, they are detained, harassed and beaten by the Castro regime? Every day young Cubans arriving on our shores -and countless others never get here alive- looking for that freedom.
▪ Is it more important to have diplomatic relations with a country that has not had free elections in over 50 years, that mistreats its people, and has a very well-documented track record of ongoing oppression and even robing church properties, than to seek justice, the common good and the longed for freedom of all Cubans?

Thus far, Obama’s move to normalize relations with the Cuban communists is working out splendidly- NOT ~
U.S. exports to Cuba, controlled by Havana, have declined this year, while arrests of opponents have increased, along with refugees. Many Cubans are trying to reach the United States ahead of what they fear will be a move by the Obama administration to placate the regime with a tightening of asylum rules.
The pope’s visit won’t change a thing either. If he and the president were truly concerned about the welfare of the Cuban people they would denounce the Castro regime and the country’s bankrupt communist system.

Raúl Castro added to the legacy of left-wing despots giving Pope Francis questionable presents on Tuesday, offering him a large crucifix in which Jesus can be seen hanging from oars, which many interpret as either an homage to or mockery of the thousands of balseros, or rafters, who have risked and lost their lives to flee Castro and start a new life in the United States. Under Fidel Castro, it was not uncommon for the Cuban coast guard to attack the makeshift vessels Cubans used to flee; in the most prominent such case, the Cuban government intentionally drowned 37 men, women, and children attempting to flee to America.

Torture has been institutionalized; myriad human-rights organizations have documented the regime’s use of electric shock, dark coffin-sized isolation cells, and beatings to punish “anti-socialist elements.”

Muslim president? Obama’s been practicing “taqiyya” since the day he took office
Dr. Ben Carson has been vilified by the Left for having the temerity to suggest that a Muslim president might be inconsistent with American values. The mainstream media, for once pretending fealty to the Constitution, are aghast. That document clearly says there’s no religious test they indignantly assert.
Spin, distract, prevaricate. Pretend that Carson misunderstood the literal words of the Constitution, when he plainly meant that the tenets of Islam are wholly incompatible with our founding principles. (Especially Islamists’ nefarious practice of Taqiyya*)
Proving Carson’s point, we already have a Muslim sympathizer in the White House, and look how well that’s turned out ~

If the latest revelations about the Afghani perverts and U.S. military leadership’s seeming indifference to their victimization of young boys doesn’t inflame your sense of moral outrage, I’m pretty sure nothing will ~ U.S. Soldiers Told to Ignore Sexual Abuse of Boys by Afghan Allies.
Why even the liberal New York Times temporarily suspended their progressive agenda to report on this horror ~
Rampant sexual abuse of children has long been a problem in Afghanistan, particularly among armed commanders who dominate much of the rural landscape and can bully the population. The practice is called bacha bazi, literally “boy play,” and American soldiers and Marines have been instructed not to intervene — in some cases, not even when their Afghan allies have abused boys on military bases, according to interviews and court records.
These atrocities are finally being exposed in the wake of the Army’s prosecution of Sgt. First Class Charles Martland. Unbelievably, Martland’s former Special Forces captain, Dan Quinn, was relieved of his Special Forces command after a fight with a U.S.-backed militia leader who had a boy as a sex slave chained to his bed. ~ Four years later, the Army is also trying to forcibly retire Martland.
The background story ~
In September 2011, an Afghan woman, visibly bruised, showed up at an American base with her son, who was limping. One of the Afghan police commanders in the area, Abdul Rahman, had abducted the boy and forced him to become a sex slave, chained to his bed, the woman explained. When she sought her son’s return, she herself was beaten. Her son had eventually been released, but she was afraid it would happen again, she told the Americans on the base.
She explained that because “her son was such a good-looking kid, he was a status symbol” coveted by local commanders, recalled Mr. Quinn, who did not speak to the woman directly but was told about her visit when he returned to the base from a mission later that day.
So Captain Quinn summoned Abdul Rahman and confronted him about what he had done. The police commander acknowledged that it was true, but brushed it off. When the American officer began to lecture about “how you are held to a higher standard if you are working with U.S. forces, and people expect more of you,” the commander began to laugh.
“I picked him up and threw him onto the ground,” Mr. Quinn said. Sergeant Martland joined in, he said. “I did this to make sure the message was understood that if he went back to the boy, that it was not going to be tolerated,” Mr. Quinn recalled.
There is disagreement over the extent of the commander’s injuries. Mr. Quinn said they were not serious, which was corroborated by an Afghan official who saw the commander afterward.
And these two American officers, who refuse to ignore this evil, are the bad guys?!
As Lieutenant Colonel Nicholson (played by Alec Guinness) exclaimed in “Bridge Over the River Kwai,” this is “madness.”
When asked about American military policy, the spokesman for the American command in Afghanistan, Col. Brian Tribus, wrote in an email: “Generally, allegations of child sexual abuse by Afghan military or police personnel would be a matter of domestic Afghan criminal law.” He added that “there would be no express requirement that U.S. military personnel in Afghanistan report it.” An exception, he said, is when rape is being used as a weapon of war […}
The American policy of nonintervention is intended to maintain good relations with the Afghan police and militia units the United States has trained to fight the Taliban. It also reflects a reluctance to impose cultural values in a country where pederasty is rife, particularly among powerful men, for whom being surrounded by young teenagers can be a mark of social status.
See, it’s just their “culture.” Their sick, twisted culture.
Who’s more evil? The evil bastards who do this? Or the evil bastards who prevent good people from stopping it?!
As Dan Quinn told the Times ~
“The reason we were here is because we heard the terrible things the Taliban were doing to people, how they were taking away human rights. But we were putting people into power who would do things that were worse than the Taliban did — that was something village elders voiced to me.”
Have our feckless leaders fallen so far down the moral relativity rabbit hole that they’ve actually lost the ability to discern right from wrong? Do they realize that their cowardice in the face of evil undermines our entire mission? Why go to war at all if there is no right or wrong?

I love the story Mark Steyn recounts in his book “America Alone” about General Sir Charles Napier in 19th century India when the British were faced with the practice of “suttee,” the tradition of burning widows on the funeral pyres of their husbands. ~
(The general) was impeccably multicultural: “You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom; when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours.
In the 19th century common sense, personal integrity and courage in the face of evil were still highly esteemed traits. Were General Napier alive today and attempted to assert his authority over a barbaric practice like “suttee” – to righteously insist on the superiority of his “custom” – he would promptly be relieved of duty for cultural insensitivity.
The general had what Steyn called cultural confidence – in spades. America’s military leaders are suffering from a total lack of it. To our national shame.

In the last edition of Saturday Shorts I mentioned the latest episode of eminent domain tyranny in Connecticut. Emboldened by the extra-constitutional Supreme Court ruling on Kelo v. City of New London, greedy bureaucrats in every level of government are increasingly viewing property as “private” only so far as it’s not needed for the “public good.” Watch out. Your local tyrants may just decide the “community” needs a shopping center more than you need your cozy bungalow.
