10,000 “evil” jobs to vanish – right in front of OWS

As the OWS (Occupy Wall Street) mob hovers around Wall Street, and U.S. unemployment hovers around 9%, a new report by the NY state comptroller predicts that Wall Street may lose up to 10,000 securities jobs by 2012. From Heritage’s Foundry:

The news is the latest in a long line of dark clouds to gather over the U.S. economy. Unfortunately, the policies the Obama Administration is pursuing are making businesses less likely to succeed, not more likely to increase hiring.

As the Wall Street Journal so aptly explains:

To reduce unemployment, America needs more entrepreneurs like Steve Jobs, who started Apple in his garage. Today Apple employs 49,000 workers. The government cannot centrally plan such entrepreneurial innovation. It can, however, encourage it.

Perhaps the disgruntled Wall Street protestors could actually pick up and peruse a copy of the WSJ while they’re lounging around – they might get a clue.

A Victory for the Dark Side

Pity the poor Afghans…

There has been a Christian presence in Afghanistan since the first century. According to Eusebius’ record, the apostles Thomas and Bartholomew were assigned to Parthia, which included north western Afghanistan, and India.

[Source: Forward in Christ Magazine]

But it doesn’t appear that there will be one much longer ~
According to the U.S. State Department, there’s not a single Christian church left in Afghanistan. The last public one was razed in March 2010.

No wonder the country is #3 on Open Doors World Watch List of persecuted Christians. In Afghanistan, “conversion from Islam is considered apostasy and is punishable by death under some interpretations of Islamic rule in the country.”

Just a few weeks ago, the head of the Afghan High Peace Council was blown up by an exploding turban. And tragically, last summer a team of 10 eye medics was killed in a remote area of the country; 8 Christian aid workers and their 2 Afghan helpers. ~ Motive for Aid Worker Killings in Afghanistan Still Uncertain.
Motive? They weren’t Muslim. That’s all the motive the “Religion of Peace” needs.

For those responsible for these deaths, killing Christians is a higher priority than the welfare of their own people. The team were members of the International Assistance Mission (IAM). Since 1966, that organization has provided eye care and medical help to more than 5 million Afghans. An IAM spokesman said at the time of the murders: “Our faith motivates and inspires us – but we do not proselytize. We abide by the laws of Afghanistan.”

The deaths of the medical team followed on the heels of a call by an Afghan parliamentary secretary (in June 2010) for the public execution of Christian converts. As an International Christian Concern (ICC) regional manager said at the time:

“It is absolutely appalling that the execution of Christians would be promoted on the floor of the Afghan parliament. Khawasi’s statement sounded a whole lot like the tyrannical manifesto of the Taliban, not that of a U.S. ally. American lives are being lost fighting terrorism and defending freedom in Afghanistan – yet Christians are being oppressed within Afghan borders. This comes after billions of U.S. dollars have been invested in the war effort, and millions more have been given in aid. The U.S. government must intervene to protect the religious freedoms and human rights of all Afghans.”

They say they are… well, according to the State Department report, released last month, the United States continues to promote religious freedom in Afghanistan. And a mighty fine job they’re doing. In a country that no longer has even one Christian church, apparently all they’ve been promoting is the freedom of Muslims to practice Islam.

More than 1,700 of our military personnel have died in Afghanistan since the U.S. first went into that country 10 years ago. A large percentage of them were undoubtedly Christian.
Our military commanders, particularly our Commander-in-Chief, are longer inclined or determined to prosecute this war. It’s past time to stop sacrificing our young men and women for what now appears to be a lost cause. Without godly leaders, we can’t win against this foe.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
But we can still pray:
Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in thy goodness hast caused the light of the Gospel to shine in our land; Extend thy mercy, we beseech thee, to the nations of the world that still walk in darkness. Enlighten the Moslems (and the leaders of our republic) with the knowledge of thy truth; and grant that the Gospel of salvation may be known in all lands, that the heart of the peoples may be turned unto thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
~ The Book of Common Prayer ~
OWS Images Speak Volumes
While the goals of the “Occupation” remain ambiguous – other than the childlike demand for “fairness”- some facts are crystal clear. The pictures say it all:
They’re “revolting”. And long for the 60’s halcyon hippie days.
(Oh look! It’s Bob Dylan!)
A couple would rather make love than “Revolution”.
Some of the San Franciscans are original hippies,
and still promoting the “Coffee Party”.
They’re not very environmentally friendly.
They’re selfish –
don’t really give a d**n who they inconvenience.
They’re not exactly destitute – no shortage of gadgets.
They’re not adverse to flashing a little bling.
(Kanye West, pretending to be one of the 99%.)
In San Francisco, where protesting is a way of life,
going au naturel is always an option.
They like to celebrate Halloween all month long.
They’re messy.
Really messy.
And hypocrites.
Hank William Jr’s Shout-out to ESPN & Fox News
During Oct. 3rd’s Fox & Friends, Hank Williams, Jr. temporarily forgot about the severe free speech limitations imposed by political correctness. He committed the “crime” of analogizing the Obama-Boehner “Golf Summit” by comparing it to “Hitler playing golf with (Israeli leader) Benjamin Netanyahu.” Clearly a serious infraction of the unwritten rules. As ESPN’s speech police promptly reminded him by dropping William’s “Are you ready for some football?” lead-in to their Monday Night Football broadcast.
Here’s Hank’s no-holds-barred response to the wimpy intolerance of both ESPN and Fox News:
Brave New Drones
I really don’t mean to scare anyone on a beautiful October Sunday, but this video is truly disturbing. It’s from this past Friday evening, at an “Occupy Atlanta” event in a downtown park. As an avid Mark Levin listener, the first terms that popped into my head while watching it were his nicknames for irredeemable, hardcore Lefties; “Drones” and “Mind-numbed Robots” ~
This simple-minded regimentation reminds me of the way one deals with a large group of young children. Because they have no self-control, they must be collectively controlled. Hence, the group-speak; Kinder-care for Alinskyites.
As the video begins, Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), a civil rights activist, is standing off to one side waiting to speak. Atlanta’s 11Alive station reported prior to the event:
(The protesters) have also drawn praise from experienced organizers including union leaders and long-time activists. U.S. Rep. John Lewis, the Georgia Democrat, said in a statement Friday “their activism is inspiring.”
But you can see by the look on Rep. Lewis’ face during the surreal “introduction” that he wasn’t so much inspired as unsettled. Was he suddenly having a Dr. Frankenstein moment? Maybe. Especially when they “consensused” him off the stage!
The video’s creators summarized the moment nicely:
Many curious citizens and media outlets came to the first Occupy Atlanta event, and were visible(sic) shocked and confused by the consistent Marxism employed by the group. People abandoned their individuality and liberty to be absorbed into a hypnotizing collective. The facilitator made it clear that he was not a “leader” and that everyone was completely equal; words often spoken by leftists, but in this case they actually applied their philosophy. Into this surreal and oppressive environment, Rep. John Lewis, a civil rights hero and icon of American leftism, came to speak as has so often done at left-wing rallies and events in Atlanta. He is practically worshiped in Democrat circles, and was visibly stunned to see these Marxists turn him away. It was reminiscent of previous Marxist revolutions in history when those who ignorantly supported the revolutionaries are, over time, purged and rejected for the “good of the collective”, when their usefulness has expired.
Near the end of the video the leader shouts: “Democracy won!” 😯
No. Zombie Mobacracy won.
Let’s hope enough people see this, wake up to the Truth, and run as fast as they can from the “Occupy Animal Farm” movement.
Saturday Shorts 10-8-11
Random links of interest, concern or curiosity from the past week or so, that deserve at least a SHORT mention:
Hard-line Muslims in Egypt Attack Coptic Church, Homes ~ Arab “Autumn” not going so well for Christians in Egypt; “Imams in more than 20 mosques called for crowds to gather and destroy the church and demolish the houses of the Copts and loot their properties.”
Treasury Direct at Pay.gov ~ Forward this link to Warren Buffet, and other wealthy Lefties you know, who feel guilty over not paying enough in taxes. On this webpage they can donate as much as they’d like “to help reduce the public debt.”
Living amid Hollywood hypocrisy ~ Janine Turner (remember “Northern Exposure”?) in the Washington Examiner: “(Hollywood liberals) are the ultimate connoisseurs who insist on living liberty at large. Yet somehow, (they) gag at the very thought of capitalism going on elsewhere.”
Obama’s Holiday Greeting: Does He Now Claim He’s Jewish ~ Michael Medved on Obama’s oh-so-sincere Rosh Hashanah message. Couldn’t quite whip up the same enthusiasm he had for The “Holy Days of Ramadan”; Barack Hussein Obama had no message for Easter 2011 but has one for Ramadan
“Chrislam” – Straight from the Pits of Hell ~ New “religion” for the seriously misguided.
Loving their enemies ~ “A Christian ministry working with Israeli doctors treats nearby Muslim children and adults one heart at a time.” A better, Biblical way, to interact with the Muslim community.
Jonathan Miles, Shevet Achim coordinator, sums the larger purpose behind the organization this way: “Maybe the ultimate good news behind our work is this: The New Testament is the only possible peace treaty between Jews and non-Jews. I believe the conflict in the Middle East is spiritual at its core. Accepting Jewish sovereignty over a single grain of sand is unthinkable to religious Muslims, since it contradicts the claim—which some Christians also like to make—that God has rejected His chosen people in favor of another. So you have two or three peoples in a death struggle over who is really chosen. Only the New Testament has the spiritual solution—affirming God’s choice of Israel, but then gloriously revealing how the death and resurrection of the Messiah has torn down the wall which once divided Jews from non-Jews.
Amen.
“Occupied” With Visions of Utopia
It’s all over the news now; Wall Street, and other urban locations, are presently being “occupied” by a bunch of sadly misguided and delusional protesters. Originally billed as “Day(s) of Rage”, the movement’s organizers must have decided that that moniker was a bit too angry-sounding and might turn off potential converts to the cause.
Somehow these malcontents believe that by taking down the wealth creators they can build a new society on the ruins. Or something.
The fact that their concept of a perfectible world is totally incompatible with the reality of human nature, as history as proven time and again, somehow escapes them. They’re searching for the impossible, as Thomas Sowell explains in his book “The Quest of Cosmic Justice.” Cosmic Justice is the idea that somehow it’s within our grasp to eliminate all inequalities, and make life fair for everyone. Sounds like such a wonderful, noble goal – except, as Milton Friedman explained:
A society that puts equality – in the sense of outcome – ahead of freedom will end up with neither equality nor freedom. The use of force to achieve equality will destroy freedom, and the force, introduced for good purposes, will end up in the hands of people who use it to promote the own interests.
Think Stalin, Mao or Pol Pot.
Sowell tells us;
We need to consider what those who believe in the vision of cosmic justice seldom want to consider – the nature of (the attendant costs) and how they change the very nature of justice itself.
Unfortunately, the “Occupiers” themselves aren’t considering much, beyond the euphoric mood of righteous protest – and maybe where their next meal is coming from.
Michelle Malkin has a great post that reflects on the passing of Steve Jobs, and compares his accomplishments with the non-productive Cosmic Kooks’ vision of utopia: From “I, Pencil” to iPhone: The spontaneous order of capitalism. She points out the contrast between Jobs’ enormous success in the free market – a direct result of his invaluable innovations in technology – and the slackers’ camp-out on Wall Street. There they are – totally connected; Facebooking, tweeting, posting and videoing like crazy, and dreaming of destroying capitalism, the very system that fostered the Apple empire. And totally missing the irony.
…it’s the doers and producers and wealth creators like Jobs who change the world. They are the gifted 1 percent whom the #OWS “99 percent-ers” mob seeks to demonize, marginalize, and tax out of existence.
Inherent in the American success story of the iPhone/iMac/iPad is a powerful lesson about the fundamentals of capitalism.
The “I, Pencil” tale, that Malkin discusses in her article, is an essay written by Leonard Read, back in 1958. Milton Freidman regularly used it to illustrate the limitless potential for widespread prosperity created by free market capitalism.
Consider the lowly pencil:
The Wall Street Wackos obviously never heard the “I, Pencil” story.
My answer to the “Occupiers’” misguided protests? Set up a bunch of Jumbotrons and play Milton Freidman videos in an endless loop, 24/7.
“Most economic fallacies derive – from the tendency to assume that there is a fixed pie, that one party can gain only at the expense of another.” ~ Milton Friedman ~
Fun Facts about Michigan’s Flim-Flam Film Subsidies
Last year, as part of an effort to grow the economy, Michigan taxpayers shelled out $115 million in tax breaks and refunds to movie production companies. Was it worth it?
Let’s take a look at a few pertinent facts and figures:
➡ Enacted in April 2008, State House Bill 5841, granted unlimited tax breaks/subsidies of up to 42 percent of money spent in Michigan on movie production. [Source link]
➡ A majority of the states have created similar plans as a means to lure business and reduce unemployment. However, each film industry job created in 2009 cost Michigan about $193,000. [Source link]
➡ The film credits are not “incentives,” as they’ve been misnamed. They’re direct subsidies. Under the 2008 legislation, filmmakers have been reimbursed by the state for 41 cents of every $1 they spent here. [Source link]
For example, if George Clooney shoots a movie in a Michigan town and spends $1,000 on catering in a local restaurant, Michigan taxpayers pay $420 of his bill. [Source link] Aren’t we generous?
➡ According to the Michigan Film Office press release, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” received $6.1 million in refundable tax credits from the state. That translates to $1.36 per Michigan resident. [Source link]
➡ “Real Steel”, the film adaptation of “Rock’em Sock’em Robots”, hits theaters this Friday. It’s expected that the movie will claim an $18.3 million refundable tax credit. With 4.4 million people filing an individual income tax return in Michigan, this amounts to $4.26 per taxpayer. [source link]
Feel free to request a discount at the ticket window.
➡ Gov. Rick Snyder attempted to slow the gravy train this past June. The $47 billion spending plan, in the 2011-2012 state budget that he signed, includes a $25 million cap; a one-time allowance for film subsidies in Michigan. This was meant to replace the previous subsidy program, which was laying out over $100 million annually. [Source link]
➡ After the budget was passed with the cap in place, Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville, R-Monroe, decided further legislation was needed – in case the $25 million wasn’t enough. 🙄 He subsequently drafted Senate Bill #569, which is now slowly working its way through the state congress. [Source link]
➡ Further shenanigans may be in the works – by GOP(!) legislators. [Source link]
➡ More than three months after the budget was finalized, the film subsidy details are still up in the air… [Source link]
MichiganFilmOffice.org has a list of Michigan-made films from the last several years: Made In Michigan. And those currently in production: Coming Soon. Recognize many of them? Probably not. Looks like quite a few are just direct-to-video.
➡ Many films got more money from Michigan taxpayers than they earned in theaters, as “Michigan Capitol Confidential” reported in “Box Office Bombs”:
A review of the movies awarded $1 million or more in tax subsidies listed in the 2009 Michigan Film Office annual report found that six of those seven movies received more in subsidies than they made up at the box office in U.S. theaters.
“At least when it is left to the market, you are not forced to subsidize a film you would otherwise avoid at all cost,” said Michael LaFaive, director of the Mackinac Center’s Morey Fiscal Policy Initiative and a long-time critic of the film incentive program.
Nolan Ryan summed things up in the Detroit News back in February:
I supported the Michigan film credits, because I felt the program offered the chance to build an industry that would keep our young, creative citizens at home.
But I also understand why Gov. Rick Snyder can’t sustain them. How can he justify spending $160 million on a Hollywood giveaway while asking senior citizens, middle class families and public workers to sacrifice? Michigan can’t afford this sort of high-risk investment.
~~~~~~~~~
Enjoyable as it must be to be on the receiving end of taxpayer largesse, our government – be it federal or state – simply has no business picking winners and losers in a free market system. Especially given their dismal track record (federal and state). All this “playing favorites” simply encourages more unethical lobbying and cronyism. And, in the end, hampers the struggling economy even more.

That’s a wrap! 😎

Fighting Union Thuggery with the Facts

I happened to hear about Union Facts, a new website, on a radio talk show the other day, and decided to check it out – glad I did. Looks like a valuable resource for union members who are tired of being strong-armed by their “undemocratic leaders.

The site is operated by the Center for Union Facts, a non-profit organization supported by foundations, businesses, union members, and the general public. They’re primarily about education, not necessarily politics.
And they’re not anti-union. They’re anti-union-officials’-abuse-of-power.

Union Facts features information about employee rights, union profiles, current issues and pending legislation. Included is a large data base of more than 130 National Unions, with facts about membership, dues, salaries of officials, lobbying and criminal 😯 charges & convictions.
Want to find out what your particular union is up to? Where are your dues going? How much union leaders are making? Who’s been charged with corruption, embezzlement, racketeering?
Union Facts has the answers.

There’s also a related blog: LaborPains.Org ~ “Because being in a union can be painful”.
Some great information for union workers who are fed up with misspent dues, and their leaders’ abuse of power. Arm yourself with the FACTS.

~~~~~
Sen. Orin Hatch(R-UT), introducing his proposed legislation, the Employee Rights Act, to Congress:
“…truthfully, I’m not interested in stopping unions from organizing or preventing collective bargaining. I simply want to protect the rights of individual workers and ensure that, if they do opt for union representation, that choice is freely made and fairly determined.
For too long, American workers have been treated by union leaders as little more than human ATMs. They claim to be progressives, supportive of equality and democracy and the working man. This bill is consistent with those principles, providing working men and women with a real and meaningful voice in decisions regarding unionization.”
